Japanese rpg relies more on linear storyline with most turn based style.
And the characters have big bubbly eyes.
Yep, that's exactly how I felt.

I did play X-Men Legends, but I guess I never classified it as an RPG since I have always been used to the turn based style of combat.

Thanks guys for your input. I think I will give it a try as I am now intrigued. At a few hours a week it should only take me 6 months to finish...
With KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, those kind of games, it's nowhere near Diablo 2 or X-Men Legends... that's a differnet type of RPG entirely.

With KOTOR, you pause the action, issue out your commands, and then watch them execute them in real time.

So with KOTOR do you pause it multiple times during a conflict? So it's quicker than trun based I assume? Turn based always takes too long for me.

If you want to, you can. It's been awhile since I played it, but I'm pretty sure you can queue up 5 commands to take place and just let it go.

But if you say attack, you just do it once, don't need to do it 1000 times, they'll keep attacking when they are dead. So you could go attack ---> power shot ---> something else ---> back to attack.

And then, if you need to refine, pause it again and put in some more commands. It's much faster than turn based.

You don't have to pause KOTOR to issue commands. In fact I prefer not to, makes it more fun that way.

Btw, KOTOR is my favorite RPG of all time, and my #2 favorite game of all time. This coming from a hard core JRPGer. The game is amazing. Play it now.

Got Persona 3, just started it and I'm gonna play through a good amount tonight(hopefully)... haven't played through an RPG in awhile(Dragon Quest VIII), so I hope this one is good... :)

I've been looking forward to it though... if anyone has any questions on the game please fire away... I'll try to answer and post my impressions soon.

I, I don't understand
MM will officially be a both/emo during the extent of playing this. it's a good thing as long as its shin mugemi.
Shame on you.

Did you get a Japanese or some kinda Beta copy MM? And please post your impressions. I'm curious to see how a non-fanboy freak feels about it.

I just started playing Suikoden Tactics a few days ago. I'm surprised I didn't play this one sooner (considering I'm a Suikoden freak.) I never thought I liked strategy games but I'm getting into this one. I like it so much I'm thinking of getting Fire Emblem for GC, I always hear great things about that game.

MM is hooked up.

So i'm playing DDS right now. I don't see why people think this game is harder than nocturne...maybe I just need to get to enemies that use Death and Expel spells X_X

the only difference I see is that they get the pre-emptive strike a lot.

also, anyone have any recommendations for which mantras to get early? seems like it doesn't really matter...

Woah woah, that P3 is an import right?

Yes Iron Stomach is invaluable if you want to farm for AP, it nulls Stomach Ache. Also I got alot of use out of aliment inflicting skills like Tentrafoo (not sure if I spelled that right.) It helps when the ailment connects and you can wack away with criticals. And if I remember correctly not too many enimes are resistant to it.

But besides that it's hard to recomend a single skill since the enimies weekness are always changing. Some of the most powerful Mantras can't be unlocked until you're pretty much at the end. Just make sure you have a well balanced group.

Im currently close to beating Suikoden Tactics and I beat Fire Emblem for GC a few months ago, and can honestly say that Fire Emblem is superior to Suikoden Tactics. Definitely pick up Fire Emblem as soon as you can.

Finally getting Rogue Galaxy, should be arriving this week I hope. I really should get back to FFXII before cracking it open, but I don't think I'll hold out.

DS has been taking up the majority of my gaming time lately.

I don't even think I've turned my DS on in the last 2 months... hopefully Hoshigmi Remix changes that.

I just put in Summon Night 2 into the micro... decent so far, but the story takes a long time to get going.

Same here, and I don't plan to turn it on until the next Phoenix Wright comes out. Been playing the hell out of my PSP though.

Regarding Persona 3 (post from PS2 thread)

Okay after about an hour of play, I'm happy to say I'm enjoying it... again I really like the art direction/look and feel of this game... The English voice acting is better than I thought it would be and the cut scenes are really well done...

Suikoden Tactics has shown me I can enjoy the ocasional strategy game. I'll be picking up Fire Emblem soon. Question about Suikoden Tactics: Are their several endings or only one? I'm asking cause one of my characters died and I didn't save for a long time.

Nope, just one ending. I hope you got your suikoden iv save, the extra character you get is amazingly strong. By the way, did anyone get the Konami Allstar news? Their website is shutdown. Now all those one million point items are now redeemable by contest.

Right now, I'm playing between 4 games- Yoshi Island Ds, dawn of mana, final fantasy vi, and aelis eclipse generation of chaos. Dawn of mana camera angle is really pissing me off. Camera is constantly swinging in all directions, majority of my time is spent reseting the camera angle.

Yes, I got my save and loaded it. I painfully played through IV so I could enjoy Tactics. The secret character is the hero from IV, right?

Yes, you get
Lazlo, hero of suikdoen iv and snowe
. It's not hard to figure out who the extra character are. Once you load your save, you get an extra stage and get use both character temporary when the game just started

so glad I picked up DDS1 the other day.

great game so far. so great that I do not comprehend. can't wait to see the story unfold.

Ohhhh, so that stage at the start was extra? Cool :)
Just got FF7 & Rhapsody in the mail yesterday.

Before then I havent been much of an RPGer.. I'm hooked :)
FF7 I can understand... it's pretty critcally acclaimed, even if it also receives a large amount of criticism. Something I don't really wanna get into...

But Rhapsody is such an odd game to be hooked on... hahah =P

Picked up Monster Hunter Freedom the other day for psp since it is so hard to find and been wanting to play it since I bought my psp. 10 hours in and great game. I haven't even really done anything either aside from the 1* elder quests and mining ore for new weapons.

Dawn of Mana sounds like it uses the 3d Sonic camera system.

I dont think the camera is a real problem for Dawn of Mana. I only some minor problems aiming flying enemies and just center the camera. It isnt much worst then most 3D games.

Chrono Trigger is as good as I remember it. Been playing it on my PSP off and on. Anyone have any tips for ironing out the slowdown in battles, or any experience with SNES emulators on PSP?

I tried ripping the PSOne disc to play, but the awful loading times/general blurriness of the graphics made me choose the SNES version. I would have thought having it on the memory stick would help with loading, but it didn't at all.

(I do still own my original chrono trigger cart bought at retail back when, just so you know)
Does everyone here unanimously agree that Shadow Hearts games are good?

Everytime I try to start 1 or 2 I get bored...
I tried to play 1 but couldnt get past the graphics. I skipped right to Convenant and blasted through that and New World. Both great games, and they tell you enough backstory in Covenant that you don't really need to play 1 to see what's going on. Give it more of a shot. Once you get past the fact that certain battles can take a loooong time, its extremely enjoyable.

that helped me a lot!

and I said it a number of times already, but Shadow Heart Covenant = my favorite PS2 game!!!!

Is Monster Hunter on the PS2 as good as the PSP version? what are the differences?
Is Monster Hunter on the PS2 as good as the PSP version? what are the differences?
I never played the PSP version, but I have over 200 hours on the PS2 one. The main difference would be online play. I don't know if people still play it online, but they were only a few months ago. I loved it, and it's a lot of fun online.

Yeah, when I started one I was surprised by the graphics. I fought through it somehow though and it has turned out to be an enjoyable game. Another game I suddenly stopped playing and I don't know why :p

Well.. I never played both games, but judging by first impression(when I was testing these games during the gamestop buy 2 get 1 free sale) they both seem great. Even for psp standards. The graphics is almost up to par with ps2 version and loading time is pretty good.

I'm not sure is this correct? According to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Freedom

Changes

The game is different in quite a few ways from Monster Hunter, and Monster Hunter Freedom has some changes from Monster Hunter Portable.

Changes From Monster Hunter

Since this game is based on Monster Hunter G, a game never released outside of Japan, the game contains a much larger set of weapons and armor and more things to do:

* New weapon creation/improvement paths
* More splits in paths to mix with other, previously unrelated paths
* New sharpness levels: Blue and White, White is the new strongest sharpness level
* More armor sets
* Armor skill enhancements are modified for many existing pieces
* More armor skills and Felyne Whim skills
* New Wyverns (Yian Garuga) and color variations of the old ones
* Instead of having to go to the inn to get food, you can now hire different cats to works as chefs to make a wide variety of food.
* New items
* G-class quests are about the same if not weaker than + quest in MH
* The addition of the Kokoto Farm allows hunters to harvest herbs, catch bugs, fish and even mine ores that can be used to make armor. Usage of the farm can upgrade it after hunters accomplish a number of quests from the Village chief.
* Guild cards, which allow more in-depth information of friends to be viewed at anytime, as well as your own ( though this information is only updated when two or more people finish a quest together, and have already given their guild cards to their recipient ). This information includes about the owner: equipment, number of quests finished and rank of those quests, chosen title, personal phrase, friendship level, awards, the size of previously defeated monsters, and treasure hunt scores.

Ha, started Summon Night 2 yesterday afternoon, at the end of the game tonight

It was fun enough for me to plow through in a day... I've got a bit of free time so I managed to blow through all 14 or so hours of the main story in a day. On to the bonus dungeons!

OK never played any game in the Mana series and I don't know what I have been missing. Do I play Children of Mana(DS) or Secret of Mana(SNES) first? How long is each?

Secret of Mana is one of the greatest RPGs ever. Honestly I can't recommend any other titles from the series since none of them lived up to the original (or 2nd of the series if you want to get technical.) You could beat it in about 30 - 40 hours. I think it takes me less since I've beat the game about 4 times. And it's 3-Players!!!

Woot, finished everything in Summon Night 2 including the bonus dungeons in under 2 days - counter had 17 hours on it. Guess I really plowed through that game.

Not going to start another RPG now, gonna wait for Final Fantasy for the PSP to play through it again for the 1,000th time! Still just as good as the first time, though ;)

Man i need to get through some of these games. i was doing good on FFXII and III then New games came out. I am about 48 hours into FFXII i really need to finish it and then play through my 35+ PS2 RPG backlog, i want to play them but i hate playing RPG's unless i have a good 2-4 hours to play a session and that just doesn't happen much anymore.

I also started Atelier Iris 1 when i was just testing it since i bought it used and i put around 10 hours into it because i liked it, so i guess its what ill finish next.

After that im thinking Ar Tonelico, or getting into SMT: DDS 1 & 2 then Nocturne.

Grievances with .hack//GU Part 1 and why it's worse than the last .hack series:
1. Super-repetitive battle system, even worse than before. Has even less depth than last game. You don't even get items from enemies anymore.

2. Only like 5 different enemies (with more powerful versions with different names/colors that do the same thing except have more power and HP)

3. The character designs are boring and uninteresting. None of them have any real personality and don't really interest me. No one is near the caliber of characters like Kite, BlackRose, Mistral, Balmung, Terajima Ryoko, Helba, etc from the first series.

4. The story sucks and isn't explained well, yet the cutscenes are ridiculously long and drawn out when they don't even explain anything. I find myself reading magazines instead of paying real attention during the cutscenes.

5. The Grunties were redesigned to look "cuter," yet they just come off as ugly and poorly designed.

6. The graphics are terrible for an end-PS2 title and perhaps even look worse than the previous series. They just look plain washed-out. Obviously, the cutscenes look good, but that doesn't mean anything.

7. Money doesn't mean shit in this game. I haven't even bought anything, and the shops have way inferior items. You can get anything you need in the dungeons or by trading.

8. I love how you can sell extra crap in the guild shop, but like I just said, you don't really need money in this game anyway. I have 200k GP just lying around because of this.
