I guess IGN has a review of Grimoire already, and it's glowing for the most part, except for one major thing. Sadly, it's a sticking point that will stop me from getting it--no saving mid-battle. For a game with potentially 90 minute matches, there's no way to get out of it without starting over. Sad, because the 2D RTS concept is otherwise interesting to me. I guess I'll stick with Odin Sphere.

After spending the whole weekend at home while my daughter was sick, I also spent time with Persona 3 while she was asleep...

After about 20 hours or so logged in I definately reccommend it based on what I've played SO FAR...! ... Support ATLUS and get this game when it comes out next month!
So which is better, the high school dating sim part, or the other part? ;)

Summon Night 2 has turned out much better than the rough start led me to believe it would. No clue how far along I am, but about 8 hours in. Unfortunately there's a real lack of teleport spots in this one compared to the original (I think, anyway), so it lends itself to lots of backtracking and replaying if you screw up.

Started Rogue Galaxy a few hours ago, seems like a fun game. I have died like 6Xs already though, might be tough. I beat the first boss so far and have not got into much so it might even get better.
FF1 on GBA was so dumbed down in difficulty it's not even worth playing. You don't have to level up at all, and even then it's still way easy.

Hoshigami is shit, and they didn't change it for the DS version.

Like I said in the OTT, I finished .hack//GU 1. I still think it's pretty shitty, and now I just don't think I'm going to waste any time or money on 2 and 3. I think one of the reasons why I thought it sucked so much, other than it obviously sucking on its own, is that I played Rogue Galaxy right before it. RG is like the fresh Maine lobster of story-driven action-RPGs, fresh and delicious, while .hack//GU is like the expired canned tuna of the genre, stale and rotten.
Hoshigami isn't even out yet, so how do you know it's shit? I love how people are just comparing it right off the bat to the PS1 version - the only reviews I saw on Gamerankings are two reviews, one by Hardcore Gamer (I don't agree with their taste at all), and RPG Gamer, and I don't really agree with their reviews either. I'm willing to give it a chance and support a small publisher, worst comes to worst I lose $5 selling it on Ebay if I don't like it. But it seems to still be hard as hell so that's definitely 500 pluses for me.

I'm pretty content to just buy it myself and see how I like it, rather than read people's opinions whose taste are nowhere near mine. I only read reviews these days just to get an overview of a game, but I don't really care for the reviewer's opinion on a game unless it's some huge glaring error. Not being able to save mid battle in Grim Grimoire is one of the things that is like "whoa!", but I don't think it'll stop me from getting it, it just means I'll play it at night when I've got more time.

And gunm, I saw you said in another thread you weren't a fan of tough as nails games, at which point based on what people have said I would never recommend Etrian as it's supposed to be extremely hard.

Ha, Rei, another 360 bites the dust I see ;) I might be getting Grim Grimoire too depending on what I have left to trade in - I figure if I get close to $40 in credit I might as well just go for it. Did you play Etrian yet?

Normally I'd be angry about the 360, but the couple weeks it'll take for me to get it back will give me time to play some of my backlog. So I won't complain too much.

I've been playing Etrian, and it is fun. Though I don't think it's as hard as people make it out to be. My guess is that most of the people playing it are used to current RPGs that are easy as hell. As long as you make sure to plan ahead, and save often, you'll do fine. The only part that I'd say makes it tough is money. You'll probably have to spend some time farming for cash in the game.

I'm the same exact way with reviews. I couldn't care less about the score. I just read them for info on things like glitches or bad game design. Doesn't matter to me what some random guy on the internet thinks about a game. I'm a big boy, I can make my own decisions. I love Koei games, and I think Ar Tonelico was one of the best games this year. Obviously I can't go by other people's opinions XD

People who played the Japanese version said that almost nothing was changed and that it's still crappy.

I'm thinking I'll give Ar Tonelico a shot one of these days... how is it difficulty wise? I realized that's the thing that made stop playing RPG's altogether is that they are piss ass easy with stories that have been told 100's of times over. I don't mind a weak story if the gameplay is there (and challenging), but usually I can't get either. Farming for cash and the fact you can't just walk all over the game has me super excited to go pick up Etrian on Wednesday - Botticus tells me Yggdra Union is pretty tough as well.

I used to put stock in reviews but after reading some horrible reviews for games I liked, and some glowing reviews for games I thought were merely a little above average (Super Robot Taisen comes to mind), I just skim reviews - these days I don't really bother to check reviews, unless a game starts scoring 2 out of 10 for some reason.

I found people who read a review, notice it's flaws, and will go into a game actively looking for those flaws - how many people would have made a big deal about the slowdown in Odin Sphere if it wasn't such a focal point in the reviews? I probably would have never noticed the black wars on the side of the widescreen RE 4 Wii if I didn't already know to look for them.

Point is, especially with RPG's, reviewers are super critical of anything that's not a main stream big name game - I'm actually surprised Odin Sphere scored as high as it did. Shit, looking at Gamerankings, Etrian didn't do too hot on the reviews but the way it's been previewed and talked about means I'll like it, so as you said, who cares what one guy out of millions thought about the game?

Hey, I thought Godhand was an awesome game, and IGN gave it a 3/10, so yea, I can't go by reviews either ;) Since I don't backlog shit anymore, and it's easy to tell if a game sucks within the first 5 hours of playing it, if it's horrible I can usually have it up on Ebay that day or the next day, and I'll lose at most $5 - $10, which is the cost of a rental without actually doing the work of renting it.

Are you getting Hoshigami Remix, by chance? I'm actually kind of excited because one of the main complaints is that "it's too hard!!" which is awesome, at least for me. I don't know why Botticus if finding Summon Night 2 so hard... I finished everything in 17 hours and only died once due to carelessness, the second game was tons easier than the first.

I'm really sad that Square has decided to dumb down Final Fantasy over the years. I'll still buy it, because it's my first and favorite RPG, but damn Square, put back in the hard mode plz :(

Yeah, I knew Etrian was "hardcore", but if it's harder than virgins at the AVN awards, then I'll have to pass on that one, too. Thanks for the heads up.

Ar Tonelico is wicked easy. What I loved about it were the characters, which is my main reason for playing RPGs. The characters and the story are what make me like the genre.

I haven't really looked into Hoshigami since I didn't like the PS1 version. If I ever find it used, or a good deal on it, I may pick it up.

i asked this in the "what are you playing.." thread, but I thought i'd post it here too.

Just wondering how far I am in DDS1-- I just fought
Jinana, the Maribel leader's demon form after infiltrating the yellow guy's base.

I felt the same way about the game the only con I would have to say is being inside the tower those area's should of had some variety to them and it made the game boring at times..

If your finsished with that you should go snag up Atelier Iris 3.. Game im having fun with right now is Shining Force EXA...

I posted this in the FFXII thread, but:

I'm like 2 hours in to Final Fantasy XII and it feels so overwhelming already. I haven't played a Final Fantasy since VIII and I'm so out of touch. Played the demo for this and thought, "Wow, it's just like Knights of the Old Republic."

Heh...I was so wrong.

picked up DDS2 today. looked at the back of the box and of course, the marquee is a huge spoiler  :bomb: I got home and put it right in the collector's box without opening or looking at it :)

I hate when companies do that.

Bought Season 5 of The Shield, looked at the back of the box while I was waiting to check out, and it was a huge fucking spoiler too (I'm only halfway through Season 2).

I've decided we need to hold someone accountable for Banpresto not releasing the rest of the Summon Night series over here. After loving the two GBA incarnations, I need more. Hopefully the new DS iteration, Twin Age, will get released in due time, but there's quite a back catalog that we're missing.

If nothing else, I wouldn't mind seeing Summon Night 3 and 4, and EX-Thesis on PS2, and Swordcraft Story 3 on GBA.

Finally got back to playing FFXII last night after several months of other games.

Got through the Stilshrine of Miriam but got bored after running around the dungeon hacking stuff, so tonight I fired up Rogue Galaxy which finally came in the mail today. Nice light-hearted change from the dark mood of FF. I'm only an hour or two in, but I think I'll stick with it and switch off when I get tired of it.

Also got Bully in the mail today after FINALLY finding it for $15, but it's going to wait.

Bought 5 games today, it's a vertiable RPG lovefest -

Yggdra Union
Grim Grimoire (which was the last copy at TWO different Gamestop's I went to, so it's selling fast it seems)
Etrian Odyysey (last one at the store I got it from too)
Final Fantasy PSP
Hoshigami Remix

Yay!

I have to leave most of my games behind when I move so these should keep me busy for a few months until I can get the rest of my stuff shipped up :D

At some point, I know I will need to start FFXII, but I haven't even broken the shrink wrap on it yet. I should stop buying RPGs until I finish the ones I got. :p

I finished Megaman Legends 2, but I'm sure that doesn't count. I got that along with FFIX at gamecrazy a couple months ago.

In FFIX, I forgot to deliver the Mognet stuff for the the majority of the first disk. Would anybody happen to know if I'm screwed, or if I can go back and deliver the letters later in the game?

After 78 hours I've finally finished Suikoden 5. This game ranks up there in the top ten RPGs I've ever played. Great story, great main characters, even the combat system was pretty fun for a turn based RPG. I can only hope Suikoden 6 is as good (if it even gets made).

Now I can go back and finish Kingdom Hearts 2. I got to Atlantis and quit out of boredom. Maybe boredom is a bad word for it. Pointless seems like a better description. Everything I did in Kingdom Hearts was pointless because here I am revisiting the same worlds again. Once the novelty of Disney and Square together wears off this game doesn't feel like it has anything else going for it. Maybe it'll pick up later on.

Glad you liked Suikoden V, It's by far my favorite PS2 RPG, and it ranks up in my top 5. Did you get the good ending?

The Atlantis level in KH2, is that the one where you sing and dance? I felt like I was 8 years old playing that crap.

Although I missed some letters around disc 2, and now I'm boned on disc 3.

I just hope Suikoden VI will take place after III, because I don't really want another prequel...unless it's about the Flame Champion. Though I did enjoy V.

Agreed, even though V was awsome I want a true sequel. I'd like to see some of the old cast like Flik, Victor, Clive, or Erin come back.

I also thought till the end of V, that the hero would
get the Sun Rune since all heroes in previous games had a true rune

I got both versions of the best ending and I watched the bad ending on Youtube. There's suppose to be another ending if you get between 61 - 107 stars but I haven't been able to find a video anywhere. I kinda wish the best ending had gone on longer but it was still satisfactory.

I just remembered one of my favorite events from earlier in the game. Spoilers about Ferid.
After Georg tells you both your parents are dead, I kept wondering what kind of badass was able to kill Ferid. I doubted that limp wristed, aristocratic Gizel could have done it. It turns out the Sun Rune killed him and it was all the Queen's fault. The revelation of what happened was probably my favorite scene in the game.
I don't care when the next one takes place. It just better take place in Harmonia.
I heard they wanted to end the series in Harmonia, but honestly I hope the series never ends. In the Suikogaiden games parts take place in Harmonia and Caleria in Suikoden III is a border village of Harmonia, but that's about the extent of what's been shown of Harmonia. It does sound like a intrestingplace to end the series.

But if I had to guess the next location I'd say Kanakan. From what I understand it's very warm and well known for liquer.

I want it to end in Harmonia as well, but also don't want this series to end for a while. I mean, there's still 9 True Runes left so they could stretch it if they wanted to.

Also, I must know the truth behind Viki and Jeane.
Also, I must know the truth behind Viki and Jeane.
I also remember Konami confiming Jeane does not have a True Rune. Yuber and Pesmerga is another unexplained history I'd love to know. I always imagine all the heroes from previous games would join forces to take down Harmonia.
The official word on "Jeane" is that they're all members of the same family.
It is offical? I know it was speculated that they all might be diffrent people. None of the games never explained her history or why she never ages, and it's not like them to spoil something important like that for no reason. Out of curiosity where did you get this info from?

This is a paragraph taken from Wikipedia:

"When the creators of Suikoden were interviewed, they mentioned that, "All of Jeane's family look alike," though this appears to have been said in a humorous light. Nonetheless, some believe that Jeane has family members all over the world with her exact appearance and personality traits (giggling frequently, answering questions evasively, and knowing a great deal about runes). Other players believe that Jeane is the same person in all the Suikodens. Many recurring characters, including Viki, Nash, and Futch, seem to believe she is the same person. Nash notes that she "never seems to change." In Suikoden V, Genoh perceives her to be of great age, but is confused by her youthful appearance."

Anyone else playing GrimGrimoire? I got through the first 5 days and it is pretty good so far. The control is better than I expected for a game pad and the music fits the game setting really well.

Sounds like Konami doesn't even know what Jeane is yet. I have a feeling she's gonna start getting more involved in the main story as the series progresses. I remember her little side quest in Suikoden V where she retrived somthing important in the Sindar ruins.

Also I want to know why Edge has the Star Dragon Sword in Suikoden III. He seemed like a intresting character to develop on. And Mike also from Suikoden III seems to have some other identity, like Konami was setting up his character for something more important down the line.

Wikipedia again lol:

"Edge is a 19 year old mercenary for hire found in Le Buque village. In the past, Edge's home village was attacked by vampires and his older sister was taken away. Shortly after that, Viktor and Flik arrived as they were investigating rumors they had heard of the vampires attacking the village. Edge asked if he could tag along as he wanted to become a great swordsman himself. Viktor agreed and lent him the Star Dragon Sword. Together they defeated the vampires and Edge personally killed the Head vampire, saving his sister. Upon hearing of the Harmonian Army invading Dunan, Viktor agreed to let Edge borrow the Star Dragon Sword for a bit longer and they both left.

Aside from the legendary Star Dragon Sword, Edge bears a Lightning Rune."

I never knew this guy had the Star Dragon Sword!!!! How was it it battle in III?
He's got Viktors stance and fighting style. And just like Viktor the Star Dragon Sword has a distatse for his new owner. Maybe they wanted to make Edge a combo of both Flik and Viktor, since he's actually not bad with Magic, but at the same time has very good STR. As far as I remember the sword doesn't talk much, but when it does it's to put Edge down.
I still need to finish I & II someday. I also need better spelling/grammer at night.
The grammer you can do without, but make beating Suikoden 1 & 2 your top priority. It's much more important. ;)

True. In the 5 years of this epic quest to beat I & II, I'm 1hr 30min into the first game and as for the second, I have to wait till I finish the first.

Suikoden III was my introduction into the series, and so I've completed III, IV, V so far.

Edit: I guess I'll play Tactics one day too.

Suikoden II was addicting for some reason. I enjoyed the battle system, though it was as simple as could be for an RPG. I believe I was just interested in collecting all the stars/characters and the whole castle aspect. Unfortunately haven't played the rest, though I heard Suiko Tactics is ok. I'd go out on a limb and say that Suikoden is a good alternative to the FF series.

I played in order: I, III, IV, II, V. Nothing has lived up to III IMO (which I ironically would've liked much less if I hadn't played I first,) and it bothers me that they have ignored good mysteries like Cindar/Syndar/Sindar and Harmonia since III. I probably won't buy another game in the series until they get to Harmonia.
