I wanna see that. Gotta remember to look at BB this weekend.

Kung fu Hustle! :D

I'm going to mention Akira Kurosawa. He's the director of many famous Japanese films such as Ran, Throne of Blood, Seven Samurai, and more.

I personally dont like his movies to much, but he deserves to be mentioned.

nobody knows is an awesome film considering it's based on a true story. it's a bit long, and it needed a few more music cues, but it is good.

i second audition if you really want to be freaked out. i can still hear that chick go kiri-kiri-kiri-kiri- as she does what she did to that one guy.

battlefield stadium is also a cool movie directed by ryuhei kitamura

honorable mentions go out to:
happiness of the katakuris (musical horror romantic comedy)
and shinobi ( think romeo and juliet meets ninjas)
My Sassy Girl

Watch this with your gf. She will melt.
Agreed. I think it's the only asian movie my girlfriend has ever enjoyed watching with me. And it's one of my favorite movies as well.

yeah, My Sassy Girl is definitely one of the best "chick flicks" out there. still, even guys can enjoy it.

Welcome to Dongmakgol - Based on a musical (?). It takes place during the Korean War. A group of North and South Korean soldiers find a village that knows nothing about the war.

My Little Bride - If you liked My Sassy Girl, you'll like this.

Musa: The Warrior - It's a war movie that follows a group of Korean soldiers guarding diplomats in ancient China. It's kinda long but I really enjoyed this movie.

2 Young- It has Jackie Chan's son in it and deals with teenage pregnancy. Surprisingly, it was really well done and I enjoyed it a lot.

3-Iron- It's a remake of a French (?) movie, I think. It's about a guy who breaks into houses but instead of stealing stuff, he fixes things up, spends the night, and leaves the house in better condition then he found it. It's a really quiet movie and there's probably no more than 500 lines spoken.

Infernal Affairs- Old movie, but it's really good. Think double-agents trying to outsmart each other.

I saw the New Police Story last time I was in Cali. Definately the best in the series.

If you liked Snatch, check out Survive Style 5+. It's also got Vinnie Jones in it playing type as a hitman sent to assassinate in Japan.

I love foreign films, especially asian.... but I cannot understand why people like takashi miike or whatever the heck his name is. I've seen 3 of his movies (ichi the killer, and two other ones I cant remember the names of). its just mindless crappy CGI gore with a crappy nonsense ending. People have told me I was too ignorant to understand ichi the killer.... the thing is, the plot is entirely too simple, with just pointless happenings and characters you never really even like.

check out happiness of the katakuris. it's directed by miike, and I think it's funny as hell. miike should do more comedy. I was cracking up at episode 16 of ultraman max (which he directed). he's a bit overrated, but definately a good director.

Got that dvd, one of the best damn movies ive seen in a long while. There is another movie like that coming out soon called First Contact also starring Asano.

Save the Green Planet is a great Korean flick. Really bizarre. Also, if you want another pseudo-sappy romantic comedy like My Sassy Girl, check out Please Teach Me English. There's a really funny Street Fighter scene.

EDIT:

I also forgot. If you like drama with a dash of comedy and ping pong, check out the appropriately named Ping Pong.
Is Survive Style 5+ released officially in the US?
I don't know... then again, I rented it on Greencine - a Netflix clone.

In the Mood for Love and 2046 were good, Infernal Affairs is a personal favorite too, Last Life in the Universe, Zatoichi, and Jiang Hu. Then there's some more obvious bigger ones like Hero, Warriors of heaven and Earth, etc.

Infernal Affairs is a trilogy. First movie is the best though. New Police Story is very good. SPL is a great movie. If you wanna watch SPL, watch the Uncut version. My Sassy Girl is great i heard. watch all the director's movies. I think it was The Classic, My Sassy Girl, and Windstruck.

TAE GUK GI. I can't believe no one has mentioned this one. It's a movie about 2 brothers and the Korean War. A really good film.
I saw the New Police Story last time I was in Cali. Definately the best in the series.
I'll take the first two Police Story movies over NPS any day.
My Sassy Girl is great i heard. watch all the director's movies. I think it was The Classic, My Sassy Girl, and Windstruck.
The Classic is pretty good. But parts of the movie were really corny. The first half of Windstruck was hilarious, and then it went into a totally different direction in the second half. But it was still a good movie based on the fact that im completely infatuated with Ji-hyun Jun. And I've been hearing rumors about an American remake of My Sassy Girl for years now, but I hope it doesn't happen.

I haven't seen too many war movies, but I liked this one a lot. I thought some parts of the story were kind of absurd, but it was still a great movie.
Tony Jaas Tom Yum Goong , that I'm looking forward to seeing.
One of the best action movies I've seen in years. If it wasn't for Fearless, I might even say the best. Ong Bak is good as well, but I thought Tom Yum Goong was better. Is Tony Jaa doing any new movies soon?

Tae Guk Gi
The Coast Guard (Jang Dong Kun...dude from Tae Guk Gi and The Promise is also in this one) - It's kind of a slow movie but the concept is great and is way better the second time around
Infernal Affairs
Vampire Effect
Spring, Winter, Fall, Summer, and Spring
Nobody Knows
Anything by Akira Kurosawa

These are okay; kinda fun to watch if you have nothing better to do
Nowhere to Hide - Kind of fun to watch if you don't pay too much to watch it
So Close - So it's kinda cheesy but it's an okay watch...has Vicki Zhao Wei from Shaolin Soccer in it
Gen-X Cops - There are two versions of this: the one with Nicholas Tse is the good one

This is all I can think of off the top of my head. Now, if anyone wanted any good Asian series (drama or fighting), I'm way more knowledgeable in those ;)

Do you mean the sequel: Gen-Y Cops? That's the one where they kept Stephen Fung, and Sam Lee, but replaced Nicholas Tse with Edison Chen. As for Nicholas Tse, I liked Time and Tide a lot.

a few of my picks (some of them have already been mentioned, so take those as 'second'ing that choice)

chunking express
infernal affairs
time and tide
ikiru (or anything else by kurosawa)
audition
gen x cops (can't believe someone else has heard of this one)
battle royale
riki-oh
2046
hero
last life in the universe
6ixtynin9
bangkok dangerous
the eye

plenty more i can't think of at the moment, but that's a start. i love asian cinema (it's my goal to one day work there...chris doyle is my hero)

i also recommend anything with tony leung or shot by christopher doyle.
Anyone seen Fearless with Jet Li?
Has to be one of the best wuxia movies in ages.
I saw it but I didn't like it. The fight scenes were cool but the story line was lame. The thing that drove me nuts was the ending. It was pretty much idential to Hero (the good of the country comes before yourself).

It was actually based on a true story. Expect the real guy died taking poisoned medicine during a fever but yea some parts were really lame like the whole farming village thing.

Oh whoops..err...I think I confused myself. It's the one where everyone's not saying all these slang words in English and trying to be cool.

I liked Gen-X Cops alot. And the cameo by Jackie Chan was funny too. Gen-Y Cops on the other hand had a few funny moments, but also featured them fighting a digital robot.

a few more...

iron monkey
the twilight samurai
samurai fiction
once upon a time in china
city on fire (one of the main inspirations for reservoir dogs)

chingu - a story about 4 childhood friends growing up in korea (2 of which are gangsters)

iron monkey - donnie yen has a lot of fantastic kung fu scenes in this movie

god of gamblers or any old movie with chow yun fat or stephen chow!

Some of my favorites are: 2009: Lost Memories, Shiri, Tell Me Something, and the Guinea Pig series (ok, so they get really hokey near the end of the series), and a few others I forget. Rented Junk a few weeks back and thought it was a little over rated. I've yet to see The Audition. Though two I really would like to see is The Men Behind the Sun and Evil Dead Trap (my video store only has 2, and I'd rather see the first one first)
Audition. The only movie I've ever seen that is geniunely creepy.
Oi, isn't that the movie with the acupuncture needles and the wire-saw thingy? -shudder-
It was actually based on a true story. Expect the real guy died taking poisoned medicine during a fever but yea some parts were really lame like the whole farming village thing.
At least he died taking poisoned medicine during a fever instead of continuing a fight to the death just to maintain honor. Didn't realize it was really based on a true story. I thought it was one of those cases like the "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre where they want you to think it is true just to make the audience believe in the story.

Has anyone ever seen the movie Vistor Q? My friends wouldn't stop telling me how great it was, so I eventually ended up watching it. And to this day I'm still not sure if they were serious about what they thought of the movie, or if they were just saying that stuff just to get me to watch it. It's directed by none other than Takashi Miike, and from beginning to end it's the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I don't really want to go into detail about everything that was disturbing about it, because it's the kind of stuff that will be etched into your memory whether you like it or not. After I watched it, I read some reviews about it, and surprisingly they were all positive. The movie supposedly depicted some of the issues present in the Japanese society. But I'll always remember it as one extremely screwed up movie.
Tsui Hark's Seven Swords review:

http://www.monkeypeaches.com/050804A.html
Good review of the movie. I liked the movie enough to buy the collector's edition set. The replica swords are pretty cool. Although I would really like to see the original four hour director's cut.

Maybe they'll put some of the scenes that were cut into Seven Swords 2.

ima nut for the classics:
God Of Gamblers 1,2,3
Young and Dangerous 1.2.3.4.5
The Conman 1(this one is best because andy lau is real slick in this movie)
Future Cops(I thought this one was funny because of the use of SF characters in it)
Full Throttle
God of Cookery
King of Beggers
Escape from Hong Kong island

basically anything from Andy Lau , Ekin Cheng, or Stephen Chow or Jordan Chan would sucker me in to watch it.

Takashi Miike is not that great of a director, his movies are fun, but mostly for shock value.

Visitor Q, on the other hand, is absolutely retarded...
