Assassin's Creed Brotherhood...any point to the faction missions?

Wolfpup

CAGiversary!
So once again I like the game in general, but am getting sick and tired of the endless filler.

I'm especially tired of these faction missions, like the courtesan missions, thief missions, etc.

Is there any point to them? Any story you miss, or cool items, if you don't do them? 'cause if not, I'm quitting these.

Heck, the Leonardo missions didn't give me anything I needed, though at least they were fairly interesting original content.

Have to say while I like the EXTREMELY MGS5-like "send your assassin's on missions" mechanic, otherwise I liked AC2 better.

Thanks Gunnm! I think I'll actually have more fun with it just skipping them. I've already played over 20 hours, and the filler like that kind of detracts from what's otherwise an amazing game IMO.

Ah, okay...hmm...well maybe I'll keep trying.

I hit a courtesan mission though that seems to be impossible for me. You have like 2.5 minutes to run to this doctor, get an antidote from him, and run back. I can just BARELY get to him and beat him and take the antidote from him before the time expires-either I have no clue how I'd possible get back in time. Argh, I should probably just skip this stuff.

Besides, this heavy sword I've got seems to work great for everyone.

They build up the strength/skill of your recruited assassins so it comes in handy if you summon them when facing 10 guards...the assassins show up and will obliterate them in seconds.

No you want the bone dagger of romulus. I used that thing almost exclusively for most of the game till I got the dagger of Brutus. Well I used the wrist blade a lot too.

Basically with the new kill streak mechanic, using the full sized swords or bigger for damage is useless because kill steaks are one shot kills no matter what you use. The "light" weaponry are more agile.

Anyway back on topic- no I don't think they lead to anything special to complete those. Although I loved ACB and did every mission or task that I could. I couldn't get enough.

I didn't bother doing too many of them and finished the game feeling fulfilled. Unless you're a completionist you can pass them with no consequence.

I think some of the Giant Bomb guys talked about how they were not having fun with it because they felt forced to do all that side stuff (like me) lol One of the other guys gave him "permission" to just skip it.

I can't figure out how to do that kill streak thing. I guess I've done 5 in a row but I don't really know how-I mean I know it says hit...I forget what, button 4 or something to trigger the next one, but it never works for me, not that I've needed it to so far.

I think the thing you need to realize about the kill streaks is that it is not about button mashing. One press of the attack button will start Ezio's animation to kill another guard. Just relax and let the animation play out, and when he's just about done, press the button again to get the next target. Sometimes it takes 2-3 seconds for the "flourish" animation to finish and his blade to actually land. This is especially true when his next killstreak target is an enemy that is a few steps away (i.e. the next killstreak target is not always the closest enemy). If you have executed the move properly Ezio will move over to the distant enemy and then do a kill animation, all without requiring any input on your behalf. Just let it play out. In the heat of combat this 2-3 seconds seems like an eternity and you think to yourself that you need to be issuing more actions always but really you don't.

This is what tripped me up in the beginning. I didn't see a quick stab-kill on the nearest enemy and thought the kill streak wasn't working when really it was just taking longer to execute. I think mashing the attack button while the killstreak animations are playing interrupts the streak and just gets you back to the standard attacking mode.

Once I realized that it was more about timing and less about button mashing, I became tremendously more proficient at kill streaks. Just learn when to press the button, and focus on getting the timing right, not mashing buttons. And it's so satisfying to pull off a good kill streak- you really feel like the powerful assassin with mad skills that Ezio is portrayed to be.

Huh, thanks, that's a great explanation! I'm probably hitting attack too much.

Do you have to aim at the next guy like the in-game explanation says, and you start this as you're killing a current guy?

Pathetically I still haven't played Batman

I've owned it since launch, and am REALLY excited about it, but uhhhhhh my back log is over 100 games now

Thanks though! :)

You don't ALWAYS have to aim, but you should--and you can do so as you begin your current insta-kill. It's designed for aiming so that if one of the other guards (or whomever) is about to come in and attack you while you're in the middle of your current insta-kill, aim to that incoming guy to keep the flow going while the other guards look on in horror. Muahaha! \\:D/

(In fact, if you insta-kill enough of the more well-armed guards in the group, sometimes the lesser peons among them will simply give up and run in terror. Fun!)

But back to your original topic, as soon as the faction missions opened up, I grinded my way through them (a few of them are MUCH easier later on) and gave up on the story in order to get those primo weapons (and I think there was armor to be had as well--or maybe that was from the "scraps" side quest?)--then by the time more of the regular weapons (and armor) became available in the shops, I had absolutely no use for them and could spend more money on bombs and whathaveyou.

But oh yeah, that mission with the doctor and pickpocketing his antidote (use a smokebomb), I must've restarted that 30x, easily.
