I've had Comcast for the past 10 years or so, and now that I'm moving in the next couple weeks, I've decided I'm getting Directv, since the package they offer is cheaper and has more channels than Comcast. However, this requires me to change internet as well. Comcast is ridiculous for internet if you don't have cable service, the price is insane. I can barely get Clear's own website to load it's so slow(maybe it was bad timing but everything else I checked moved fast), let alone take their internet. AT&T seemed reasonable enough cost-wise, but it gives me a couple of options I'm toying with. A regular modem is one price, but I would need to set up my own router. Then there's a wireless gateway option, which says it'll let me set up multiple sources at once, I'd assume a modem and router all-in-one type deal? Anyway, I know XBox Live can be finicky with different routers(my friend replaced his all together because it wouldn't allow him to connect to friends no matter how many work arounds he tried). Does anyone have any experience with one of these gateways and how does it handle having a 360, PS3, Wii, desktop PC, and laptop all connected at once? Would I be better off with just the basic modem and a storebought router(I've got a linksys router now but it's wired)?

Xbox Live is not in any way finicky, you just have to not be an idiot. All it takes is making sure the appropriate ports are forwarded, or, barring that, setting the 360 into the DMZ.

In regards to the gateway that AT&T uses, it's easily the biggest piece of shit I've ever used (and I've owned Belkin routers before). If at all possible, get just the modem and provide your own router.

I use one with ATT U-verse fiber optic. It's just a modem and wireless router combined. Nothing any fancier or complicated than that. Not my favorite, but it works. PS3, laptop, 360, cell phone, all at the same time, no problems.

just get a wireless router. the ones that come with these internet companies usually stink. and yes, there is actually a difference if you're wondering.

I agree. I've been through 4 (I think) over the years. The last 2 lasted a whopping year each. You'll probably get it free after rebate, but don't count on it lasting longer than a year. But perhaps in that year you can find a good deal on a new one for when it breaks down. Otherwise, just buy something else. (I currently have a Netgear DGN-2000 I believe.)

You should check craigslist for the modems since people "buy" these through AT&T and are stuck with them if they switch. When you order the new service there is an option to choose using your own modem. Search: 2wire

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was leaning towards using my own router over this thing anyway, but some bad experiences from you guys has pretty much made it official now.

In regards to XBox Live, yeah, I know it CAN work with anything, and I get how to set it up, but not everyone has the know-how to configure their settings appropriately. My friend did, and it still would, on occasion, give him "unable to join party" messages. I don't know if he did it correctly, but he would make changes and it would work for a month, then screw up again and he'd have to change it again. Me personally, I'm savvy enough to configure it, but also pretty damn lazy and want the most painless experience possible.
