I have the option of picking up this game for $30 new and wanted to know what everyone thought of the game? Reviews are mixed. There also seems to be barely any on eBay, either making this game rare/tough to find or most people liked it and kept it.

Please help me out. Any detailed recommendations of the game would be great!

Thanks,
Carl

It is NOT rare.
If that is the reason why you're buying it, then don't.
Nis America (publisher) has it online at $29.99 (+ shipping) everyday.

I have this game, but can't give you a recommendation (for or against it) since I have have only played it for about 15 minutes (initial impression seems to be good).

Was not intending on buying it for $30 because it is OR isn't rare, but because I seem to like older 2D looking RPGs. I am not a big fan of high polycounts at the expense of gameplay.

Can anyone who has ACTUALLY played this game for some time give a recommendation?

Thanks,
Carl

I can't but I CAN recommend an import RPG for you with your 2D comment. Have you heard of "Venus and Braves"? I haven't played it but have heard good things about it and it sounds like it would be right down your alley. YES it's an import and RPG but if you ever decide to learn Japanese and open yourself up to a fuller world of varied and colorful RPG's NOT released here for various reasons I doubt you'll regret buying it.

I have quite a few Japanese RPGs but that was not the point of this thread. Can anyone recommend Atelier Iris?

Thank you!

How did I know that you'd post some kind of comment where you'd ride Japan's balls yet again.

I must be psychic.

To the OP: Atelier Iris is a decent game... it's not going to reinvent the wheel, but it's your basic RPG. Kind of similar to something you'd see on the SNES. If you like older, 2-D RPG's it's worth a shot.

If "Venus and Braves" was released here I would recommend it as a sure bet based upon the reviews I've heard of people who played it but it hasn't. I'd get into berating Namco over it but I'll pass.

The SNES is the king of great RPGs! :D

Any other recommendations?!

Is it Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana or is it Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2?

The first one is pretty good; well worth the $30 if you love RPGs.

The second one is bleh.

Well if you specifically are referring to SNES I'd recommend the ENTIRE Enix Trilogy though "Illusion Of Gaia" is a bit bland.
Also "Robotrek", "Brainlord" and "7th Saga" are all good RPG's as well. Of the two former games I mention in the sentence above "Brainlord" is an Action RPG with some notable puzzles and "Robotrek" is a turn-based RPG where you create your own robot to fight in turn based battles. It's limited customization but I like it.

I felt the same way, I loved the first one but the 2nd one seemed to have lost it's charm.

Can anyone else recommend YAY or NAY for this title? I am not looking for anymore SNES RPGs as I have a ton. Let's please stick to the topic!

Thanks!

I find the game extremely annoying. The really unique aspect in this game is "synthesis" which is collecting a bunch of raw materials and convert into goods or better items, this requires lots of moving on screen and off screen for the item to respawn.I find it kinda of redundant, but some people actually enjoy this.It goes something like this

Go into town, find a barrel smash it and you get raw materials.Go out of town. Now go back to town, item respawn and smash barrel again. Now go out of town, revisit and smash it again. Now try imagining doing this times by 100.Even the thou, the synthesis is optional, without that it just an average rpg.

I just collected raw materials through out playing the game and I did most if not all of the synthesising. As long as you don't do all the synthesising at one time and spread it out through your gameplay you won't need to do what you described doing. You might need to go out of your way to collect some rare materials but not to the degree that you described it. Well atleast for my game I didn't do that.

For me, I got 75% of the menu in one regular playthrough. It took me much longer if your trying to complete the item synthesis menu and refining mana stones for ultimate weapons abilites like holy sonnata, doubles and pierce. Not to mention, you have to break down items to feed your summoning friends.

Well after reading the SNES comment I can give you some other suggestions, sorry if you've heard them before. "Shadow Hearts" and "Shadow Hearts Covenant" are two definites for me. "Unlimited Saga" isn't bad if you can manage to actually do something with the battle system. For me I recognize the potential but it seems to be merciless and gives you NO growing room to at least screw with the system in the beginning.
"Okage: The Shadow King" is another one which isn't bad. Sorry if it seems I can't pull out a ton of suggestions but I assume the typical Nippon Ichi and Atlus product would've already been mentioned to you plus I haven't heard anything more about that game Natsume was going to release here.

Not trying to be a dick here, but you really don't read do you? All I want to know about is Atelier Iris. Besides, the SH games are 3D, not 2D. Not really interested in those right now. Please stick to the topic.

Thank you and sorry for the rant. Hopefully more people have some opinions about Atelier Iris!

I'm sorry I guess I read into it wrong then. When I read the other recommendations part I assumed you wanted more PS2 RPG recommendations. The reason I listed the one's I did were the only one's most people don't cover, SH being the only exception. Seems these days almost no one except Nippon Ichi and a few fairly small RPG companies for here do the 2D RPG thing, at least on consoles.

I have been down a little on RPG's lately and Atelier Iris did a damn good job of bringing me back. The story/graphics/system don't reinvent the wheel, but I found the dialogue very solid and humorous, especially the interactions between the main character and his mana. It definately reminds me more of an SNES type RPG.
