The newest Dengeki PlayStation in Japan says Atelier Rorona will be revealed in the next issue on 3/27/09. In case many of you didn't know, Gust (the makers of the Atelier, Mana Khemia, and Ar Tonelico series) announced they were developing a PS3 game long ago, and they were looking for PS3 programmers.

Maybe one of their titles will finally have better graphics than Xenogears and Final Fantasy Tactics...

Didn't Persona 4 sell like twice as many copies as Disgaea 3? You'd think these companies would learn that there's nothing to gain by migrating to a next-gen console if you're not going to take advantage of it. Newcomers aren't impressed and the existing audience is happy to stick with their PS2s and handhelds.

Newcomers aren't impressed and the existing audience is happy to stick with their PS2s and handhelds.
It's because PS2 is on its way out and developers NEED to move on (many sales of popular PS2 series are starting to drop now. DW Gundam 2 did around the same on PS3/PS2 and Pro Evolution Soccer on PS3 has even outsold the PS2 version in Japan. A year ago the situation was different, but things are starting to shift over). Persona has always sold more than Disgaea even in Japan, so that's not really a good comparison. Plus being on PS3, the game can now have DLC, trophies, various PSN features, and other great features you just cannot get on PS2 anymore (along with being scaling much nicer to HD resolutions. Playing a PS2 game on an HDTV is just ugly). I've been waiting for Gust to go next gen (Nippon Ichi is done with PS2 development and so is Idea Factory) for a while and glad they finally are. Many PS3 owners at PlayStation Universe and other forums are ecstatic over the news (being Gust fans themselves). Believe me, there will be plenty buying this game, and there's also money to be made in DLC (NIS has released tons for Disgaea, and just released a huge expansion pack for it in Japan).

Gust also makes handled games too (DS has seen some Atelier games), but they also develop for consoles oh course.

This game probably won't come stateside until 2010, and by them PS3 consoles should be $250-$300.

Right now we don't know if this will look just like the PS2 games, or rather it gets a pretty good graphic overhaul (which would not surprise me since Gust announced a PS3 project back in 2006). I know NIS said their next developed game will be that way (unlike Disgaea 3, which was produced in just a year).

That may be true, but there's no reason they can't migrate to PSP instead, or even PSN/WiiWare-type releases. I just think it's ridiculous that games like Disgaea 3, Spectral Force 3, etc., games that essentially haven't moved beyond the PSX era in any meaningful way, get released for next-gen consoles when there are more appropriate avenues for that kind of experience.

Hell, maybe they'll surprise me and this new Atelier will have innovative gameplay and beautiful high-res art that wouldn't have been possible on PS2 or PSP. I'm not holding my breath though.

They don't migrate to PSP because sales for PSP games mostly only come from Japan due to high piracy and other factors in other regions (even sales on PS3 are better). The reason it doesn't go PSN/Wii-Ware is because the percentage of people who use their console to download games is VERY low in Japan, and many times a retail presence is needed (that's why Echochrome and even a really small game like The Last Guy has gotten or getting a retail presence). If it was made for the western audience in mind, then its quite possible to go that route. They did make a pretty big fuss about it being on blu-ray, so who knows. While I wouldn't be against a PSN release for the west (sounds like a good idea to me), NIS America does like doing fancy packaging with games with bonus items.

While Disgaea 3 might have stuck to the same sprites in the graphics, the character art was HD resolution which looked great. I pretty much guarantee the new Atelier on PS3 will be this way. A big difference between Disgaea 3 and Atelier on PS3 still has to do with development time (Gust has been working on PS3 for a while it seems, if not as long as NIS), so they might have spent a lot of time on their PS3 engine (or maybe just let their PS3 kits sit, we dunno).

I'm with ya Mana Knight. I played the crap out of the Atelier Iris series and am going through Mana Khemia on the psp right now. This should be interesting!

The Atelier series isn't any fun. I have no desire to play another one in the series after the abortion that was Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana.

I guess it's not for everyone. I personally loved AI1. I'm curious, what didn't you like about it?

I was just riffing on punk's signature. I never bothered picking up any of the series because of the reviews and the emphasis on alchemy (a feature I've always despised in RPGs). However, I picked up Mana Khemia, so I'll see how it goes.

Anyway, I'm glad this is coming out for the PS3. We definitely need some more RPGs.

 Not my quote, and I really really disagree with it, but too many people think I echo the sentimentality. :whistle2:( I'm taking it off now.

I think that main cause of that is Persona 4 being a much better game. :D
I think that main cause of that is Persona 4 being a much better game. :D
Well, duh, although I felt Disgaea 3 was pretty good.

Putting NIS games on Wii isn't any better since I heard Phantom Brave Wii (it sold like 100k or so on PS2) sold like 2.3k in the first week, while Disgaea 3 (even though it was new) pulled in much more (closer to 60k-70k).

Regardless, some images have been posted:

Keep in mind that Gust is a VERY small company here, so what they made looks very impressive.

The site's been updated with wallpapers and a bunch of new info (none of which I understand). Looks like we'll be playing as a young and older version fo Rorona, which probably has something to do with the timeline.

I've never played this series, is the fighting similar to the Tales series, or do your players stand in one spot the whole time?

turned based, so ya one spot the whole time

I was always optimistic that they would bring the game over but I was still a bit surprised when I saw the announcement. Can't wait to pick this up once it comes out here.
Wow, it is so far off.
Actually, not really. Gust tends to release their Atelier games every June, and it takes NIS America a year to bring them over.

Made my pre-order last Sat, had to spell out the name of the game for the guy at the counter . Couldn't pass up that Art Book and Case just for pre-ordering so GS won this round.

Yea on the fence going to see if I can find a review as I want this title but don't want another Cross Edge.
I have my Limited Box pre-ordered at Gamestop and I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow! :bouncy:

Well you are going to be disappointed. I just talked to Gamestop, today was "shipping" day not release day.

I hate Gamestop for doing that they put the day a game ships on their website not when it will actually be in store or at your house. I was hoping to get my pre-order on the way home. Not happening I guess. :bomb:

If you order it online at GS, please tell us know if they ship it in a box or in an bubble envelope. I imagine the outer case can get damaged if shipped in an envelope.

Just moved it to the top of my Gamefly list. Their release date is 9/30. Stuck 3 games in the mail today, so 9/30 will probably be the day those games get there. I usually have pretty good luck getting games on the first day of release if I have a game getting back on that day.

I know RPGfan is known for giving relatively high ratings across the board, so an 8.5 is kind of middle of the road for them (though "middle of the road" is generally good enough for me for a JRPG). Anyone know about RPGamer? How good is a 4.5/5 for them?

I guess, I could...you know...look up their ratings myself, but well...yeah.

Edit: Went and looked it up myself. A 4.5/5.0 actually is good for that site.

Yup, I came home disappointed... They didn't have it. Some of the people who ordered it off NISA's site got it Saturday.

Well maybe that Ashely fuck will call with the pre-order msg tonight. If not I'll just call tomorrow and see if it came in. (they told me they may not even get it until Thursday)

I was told that they should have it on Thursday... It was sad.

Those of you who get the game, please post more about it. I've never really played any NIS games and I really was interested in this game.

It's a Gust game, not a NIS game. NISA is just handling the localization.

had planned to pick this up tonight ended up being a no go fat guy at game stop was wondering what the hell it was while checking out the lady with big boobs next to me.

This is definitely on my list. Looks old-school enough to pique my interest, yet the graphics look PS3-ish which is always nice. Reviews seem to be good.

I'm kinda on a fence on this. I'm pretty disappointed with selection of NIS published games for ps3. Both Cross Edge and Trinity Universe are a piece of shit. I never played Last Rebellion, but I heard a lot of negative reviews. Hopefully, this is good Gust game like Atelier Iris or Mana Khemia series, not the bad kind like Trinity Universe. I'm waiting for other CAG opinions on it.

If anyone gets the GameStop LE release, can you describe the packaging? An outer box that holds the game...and the artbook? A really biiiiig outer box or something?

My NIS Store release just had the artbook, CD, and game in bubble wrap. I was kind of hoping the game and CD would be in the "outer box" shown in the GS release. You know, because it actually looks awesome and has the main character on the cover! :p

I would love to order from GS if it came with everything in the picture of their website. But I bet it would be the game and artbook only. Is there really an outer box to go along with it? Anyone know?
