Atlus - The Dark Spire for the DS - it's OUT! (IGN 8.0, GI 7.0)

I haven't run into a riddle yet. I like fighting the flying coins. Tons of gold and at level 3, my characters typically resist their "breath weapon" attack.

Put about an hour into the game so far. Really liking it but it's hard to go back into old school mode. Leveling is slow but rewarding and luck plays a big role in the game.

How is everyone leveling up? Just putting the EP into class levels or working on skills? Also, what the hell is up with dancing and knitting skills?

I've only levelled up my classes. I was tempted to put points into my Thief's disarm skill but I don't know if that'll make a difference. I really wish there was a good FAQ for this game but the only thing I've found so far is a very bare Wiki.

Finally picked this up using my free $25 "Gamestop survey" gift card. But it's going to the backlog for now.

I am glad it's the same "big box" version as Luminous Arc 2 and Legacy of Y's. I'm surprised Atlus only charged $29.99 for this rather than $34.99.

I don't know what a "Gamestop survey" gift card is (seems like I must have missed something there ;)) but I do have the $10 coupon from the botched Game Day sales orders. I couldn't figure out what to use that on - guess I could order this online and cancel my in-store preorder since they've probably sold it to someone else or gutted it by now.

There's actually a thread about it here (either in Other Deals or Free Stuff). If you sign up to ERewards using the GS promotion (I think you have to receive an email invitation), you can take surveys for free GS gift cards. I average about 1 $25 giftcard per quarter while taking a few surveys a week (most of them not even full surveys). Pretty sweet, actually.

I just got my copy... I'm kinda irritated that they shipped it in one of those single DVD mailers as the game's box is much thicker than a DVD but luckily, it wasn't crushed or anything. But the cover was scratched really bad.:whistle2:?

Oh well, I'll give this a go as soon as I finish RGC.

I can second that. It's pretty easy money and unlike what I've heard about some online survey-filling programs, they actually send your stuff out to you pretty quickly. I actually used my last $25 card to help pay for this and King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match.

Yep, I just picked it up yesterday and have put a couple of hours into it. So far I may like it even more than Etrian Odyssey! One question, since my copy didn't have an instruction manual--is there a way to tell how equipping a weapon affects your attack rating? I may have missed it but I didn't see it. Your AC is easy to tell, but I unequipped and equipped different weapons and didn't see how to tell which one was better?

Guess no one else is playing this? I've got my team up to about level 6, and things are getting a little easier--At least I can venture a battle or two into the basement before I have to limp my ass back to town! LOL.

Anyone have any good hints on levelling up? It seems 95% of the time I only get 1 HP. Even doing the saving beforehand trick gets annoying when you restart 5 times and still never get more than 1 HP!

I'm definitely liking it more than EO so far. The interface has a few things I wish they'd done differently, but that's a minor $$$$le.

Well its kind of hard to explain the way the system works to be honest. Its not anywhere in the manual, and from what I can get from it, its sort of like D&D. Cause apparently the damage is mainly affected by the weapon, but the STR will help determine how high or how low your damage can go, but since your damage is random, it can vary from very high to very low, but if your STR is higher, at least it will increase the range of how much damage you can do with the weapon you have. It also has a lot to do with the Armor class of the enemy and other stuff. They don't explain any of this in the manual, so you just have to play it out to figure it out.

Also the way the levelin works, its a random boost. Majority of the time you only gain 1HP. But normally I just try to save before I'm bout to level up and then reload if I only get 1HP. The game has the L+R+Start+Select quick reset, so its actually not too bad to restart. And it loads pretty fast anyways, so if you really want to get the best out of each level, that might be the best way to go, but very tedious. But any easy way to level, not really, lol.

Just wanted to say thank you to CAG for posting the $10 deal. It's worth every penny.

I love the style It oozes - brings me back to The Dungeon Master and TDM: Chaos Strikes Back days!

Where you pretty much had one big ass dungeon and the same town to visit. The only thing I don't like is I have to cast a spell just to see where I am on the map, but other then that It's awesome.

I'm glad they use the coverbox because gamestop didn't gut the actual game shrinkwrap ... thy just opened the cardboard box. Looks pretty sweet for 10 bucks. Anyone playing in the 'classic' mode?

I do for a bit. My eyes are not what they once were so more than 20 minutes and my eyes start to bug out

Just created my harem of adventurers. Maria(War), Xiaomu(THF), Rosa(PST), Rydia(MGE).

Everytime the battle progress shows Xiaomu, I have to read it Xiaomuuuuuu!! :3

Man, I'm stuck pretty hard. I've looked at maps and walkthroughs and I still dont understand what I need to do. Theres a ton of doors on the first floor that I'm supposed to walk through in a certain order to unlock some other doors or something...Something about clicks that need to turn into clanks and bah.

I think I'm just gonna go replay Knights in the Nightmare so I can get the other endings.

That puzzle is probably the easiest in the whole game. Walk down one hallway until you get the correct click (or clank), then walk down the other hallway, turn around and walk back down the same one again. Done.

I've been trying to play this for the past couple days, but the brutal difficulty is a big turn-off for me. Glad I only paid $9.99 for this. It's $4.99 now at Gamestop, new, for those who are interested. This one is going to Goozex.

lol i need to stop buying this game..

i got it a few days after it came out on ebay for like 20 shipped complete..
then ran to gamestop when they dropped it to 10 grabbed 1

then ran back to gamestop when they dropped to 5 grabbed 2..

guess im trying to get my avg price lowered LOL

The only tip I can give for difficulty is to grind out a few levels on the first floor. Like the entrance to the first floor :p Once you've done so, at least the smaller mobs won't be as much trouble.

Formation is a big key. Use the heroic formation with your warrior/tank out front. Make sure your warrior has high defense and set up the three in back with ranged weapons and magic.

Take out any enemy spell-casters first...kill them quickly, or silence them first if it'll take more than one turn to kill the caster mob.

Putting mobs to sleep works well, especially when the mob is stronger than your party or you're dealing with more than one mob. And you do more damage when hitting a sleeping enemy (since they can't defend...although, you can still miss, which makes no sense), thereby killing them in less hits.

But, yeah, grinding is still a big part.

Honestly, I like the game a lot, but then it reminds me of the games I played as a kid, so a lot of that is due to nostalgia. YMMV.

I tried playing this after picking it up at GS for $5. NO. Got pwned too much. Trading it into Gazelle now.. $8.15. Not a complete lost I suppose.
