People "lurk" because there is a large portion of the CAG crowd that seems to make it their duty to harrass Newbies as much as possible. Honestly, many people just don't want to deal with that. Lurkers may also find it hard to jump into conversations that are going on among cliques of CAGers that have inside jokes and preexisting knowledge of one another. At least those are my thoughts. I've been frequenting CAG since the beginning of 2003, but didn't register on the board until last year. I would read a few threads here and there and see the way people with low post counts were treated. It's pretty silly that many people often base the value of someone's words upon how many times they speak and not what they say.

So...anyways... hello.

This group is about the most unwelcoming bunch there is, so you shouldn't be surprised.

Plus, many of us just want the "deals", and get out.

i'm not a "veteran CAG" and there are preexisting friendships and assholes on the board, but dems da breaks. How do you do? I like ice cream, we can skip the wedding.

I would guess that this is the primary reason that most lurkers "lurk", which is a shame.

Personally, I don't find that many "new" deals to post. I don't spend hours scouring the Internet or B&M stores for deals that no one else has found yet. That's why I come to CAG :). This is a great site, but the other residents are much, much faster at posting deals than I am. So I'm quite content to sit back and watch (a.k.a. lurk) with an occasional thank you to an OP for a deal or to chime in on a random issue here and there.

I think Stace pretty much sums it up for every well established message board. It's like being the new kid in senior year. Hard to get rollin with everyone else.
Many of the deals i have found have already been posted before I found them or aren't good enough to be posted at all.
Just keep looking and trying and eventually you'll find a deal that noone else has and people will be grateful and warm up to you.
I still feel like a newbie here and don't bother posting in the OTTs. If you don't rock the boat people won't fall out. Just be friendly and helpful and youll fit in just fine.
 
i like this message board becaue it isn't always hunky dory (great album btw) and candy coated.

other boards i've been on are regulated in a way that is really suffocating and artificial. Some people are jerks, others have really bad social skills, and most are good peoples, I think it's fine to have that replicated in the artifice of the internet.

besides, even the most assholish behavior on CAG doesn't compare to real colleges and highschools, at least here we all agree to that gaming is fun and should be cheap.

Now kittie, that's not exactly true.
Sure, there's a fair number of really hostile people, and quite a few people that are really negative, but thier's also a good core group of fairly welcoming and accomodating people. Though, to be fair, most of them are on the deal and trade boards and not really frequenting the OT areas all that much.
 
I don't think CAG is mean to people with low post counts. There is always going to be a few people who are assshats no matter what. Get over it NOOBS.

Well said. I do disagree with a few points, but you do raise and support quite a few valid criticisms. However, I wouldn't say that very many of them are even specific to CAG, but rather that they are behaviors that run rampant on the entire internet.

I don't know about the others in here, but I post from time to time. That's why I have an avatar/sig. I think that lurkers set up their profiles with the intent to read the board and post, but once they get into the forums and see the way that other newbies are treated, they are hesitant to post due to the aforementioned bullying and such.
