[Back!] Otogi 2 $20 at Walmart.com

A strange question:

I have recently watched the anime Otogizoushi, and from reviews, I've noticed the same character names, i.e. Raikoh, Tsuna, Seimei, Sadamitsu, Kintaro, etc in Otogi 2. Both happen in ancient Japan, specifically the Heian period for the anime.

Does anyone know if these are related to a common myth, or story, or folklore? Unfortunately, the damn fangled interweb has not been very helpful in my searches. If not, it's still a pretty interesting connection.
They are characters from the Taiheki, which the play Rashomon was based on. A short excerpt of Tsuna and Raikohs roles in it.

The subect is drawn from the legendary exploits of the warrior Wantanabe Tsuna (963-1024). The Rashomon Gate, which once marked the southern entrance to the old capital of Kyoto, was said to be inhabited by a demon who assaulted innocent passerbys and hapless domestic animals. Tsuna, charged by his master, Minamoto Raiko, with the task of slaying the evil creature, was able only to cut off its hairy, claw-handed arm. Vowing that he would return to claim the severed limb, the demon escaped. Tsuna presented Ibaraki’s arm to his master, who locked it in a casket and recited Buddhust sutras for seven days. On the sixth day, Raiko’s aunt came to visit and begged to see the arm. Against his better judgment, Raiko consented. The aunt, who was actually the demon in disguise, seized the arm and departed. The story of Ibaraki was widely popularized in the No play, Rashomon, which was based on the Taiheiki, a classic of the fourteenth century.

Hope my years of Japanese history finally helped in something.
Thanks for the info.

Since you mentioned it, is the story in any way related to the Kurosawa movie Rashomon? It doesn't seem to have the same plot, but are there some connections?
There are limited connections in that both Rashomon the movie and the Taiheki have events that occur around the Rashomon gates. During the Heian period the Rashomon gate was the most elaborate of the two gates that lead into kyoto (the capital) during the Heian period and a lot of important events or myths are therefore based around it. Around the 12th century the Rashomon gates had fallen into extreme disrepair and instead had become a hideout for thieves, people would also often abandon corpses or unwanted babies at the gate. For Kurosawa, setting his movie Rashomon at the gates was used symbolically to highlight the moral and physical decay of japanese culture and civilization as represented by the fate of the gates themselves and the events that occur around them.

How am I arrogant?

You guys must be people that play every game on easy mode.
Oh, sorry. Condescending was a better word.
This is why games get dumbed down sometimes when they're brought over from Japan.
And sometimes they make games harder when they get brought over here. What's your point? Was Otogi dumbed down?
If not wanting a good game to be called crap because *some people* think its too hard makes me arrogant, then you can kiss my arrogant, condescending ass.

There are people who like games like Otogi, Ninja Gaiden, and Battletoads, and there are people that play every game on easy, with a walkthrough, and probably with some cheats too. I'm getting tired of having games designed for the latter group, and its a refreshing change when a game is actually *hard*.

I know what you mean, and I feel that an "AW, SNAP!" is in order.

.....

AW, SNAP!!!!!! Way to defend yourself!

Which is why there is a Hard mode in addition to the Easy mode in most games...

OK, to clear things up, Otogi 1 and 2 are boring (IMO) because the action is dull and repetitive and the camera is annoying. Compare the actual gameplay of this game to ng and dmc3. What combat options do you have in Otogi? It's just slash slash slash spell, slash slash hard slash, and jumping/dashing around the place. In NG you have a ton of weapons and defensive moves at your disposal, all unique (though not all useful). DMC also has multiple unique and useful weapons, in addition to the fighting styles. The stars of the show in otogi are the graphics and monster design and those aren't what make a game fun.

Second, dafoomie, for all you talk about difficulty, you don't put your money where your mouth is. I don't see you ranked in the first 1600 slots in the master ninja tournament #2 (I am 920 as of this morning), and your team slayer win ratio is around 30%. I don't see the point of coming in here and complaining about how people that rag on otogi must be people that only play games on easy. What position are you in to do that?

I don't think that has anything to do with difficult games.

Well my copy of the game came in today and thats what I call fast shipping.

Ordered it Saturday night. Best $1.97 I ever spent on shipping.

No, it doesn't really have anything to do with difficult games (since maybe he just isn't so hot at NG and Halo 2), but, since he put so much effort into finding all that data for us, I'll give him an "AW, SNAP!" as well, since clearly, that is what he wanted.

"AW, SNAP!!!"

(wtf?? shouldn't this post be appearing at the END of the thread??

Just to make things clear, both Otogi games are not crap. They are two of the most beautiful sounding and looking games on the Xbox. The problem with them is that alot of the fun is taken away since there is basicly a time limit.

I have not played Halo 2 since Mechassault 2 came out, at the end of December.

I have not picked up Ninja Gaiden since I beat it the first time.

You can feel free to check my Mechassault 2 stats, if you'd like, but I don't have to justify myself to you. I did not claim to be better than anyone. I just don't like that people are saying that Otogi sucks because its hard.

And if you think that Halo 2 is a difficult game online, dream on.

man, Battletoads was mega-hard! ](*,) fun, but i don't think i ever beat that game...if course, i didn't own a NES either, so i couldn't devote the time necessary to master such a challenge.....

oh, i picked up Otogi 2, btw, after checking for it at a brick 'n mortar. they didn't have it, but i was surprised at the large selection of "older" games they had on hand.

ORDERED....i totally caved..but i love games like this..the first one was great and the particle effects are amazing on the second one. my buddy owned it and i had to get it :whistle2:[

Ok, I'm not sure if any of you guys would rather spend 5 extra dollars to get it in-stores and not have to wait for it to ship. I went to Fry's yesterday and I saw it for the price of $24.99. Last time I checked it was $29.99 but I guess the price dropped $5. Should be a great deal to anyone.

all i gotta say is the speed bike stage is the most ridiculously hard stage in any game I've ever played. I haven't tried it out in a few years though, I may have to go back and see if i can FINALLY conquer it.

Great game. not the deepest (or even all that hard) but the graphics, which are fucking amazing, and the massive amounts of destruction make it quite fun!

Thanks for posting this deal OP!

I was about to order it, but then sales tax showed up and I was a little annoyed (they don't make it clear anywhere that there will be sales tax, until right when you're about to finalize your order). Then I noticed that the tax they were charging me seemd a bit high... Then I calculated how much tax they were charging me and it was more than 9%, which is really high--higher than my state's sales tax... WTF? I'm not sure how they can get away with crap like that.

Further proof of something I already knew.

Walmart sucks.

I'm not sure why they were charging you more than your state sales tax, but the common rule about paying tax on the net is that if they have a store in your state, you're going to pay the tax. And since Walmart is everywhere, of course you'd have to pay tax buying from their website.

this has nothing to do with the OP.. but Halo 2 is boring.. after you learn the spawn points its not even fun.. and nobody cares what your Team Slayer rank is. I don't..
