Backing up PS2 saves with a PSP

I own a PS2 and a PSP. I have 40+ games for PS2 but only two 8mb memory cards for PS2. As you can imagine, I'm running out of space, and I'm trying to avoid buying additional memory cards. If I had a PS3 obviously this wouldn't be a problem, cause of its hard drive. But, I'm not going to buy one just yet (if I even buy one in the future).

I have a PSP with a 4gb memory stick. I know that PSP can connect to PS2 via USB, but apparently it's only for certain games. It didn't work the way I thought it would; I thought if you went into the "Browser" and connected your PSP via USB it would show up just like the memory cards and discs do, then you could copy your saves from the PS2 memory cards over to the PSP. I did that for my PS1 memory card, backing up my PS1 saves to my PS2 card.

I've heard stuff about Max Media Manager being able to do what I want, allowing you to copy your PS2 save files to your PSP. Is this true? And, is there anything out there that can do this, but for free?
