Anyone here ever play (or hear about) Bahamut Lagoon? It was a SNES RPG never released outside of Japan made by Square-Soft.
I had never heard about it until I was reading a discussion at some forum (GAF?) about best SNES RPG and someone brought it up. Never having heard about it, I looked it up and saw some fantastic graphics and was intrigued since it was a Square game during their golden age (the SNES/PS1 era) before they started sucking.
So I... 'obtained' copy but never got around to playing it until now. And damn! It's such an awesome game! It's part strategy and part RPG.
It works like this: you begin battles like you do any strategy game, you can cast spells and what not. But if you're close to an enemy, you have the option of getting into turn based combat. The turn-based part is for one round only (your party attacks once, the enemy attacks once) before it goes back to the strategy view. You have dragons which fight along with your (they're AI controlled but you have some say in when they attack, follow you, or just wait).
The coolest thing, while it doesn't play a major role in the game, is that magic effects the battle field. Need to cross a river? Use some ice magic and build a bridge. See enemies on a big grass field? Set it on fire. Need to destroy a wall (which restores health) or a bridge with enemies on it? Use thunder to destroy it (and kill any enemies on that bridge!).
It's amazing how much better these old RPGs are than today's run of the mill crap (minus a few great ones like KH, SH, and the SMT series and ToS). I've already put 7 hours into it within the past 4 days, which is a lot since I don't have much time to play games here.
