I've personally been waiting for this to drop myself, but here's to anyone else who is interested at this price.

Loved this game, but it's not for everyone. I wish there were more roguelikes like this and less of the ones with bullshit ASCII graphics.

Is this the game where you were SUPPOSED to keep dying and starting over just to progress similar to Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter?

I..got...kind of freaked out playing it. I don't like the whole "just run and stop fighting" thing that could sometimes happen when you went really low but couldn't really fight the monsters. It's extremely intriguing and different and I really enjoyed the weird WTF? in it, but...yeah. It also seems very much like a FAQ game where you will just never learn or see some stuff without consulting guides, which I really hate and is too common.

Totally NOT GOING TO BE POPULAR for a good reason, so no need to come in this thread en mass and flame the hell out of the game; but if you like dungeon crawling combined with crazy shit, this might be a good game for you. The wii version is in widescreen, compared to the ps2 game, but is the motion control forced(for I think the heavy swing)? Would be a really annoying waggle attack, I played it on ps2.

Yes and no. You don't always want to die to further along the story/game, but yes dieing was an integral part of the game.
...and less of the ones with bullshit ASCII graphics.
Aww, I like the ones w/ ASCII graphics. Absolutely charming. Likely because I played those as a kid. Nostalgia FTW.

Also, text adventures (or interactive fiction, if you will...)? Text adventures are awesome.

I'll have to see if there are any complete copies of Baroque nearby.

Bought this new last month and it didn't work, returned it and bought another one at the same Toys R Us and that didn't work either.

I don't know if that's a widespread problem, but it's the only game that wouldn't load in my Wii no matter what I did.

My TRU still has a bunch of these for 9.98 (Wii and PS2). I thought about picking it up, but it seems like a really frustrating game.

I love roguelike games, used to play some of them as a kid. May have to try the PS2 version of this, seems to be better than the Wii version (PS2 gets a 60). Here's the Wii metacritic info:

Summary: Baroque is a dungeon-crawling action RPG in which you awaken to find the world in ruin, your heart beset with unexplained guilt. A cataclysm has destroyed the cities and empires of men and disfigured the spirit of humanity. In this nightmare, it falls to you to descend a mysterious tower in search of absolution. Battle merciless foes through treacherous dungeons, scour for new items to aid you in your travels, and unlock the secrets of a devastated land. You will find death in the depths, yet learn that death is not the end of the story; in the twisted world of Baroque, it is only the beginning. With its many ever-changing levels, each teeming with perverse monsters and tormented souls, the world of Baroque is a frightening and unforgiving realm. Take part in a unique story progression system in which the end of your life only serves to drive the adventure forward. Each time your character dies, more secrets about the forsaken world are revealed! The player has full control over how he shapes his character and how he plays the game. Find and equip a vast assortment of weapons and items, some with a variety of uses. Acquire powerful stat-boosting parasites and combine them to multiply their potency. Only the resourceful will survive! [Atlus USA]…

Damn, none near a 40-50 mile radius from me. Oh well, I don't need another game, my backlog is in the 20's right now

Nice deal though. Is this game available anywhere else cheap besides TRU? TRU is going to be a pain in the ass to go there.

My husband got me this a year or so back, and while I love roguelikes and Atlus, this one was almost too weird for me. The way it just kept hammering you with seemingly nonsensical imagery meant the snippets of detail it gave you were almost TOO little to really keep you going and counterbalance the confusion with the occasionally brutal gameplay.

To be fair, I played a fair amount of it despite not knowing what the hell was happening, until at one point, I got all the way to the end of the dungeon, and instead of firing the weapon you need to fire to progress, I accidentally hit the button to "throw" it instead, and it got tossed into an irretrievable location. I was... fairly upset, since it basically meant I had to reload, and I'd gotten a fair amount of progress and good items from that run. It seemed like a pretty massive oversight on the developer's part that they would let you throw away a plot item you needed to proceed, and not have any way you could off yourself in the final area if you did.

Maybe enough time has passed, and I can have another go at it, though. I'm kind of surprised to see it getting such a high recommendation. It WAS interesting, I just... I've just been burned so BAD. :(

Checked my local TRU and they had about 5 copies for PS2 @ 9.98, so I picked one up. Now I just need to break out my PS2 slim to try it out sometime . . . not easy considering my huge backlog of games for the new-gen systems. :whistle2:#

The versions identical. The difference in metacritic rating is merely a few different reviewers between versions. The graphics, sound, etc are all the same for each version but the Wii version can use progressive scan and widescreen.

The game is a solid enough if you take it for what it is (small scale remake of a PS1/Saturn title) and don't expect something cutting edge.
Sold out around me. Sounds like a Demon's Souls brutal game; good stuff.
Nothing similar really.
Similar in that Baroque sounds pretty unforgiving. :)
Again, not really. You died in DS to learn and try again. You die in baroque because the story requires you to die, so sometimes you'll just do it on purpose. I'm not trying to nit pick here but no one should look at baroque at ALL just because they liked demon's souls and the games got compared somehow.

This game is nothing like Demon Soul's which I thought was great. Baroque is a very odd game. I fell out of the game but liked it. I got to a point were I think I needed to die on purpose to move the story or get clues to what the heck was going on. I think I paid $10 bucks for it and got my money's worth but can't recommend it because it is way out there.

If anyone is playing for the first time I suggest they find a guide that says where the consciousness orbs are. They let you send a single item out of the dungeon, so you don't lose everything and can stock up on good stuff for a full run.

I like rogue-likes, but are you saying this has a "story" and cutscenes? Sounds like a great way to make a rogue-like, something that needs to play quickly due to all the unplanned dying, into a real drag. I guess I'll pass on this if so.
