Batman:Arkham City Gets "Online" Pass for its single player game
Wait, people didn't already know about this? I heard about this like a month ago.
It may have been rumor but today is the first day we got confirmation from WB I believe. It sounds like it locks you out of 4 story based missions with catwoman and maybe some challenge room stuff. Even though it is in the story mode it is not vital to the endgame of the story I guess.

Wait, these online passes DO come initially included with the game... right?

Mortal Kombat had a free online pass.

I'm not paying $9.99 or more just to play some DLC.
not an issue for me im buying ths day 1 but still thats really dick shit.
I agree...I was buying this game day 1 regardless. The only thing I find that sucks is offline players (those without internet) who like single player games are left out in the cold. Not sure how many people that really hurts but it is bad business to sell essentially an offline game and require you to be online.

Someone (at least claimed that they) got ahold of the game about three weeks ago on GameSpot's forums and they posted about the pass and what it added to the game.

All NEW copies have the pass...no worries if you are buying it new.

I am surprised I never read about that. I would have thought it would have made bigger headlines...now every outlet is talking about it today... :)

Never heard about it until now. I will be skipping this game now.

There are many gamers in my house and when they limit content to one user it punishes everyone else. Why should I have to pay an extra $20-$30 for everyone in my house to enjoy the full experience? Before the excuse was support for multiplayer servers now they are limiting the single player experience.

It wouldn't be the problem if I was the only person playing it but I'm not. I once read that online was the worst thing to ever happen to the industry and now I'm starting to see it. Local multiplayer is vanishing from games. Online passes for single player content. Always on DRM and spyware that monitors your activities or Steam-like activations that can disable all your games (including physical discs) when they think your cheating or someone tries to hack your account. All this behind "lowest bidder" tech support where it is impossible to find a human that can speak English or think beyond the script in front of them.

I'm done my rant now. The industry seems to have gone soft in the head. Well at least there is always GoG.

I do not have other gamers in my house but I thought these passes unlocked the content for anyone using the xbox/PS3 it was unlocked on? I am not sure if it is the same as the COD maps where someone can use my maps if they are playing on my xbox but with their gamertag. If each individual in a household has to pay an extra $10 to use catwoman on the same console that is BS to the nth degree.

The only reason people are complaining about it are because they made it sound like Catwoman would be part of the main game.

depends on the company belive ive heard that some are set to console where some are set to the user.
Dragon Age II and Alice: Madness Returns both had "online passes" despite being fully single player games.
I suppose, but in DAII the content was a little bonus shop and in Alice it was a copy of the original game. Here, Catwoman has been a relatively prominent point in Arkham City's advertising. The difference is pretty stark, and it's pretty bad form to officially announce less than a week before release that you're "online passing" something you represented as a significant chunk of your wholly single player game.

And, of course, there's the issue of how badly this screws people who don't connect their consoles to the internet.

Soon enough console games will start having cd keys just like PC games. And not only that, but you have to be connected online to use 'em. I'm really starting to hate the business side of the current gen.

Yeah, between this and all the DLC they already have lined up to the point to have the "complete" game is gonna run me and extra $20? Yeah... I'll wait for a price drop. This bites because I was amped for this game, but $60 for the game new, 7.00 for Night wing, 7.00 for Robin, and 5.00 for the skins pack? It's just too much.
I'm buying it for PC, so this point is moot. ^__^
PC version gets the DLC version for free? That's a new one on me.

No offense to people who don't have their consoles connect to the internet, but I don't care about this in the least bit. It's actually beyond irrelevant to me. Day one purchase.

Apparently GameStop has a special deal with Warner Bros. where they can give out the online pass even with used copies. Given that they're the biggest purveyor of used games, it seems like it defeats the entire purpose of the pass.

Yeah I read this today. I assume this is WB partially embracing the used market in order to ensure some return on their game. This is great for those buying used but it is just making your product that much more of a hassle to maintain....It make me miss the days the biggest issue I had was blowing into the cartridge to get the game to fully work.

Not if they are getting kickbacks from GameStop to compensate. That's really the main issue with used games from their perspective: they don't get the cash.

They will be easy to source on eBay anyhow.

But yeah, isn't that the whole reason this online pass got introduced? Second Hand trading? ~puzzled

:applause:Sometimes I let a buddy of mine play my games once I'm done with them. To lock part of the game that's actually on the fuckin' disc unless he pays Warner Bros. $10 for a pass to get access to the content is bullshit.

I could see if it was paid DLC that you had to pay for and download seperately, but they have been pretty aggressively marketing the game and making it seem like Catwoman is a big part in the storyline. Even if she's not, to lock out a portion of the game unless you fork over extra cash is horsecrap.

How does this work if you do t have Internet?

How do play this game in a few years when the dlc content / servers are no longer up?

Seems pretty dumb to me.

Yeah, that's one of my biggest issues with online passes for single player content. At least with multiplayer online passes, you won't have to worry about it in the future because if the servers are down, you can't play the game anyway. But with single player games, you're screwed.

You don't, and fuck you for complaining. That's the industry's attitude anyway.

Goodbye retro gaming; long live disposable gaming...

They'll re-release it as an UHDTV 4320p version on the next console with "bonus" content.
