Batman: The Dark Knight - Movie Thread - $158.3 Million First Weekend
I was at a theater with an awesome sound system, he 100 percent said i'm going for Rachel as he ran out. So unless he changed his mind 1.2 seconds later I think the Joker gave the wrong address
Exactly what I was thinking

He blatently went for rachel, if you listen to the addresses that joker say dent is at it is the same exact address Gordon tells his police to go to... so i have no idea where your getting that bruce is trying so save dent instead of rachel.
but...
isn't it more in line with Joker's character to know that Bruce would choose Rachael over Harvey, so by telling him the wrong locations, he gets to play with his mind and he gets Batman to rescue the person that he really wants him to rescue in Harvey? I'm 99.99% sure this is how it went down, but as others have said, with Bale's lion voice, I missed a lot of what he said during the movie.
Maybe he gave the opposite address on purpose for two reasons.

1. He knew Batman would go Rachael.

2. He also knew that losing Rachael would cause Dent to lose control and would jeopardize all that Dent worked for(meaning all the criminals he put away will walk). Remember when Joker was captured, he mentioned it was part of his plan to drive Dent to mad.

Oh and it should be mentioned that Gary Oldman mentioned during an interview that a Dark Knight video game should be coming out around the same time as the DVD. He said something about the developer trying to nail the gliding from one building to another, so it sounds like it won't be a Splinter Cell rip-off like the Batman Begins game was.

That was one of my favorite movies ever. I was on the edge of my seat for about 75% of the movie. The only things I didn't like about the movie were:

1) The sonar cellphone thing
2) The whole sequence where the people on the ferry were voting
3) Gordon has a daughter, but she is too young to be a Batgirl in any of these movies
4) Gyllanhaal looked really old in this movie
5) Joker at the end had dogs attack Batman. It would have been perfect if he used hyenas instead

A few questions:

1)
How did the Joker know Batman loved Rachael? I don't think he knew Batmans identity. Did he just get that because Batman saved her at the party?

2)
How did Batman survive the fall when he saved Rachael at that party? I didn't really see that scene clearly as someone in front of me got up during that part. I didn't see a parachute or anything, so how did he survive?

I think that the Joker
tricked Batman. He clearly said he was going for Rachel. As the Joker said 'he's one step ahead of the curb', so he switched the addresses in an attempt to ruin Dent's life, which would lead to his downfall, and it did.

Hyenas? This movie is supposed to be realistic, you know. Not to mention hyenas are cowardly animals.

1) He mainly chose Rachel to ruin Dent. Either Dent died, or Rachel died and destroyed who Dent was in the process.

2) He landed on his back on a car. Must have hurt, but he was alright.

All you overly sensitive nancy-boys and your spoiler tags should stop trying to protect the vapor-brained idiots who skim Dark Knight threads and don't expect to read spoilers. Any asshole who reads 25 pages of a movie thread and doesn't want to read about any plotlines can kiss my sweaty, bare naked ballsack.

And furthermore, I purposely didn't read this thread because I wanted my opinion to be pure as wind driven snow when seeing this film. All I HAD heard about were the pre-oscar bandwagon of Leger's death performance and virtual award ceremony 8 months early. All I brought with me into the theater was that, disappointment from the historical offerings, and usual low quality and low expectations of sequels of any kind.

What I left with was a gaping mouth and incredulity that a film based on a comic book/cartoon/TV series could be so well scripted, so well delivered, and so well written. I'm still beside myself with disbelief that I actually just saw a Batman movie and suffered no moment of embarrassment while viewing it. Then I rode the Heath Ledger bus home.

Why so serious?
What? no.

Deathstroke is a serious Badass. Deadpool is the complete opposite ( A serious Whackjob). Only reason theyre lumped together's because of either the name Wade/slade wilson and the costume.
Technically Deadpool was like a parody of Deathstroke, they're their own characters in their own right but Deadpool was clearly created as an homage of sorts.

It bugged me a bit that the sonar scene at the end reminded me of Daredevil, but it was awesome how they found a way to integrate Batman's eyes not showing in the comics. The part where Joker blind slided him was sort of dumb, you'd think he'd turn off the sonar vision after being on the same floor as Joker.

Also Deebo from Friday/Next Friday tossing out the bomb trigger was hilarious.

So you think it's unreasonable to be using spoiler tags for a movie that hasn't even finished it's opening weekend, and is selling out shows left and right? Not to mention, people have to work, and have other plans, and can't rush right out to see a movie right away.

You're right, anyone who's afraid of spoilers shouldn't be in the thread, but it's common courtesy as well as common practice on CAG.

And you're definitely
not a Lost fan :)

If anyone couldn't hear Batman saying he was going for Rachel, then either you're deaf or saw the film at a theater with a really crappy sound system. I don't care if it's hard to tell with the weird bat voice, he clearly said Rachel.

my memory is like this, start SPOILER:

batman hears the two addresses, he relays them to gordon (unseen, would be inferred), and then when gordon asks him who he's going for, batman says " Go for Rachel" and then gordon is like "alright blah blah". he clearly says "Rachel", i remember that for sure

i also remember batman did not look surprised when he saw dent, the shot was exposing the closed door and you see dent, so possibly that indicates trickery, but i didn't feel that overtly

I don't understand the confusion, even if you didn't hear what growly-voice man yelled at Gordon.

They explained it at the end... Joker, ultimately, knew that if Dent 'fell', it would throw Gotham into chaos, since he was the white knight. He knew that losing Rachel (especially in that way) would trigger it, and he was smart enough to pick up on how quickly Bats jumped out of the window after Rachel at the party. It wasn't just a 'saving the citizen' kind of thing... it was immediate, he didn't even think about it. Also, he jumped while leaving an entire room of innocent guests with a fucking lunatic. So, he picked up on it.

Joker needed Dent to live, and to lose Rachel. He knew Bats would go after her instead of Dent, so he switched addresses to ensure that Bats would save Dent instead. The gamble, assumably, was that Dent was close enough to get to, and Rachel was never going to be, especially if it was the cops going there, NOT Bats. Either that, or he knew that Bats WOULD make it to wherever he sent him. Doesn't matter either way... the point is that Joker MADE it so Bats went after Dent and that Rachel died, thus ensuring Dent's fall. No confusion... that was his plan, the entire time.

... one of the things that I enjoyed so much about the film was that nearly EVERY question I've seen posed online was actually answered throughout the course of the film. Really, the answers were there... and even if not definitive, there's enough evidence to support EITHER side well (like the is/isn't he dead thing with Dent).

I've seen the movie twice and both times I heard:

Gordon says "who are you going for?"

Batman says "Rachel!"

I do believe the Joker tricks Batman. During the interrogation Joker does get a rise out of Batman when he mentions Rachel and realizes he has feelings for her. For whatever reason they don't make it apparent with a musical queue or any hint from Batman himself that he was tricked when he walks in and finds Dent. Joker tricking Batman serves the dual purpose of hurting Dent (since Joker knew that only Batman could get there in-time to save either of them) and killing someone that Batman obviously cared about.

Just what I infer from what happened, of course.

Batman says he's going for Rachael. As he leaves, Gordon says that they'll take care of Dent.

Seriously, everyone stop fucking arguing, Joker tricked him into saving the wrong person.

Amen, case closed, go see it again if you are still thinking otherwise.

There is a rumor going around that the next Batman movie villain could be
The Riddler
.

The rumor is that Mr. Reese will be the Riddler. Mr. Reese = Mysteries. I guess its not a big deal if they change his name from E.Nygma to Mr. Reese
I thought the fact that he put-on make-up all the time just furthered the point that he was a complete nut.
FTW! Finally someone who agrees with me.

I saw it twice yesterday, once in IMax and once on a standard screen. To end the fight..

Joker tells Batman the locations of Dent and Rachel. Gordon asks who he's going for. Batman says "RACHEL!". Gordon says they'll take care of Dent. When he arrives, he realizes that the joker tricked him into saving Dent. Similar to the way he made the clowns the hostages and vice versa towards the end.

I think the Joker was more into killing Rachel to see the downward spiral it would put Dent in. He had the whole thing planned from the beginning.

Also, did anyone catch the hint at another villain? It was very subtle, maybe it wasn't a hint at all..

When Alfred was showing Bruce the new armor, Bruce asked if it'll protect against dogs. He said something to the effect of 'Maybe not a big dog.. It'll protect against cats."

..you know, Catwoman.

...Anyone want to see a magic trick? :D

I'm fairly certain that was the best part of the whole damn movie.
I'm fairly certain that was the best part of the whole damn movie.
No. The best part was the bat pod wall flip.

Didn't like the pod wall flip. I didn't think it looked all that well. The magic trick was pure Joker and was the best part of the movie. As for the next villain it was said after Ledgers death
that due to his death they would just jump from another movie with the joker to Two Face. One of the plans was to have 2 movies with The Joker then one with Two Face. Now they will just jump into the story with Two Face and that character will get more time due to the death of Ledger. So in the next movie it will chances are be Two Face. However The Riddler could be good as long as they don't cast Jim Carry for it. I think it is to soon for Catwoman. Maybe in the fourth movie.

No way they will
have the next movie focus purely on Two-Face. I don't think that would be a good decision.

I still want Talia in the next film and perhaps Ra's can come back as well. She would be a perfect love interest for Bruce Wayne
and we need one now that Rachel is dead
.

That is what was said in an interview. It was on comics2film.com but I don't remember when.
It was the plan all along but now will just happen sooner then it would have. Also for the people still wondering who he said he was going after I'm sure that in the next week or so imsdb.com will have the script and you will be able to read who Batman was going after.

Also I still think that if they can get someone that can play the part as well as ledger and can have close to the same look they can still have The Joker.
Amen, case closed, go see it again if you are still thinking otherwise.
i'm watching it again tonight; i'll have a definitive answer since i'll be listening intently at that exact moment

and i thought the batpod flip looked very fake, but still kind of cool

A friend and I were talking about Catwoman, and I brought up how it would be interesting to see how he goes into another relationship, after what happened to Rachel. Kind of being torn by his feelings, and his fear of another loved one dying.

Saw this today and absolutely loved it. Definitely the best comic/superhero movie I've seen. Ledger was brilliant as the Joker (lived up to all the hype). Loved the dark tone of the movie, great action scenes with a good story. Best movie I've seen in a while.

I still like Begins more then this though. TDK had me on the edge of my seat for pretty much the whole movie, but the star was the Joker and not Batman/Bruce. Begins was perfect because it was actually a movie focused on Batman.

I just got back from seeing TDK and it was the awesome.

Just chiming in here that The Joker definately tricked batman into saving Dent.

Also, my favorite scene in the entire movie was the Hospital scene, especially when The Joker is walking away as the building is exploding. However, the Magic Trick scene is pretty good also.

What a great movie. I want to see it again on DVD before I make my decision, but it may be my favorite super hero movie of all time.

Plus the Watchmen trailer looked amazing on the big screen.

I also just got back from seeing it and you're definitely right, I'm not sure how people are getting it wrong.
As soon as Batman walked in and saw Dent I knew the Joker had tricked him. Plus Batman definitely said he was going for Rachel.

I'll concede the point. Asking a couple friends who did get to see it twice they both said the same thing. I'm just sort of distrustful of reading it on here because the first people saying that he says Rachael didn't appear to me to be really that sure of it and it's only now that we're seeing people who've seen it again and were looking for it more that it's definite. I saw it at a midnight showing in a near full theater and so the movie's sound had to compete with some of the audience, so I wasn't able to properly make out what was said. It's not like it's out on DVD yet so I can't just jump to the scene and instantly be able to tell.

LOL, my boyfriend said the same thing, about how the movie was basically about Batman getting owned by the Joker for pretty much the whole movie. However, Christian Bale was nothing more than serviceable as Batman. Having the movie focused on The Joker, one of the best performances EVER in film, was brilliant. Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine also turned in excellent performances, and Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart also did very well. The movie was saved by the absolutely amazing supporting cast and the fact that Bale barely talked the whole movie.

Heath Ledger's Joker is the best performance I've ever seen in a movie, ever. Such a terrible shame that he died. It more than lived up to the hype.

I loved all the stuff you guys liked.

I did have one huge gripe:
It seems they forgot about Batman. He really didn't do much. He rode his car for a few minutes, broke it. Rode his pod around, crashed it. Had gordon save him. Punched a few dogs. Got police caught in ropes. Kind of played out as a whimp. Especially being contrasted with the joker, he was nothing. And he has all the cool gadgets and we barely got to see them in action, even batman himself! I think he forgot his martial arts training and now just punches faces, that seemed to be his extent.

Speaking of action to me it was missing that key action scene that supported the movie. It had a few that started but ended to soon. The first film had the great car chases scene that showed off the Tumbler and really gave you a memorable check point in the film.

What happened to Michael Caine and Morgan freeman's characters? Did they only have them for an afternoon to shoot? They barely where there. They are amazing solid actors and they where ignored.

I just felt they forgot about making us re care about batman and who he is all over again.

Joker was one of the most evil villains I can think of in film. Amazing performance.

Indeed to all your points. I didn't really care that Batman was hardly "in" the movie though, considering the story was fairly solid and most of the other acting was amazing.

Caine and Freeman's performances/screen time were just fine. They played the parts more than they were ment to. Look at the other actor who played Alfred in the first 4 batman films. He was barely in it as well.
Alfred gave some really good advice this time around.

Like I said before this movie was about making hard choices and sacrifices. Every major player had to do it and even the minor players.

If anyone remembers the Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker it was said the Joker tainted them all that night. It was a nod to that movie I believe.

It also made me think that Joker, despite what he did did may not have been the true villain. He had a goal and took things to the extreme to complete it. He did it to change Harvey, Gordon and Batman.

I am glad the writers kept Joker's antics to a minimum. Glad there was no laughing gas or acid or whatever.

Surprised the Joker had no way of IDing him. No records of fingerprints, DNA or whatever.

There is one thing i was trying to remember, but for the lfie of me i can't. Did anyone catch what actually happened to

I tried thinking back to the scene featuring him, but all i can remember is him getting away.
