Battle Mode on SMB3 on the VC?

How do you select the battle mode on SMB3 on the VC? I've only had SMB3 on Super Mario All-Stars, and I think it was just an option on there...

I believe a player has to go on top of the other player and press a button and it will take you to battle mode.
