Was shopping the bluray section of the Cape Girardeau, MO Best Buy store when a BB Mobile employee walked over and asked me how much Super 8 was on Bluray. I told him the price ($7.99) and he kind of makes a face and then says:

If you let me check to see if your cellphone is available for an upgrade, regardless of the outcome, I'll give you a coupon for $5 off any bluray $9.99 and up.

It took about a minute and all he needed was my phone number and the last 4 of the account holders social. Boom, hands me a coupon. Says it works on regular and sale price items.

Walked over and grabbed Clockwork Orange Anniversary for $9.99, got it for $4.99 (mismarked).

Probably ymmv, but at least it's better than getting asked if I'd like to purchase DirecTV.... I'd already waved that guy off.

That's not a half bad deal.

I wish my local Walmart would get rid of the guy in the electronics department asking who your cable/satellite provider is....he practically stalks people around the department.

hmmm...did he give you an upgrade and save coupon or something else? Sounds like he might have given you a free upgrade and save coupon just so he can look at your account......I don't like that...it's like one of those "Free Soda" deals when you fill out a credit application. I would check you account whenever you get a chance to make sure he didn't fuck with your account.

I didn't even think about it, though I doubt they'd dick with the account... It's not like they get the money for jacking up my bill. But maybe they could activate some burner phones on it...

Here is the wordage on the coupon (from DVD talk forum):

Also, you can get a $5 coupon toward any Blu-ray movie, TV or music $9.99 and up when you check for upgrade eligibility on your mobile phone with a Mobile Phone Specialist. See a Mobile Phone Specialist for upgrade check. You do not need to be eligible for a phone upgrade in order to receive $5 coupon. Markdowns taken from original or promotional price. Limit one upgrade check/coupon per person. Not valid with any other discount or package or on No-Contract phones. Valid only on in-stock Blu-ray movies, TV or music available in store. Limit one coupon per each Blu-ray purchase. Offer not available in Best Buy Mobile specialty stores or on BestBuy.com. Best Buy employees ineligible for upgrade check coupon. No cash value.

hmm... since most employees at my store are clueless, it's not worth it because they probably won't know about the promo OR think you are talking about the trade in dvd program.

They offer to check phone upgrades because their manager may have given them a quota. A friend of mine got a job at BestBuy mobile in a store and he told me his manager gave him a certain number of customers have to be checked per hour for potential sales. It seems make the most sense for this promo as well.

This happened to me today but I declined because I didn't know what kind of personal info he wanted. I'm picking up another order at best buy tomorrow. Does anyone know what kind of personal info is required, and what kind of access to your account or cellphone information best buy gets?

If he only wants to know the model of my phone or something relatively benign, I guess I would accept the next time I'm asked.

Phone number, billing zip, last 4 of account holders social security number.
They tried doing that with me but I don't have a cellphone, they gave me a coupon anyway.
Bet you he's gonna get ripped for not getting you a cell phone anyways.

Wow. And I thought I was lousy at my job... That guy needs transferred to my store...

What does the coupon look like?

I saw a small glossy card in my store with a UPC but it looks more like a promo for the deal than the actual coupon: it says "Check for a phone upgrade and save $5 on any Blu-Ray Movie $9.99 and up." The small print is the same as quoted below.

I find it weird that the coupon itself would say "Also, you can get a $5 coupon" - but then again this is Best Buy we're talking about.
