I know that Beltran could be good for the Cubs, but if getting him means getting rid of Sosa, then I'd rather do without Beltran.
I wouldn't be very upset if Beltran goes to the Mets. I'm glad that he didn't go with the Astros, because I'm a lifelong Cubs fan and the Astros are in the same division. Anyway, Beltran wouldn't make much of a difference with the Mets. They need a lot more good players in order to make a difference. They only have a handful of good, solid players at the moment, and one more (no matter how good) won't make a dent.
I guess it all comes down to this for Beltran: make a few more million, and go with a team not likely to make the playoffs (Mets), or make a few less million, and have a chance at the post-season (Cubs). That, or he could end up anywhere else, for all we know.
Back to Sosa... I just feel like he's the last link left in the Cubs... the Cubs that I love. It's very difficult to explain... I remember growing up and cheering for my favorite Cubbies like Sandberg, Grace, Dawson, and Sosa. Dawson retired... and then so did Sandberg (even though he did come back, and thankfully, I was lucky enough to see him play in person during his final, special season). I was heartbroken when the Cubs didn't sign Grace (one of my all-time favorites) again a few years back. However, I am happy that he did get to win a World Series, though (but I'll always remember him as a Cub forever).
So, you see... to me, Sosa means a lot to me. If the Cubs drop him, I don't know how I'll feel. The Cubs might just seem like just another team that hasn't made the World Series in a long time. I know I'll still be a Cubs fan, but the magic won't be as... well, magical. Sosa represents the fans in a way: he has gone out and played year after year, even when the team didn't do well. I believe that he should be in a Cubs uniform until he retires. If only he could make amends with those he was trouble with. If it's his ability that is being questioned, Sosa still has what it takes. He just needs to stop swinging for the fences every single at-bat. Back in 2001, he was more of a complete hitter. He would go for singles and doubles, hit the ball to the other field, you name it... that year, he hit (not sure if these numbers are exact) about .328, 64 HR, 160 RBI if I recall.
Anyway, overall... GO CUBBIES!
