I don't know much about Linux but do you guys think it's worth it to download Linux?

Could ya guys list the Pros & Cons of it? Thx ^_^

(I have the PS3 Phat so I can DL it).

Well Linux is just a free operating system. If you don't know how to use it, I would say to forgo installing it because it will take up more hd space. If you want to try it out, and I certainly encourage you to do so, find an old PC, download and burn a Linux ISO to a CD, and then install it on the old PC. That or you can download and burn a Live ISO and just run it on the PC without installing it.

Linux is cool but you need to know how to navigate through it. Otherwise it will seem boring and pointless.

It's free, it's pretty damn fast and the sky is the limit as long as you know how to code.

The cons? It's hard to learn, it's not user friendly, until recently it was ugly as sin, linux power users are annoying, it doesn't support major software releases, etc.

It's great fun as a backup OS but it's hard to recommend it as a primary.

In my experience of playing with ps3 linux, it was really not worth the effort i spent getting it to work.

It ran very slow, shoddy driver support (bluetooth) and was really more of a 'lets see if this works, and then never use it again' situation.

Now ubuntu runs fabulously on my pc, but it is really not that great on the ps3.

I am sure there was ways of getting better driver support, but the actual performance was just not what i was expecting. Had the ps3 allowed full use of the CPU and RAM, then it may have been useful, but it just really didn't feel worthwhile.

Another thing to remember is that linux for PS3 runs on the power PC architecture not the x86, meaning that there is even less software than normal that will work for it.
Last I checked you can stream pc games via your PS3 with Linux installed.
That sounds interesting but I don't think it is possible.

Anyway I have heard you can use some Emulators with the Linus installed on PS3.

I've heard of people getting it to run beautifully on the PS3 - playing PAL movies, emulators, using firefox as a better browser, etc.

I spent about 3 weeks trying to set it up, being unfamiliar with Linux, I found it to be slightly frustrating. I simply could not get it to work smoothly. I could get my controller to work great but then emulators wouldn't run properly, when the emulators finally worked well (with no sound) my controller mysteriously stopped working. As powerful as my PC was, StreamMyGame was extremely laggy for me (my PC is about 10 feet away from my TV so I was trying it for novelty really.) The browser ran well though, but again, I have a computer 10 feet away and linux takes about 3-5 minutes to startup.

It did come in handy when my PC died and I was waiting on a Windows XP disc. But other than that, I haven't touched it in over 6 months and eventually uninstalled it.

It sounds like fun if you're into those technical stuff. I don't mind trying Linux out (i got the PS3 phat, hahahaha), but i don't have that kind of time :(

It's worth it to download it, just keep your expectations low and be prepared for a learning curve.

PS3 Linux is a great tool for learning how Linux works, especially if you only have one primary PC and are afraid to install a second operating system on it because of potential data loss issues.

After you backup your PS3 game data using the backup utility on the XMB, repartition your hard drive, and reinstall the data from your backup, you can install different distros and play around in root without worry of deleting anything on the PS3 partition of the hard drive.

Then you can take what you learned and apply it to a PC where it works better. PS3 Linux is the reason why I don't use Windows any more. :bouncy:

^^^Agree. Your time could be better spent installing Linux on an older PC than on your PS3.

Like it was stated, grab an old PC and learn the in and outs of Linux.

Once you do that (and you think you're pretty good), go get Certified then go out into the world and make some serious income. Lots of companies use Linux, however (believe it or not) not a lot of people are qualified (or have the certification to prove it).

You're right some (not all) Linux Power Users are self centered, egotistical Know-It-Alls as that Douche named "The Situation".:)
