A year (nearly) gone by, and we've probably missed more good music than we'd like. With that in mind, it's time to find out what we should all be catching up on in the new year.

It's a simple game, really. Post your favorite album or albums of this past year and give us all a quick blurb. Then we can all run out to the record store and stock up on tunes with our Christmas money.

I'll start it off with a favorite from early in the year:
c1205380756.jpg

Lightspeed Champion - Falling off the Lavender Bridge

It doesn't fit neatly into any categories, but it's a fantastically melodic blend of folk, rock, pop, and whatever else happened to stop by for a cup of tea. If anyone can find a way to not enjoy listening to "Galaxy of the Lost," they'll have officially proven they have no soul.

I only bought one album this year, so it automatically wins for me.

Blooddrunk. Children of Bodom.

IMO the worst COB album released so far. A move away from melodic catchy tunes except for one, towards a more thrashy sound. Still, worst COB album is like saying I only found 10$ on the ground instead of 100$.

My choices entered to a certain site and in no order:

1. The Roots - Rising Down
2. Metaform - Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
3. Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
4. Eliot Lipp - The Outside
5. Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
6. Portishead - Third
7. Erykah Badu - New Amerykah, Vol. 1: Fourth World War
8. Boris - Smile
9. Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind
10. Shearwater - Rook

Black Milk, Q-Tip, and TV on the Radio all deserve recognition, too, as well as Delta Spirit.

This one is on my playlist right now, pretty good. Can check out samples on ze amazon(though i found them on emusic.com)

Eye Alaska - Yellow and Elephant
I really liked the new Portishead. :0)

...and the new Beck too.
I need to listen to that Beck album a few more times for sure.

haven't made out my list yet but my top 3 albums are

Baby Charles - Baby Charles
Metaform - Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants
Muph & Plutonic - ....And Tomorrow Came

Delta Spirit - Ode to Sunshine
Portishead - Third
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
Elbow - Thr Seldom Seen Kid

That's all I can think of for now, there's probably a few I missed.

There seems to have been more shit released this year than normal, or maybe that is just the case I never paid close attention to it. Most of what I heard this year I didn't like. Some notables nonetheless:

The Killers - Day and Age (my favourite)
Flogging Molly - Float (I can't say how much I love this band and everything they write)
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip/Ghosts (Two of the best albums of the year. He's amazing and brilliant. I love how he gave out The Slip. I went out and purchased it just for that. Great album. Probably my second favorite "recent" album of his after Year Zero.)
hmmm...can't really think of much else. Maybe someone will post something and it'll spark a memory.

Have to think about this more before committing to a final list, but here's a batch off the top of my head:

IAMX - The Alternative
Amanda Palmer - Who Killed Amanda Palmer?
The Cure - 4:13 Dream
OhGr - Devils in My Details
Mindless Self Indulgence - If
Airborne Toxic Event - Airborne Toxic Event
Ladytron - Velocifero
The Faint - Fasciinatiion
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Murder by Death - Red of Tooth and Claw

I reserve the right to come back and edit this after a more careful perusal of my music collection.

Will there be a "Worst of 2008" thread, as well? ;)
Radiohead was last year.
Well, the physical CD actually hit stores on January 1, 2008.
Vampire Weekend

It's a really good pop album. Catchy songs and upbeat.
Although a different sound, I highly suggest The Rural Alberta Advantage and their album Hometowns. Although two distinctly different sounds, fans of one band tend to like the other and vice versa.

Boris - Smile
Genghis Tron - Board Up The House (and the remix volumes)
Muga - There Is Nothing Eternal Exists
Suffocate For fuck Sake - Blazing Fires And Helicopters On The Frontpage Of The Newspaper. There´s A War Going On And I´m Marching In Heavy Boots
Star fucking Hipsters -Until We're Dead
Melvins - Nude With Boots
Dystopia - Dystopia
Have A Nice Life - Deathconciousness

Conor Oberst, Consolers of the Lonely, Elephant Shell and Evil Urges I guess ... can't really remember what came out.

It warms my heart that nobody has said Coldplay.

Manilla Road - "Voyager"
Unleashed - "Hammer Battalion"
Opeth - "Watershed"
Jeff Loomis - "Zero Order Phase"
Nas - "Untitled"

I actually enjoyed quite a few albums this year.

Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple
eMC: The Show
Atmosphere: When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
The Roots: Rising Down
Nine Inch Nails: The Slip
TV on the Radio: Dear Science
Heltah Skeltah: D.I.R.T.
Q-Tip: The Renaissance
EPMD: We Mean Business

Radiohead- In Rainbows
Coldplay- Viva la Vida
Counting Crows- Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings
Nine Inch Nails- The Slip

That's about it as I hardly bought anything this year, and none of those really blew me away. I'm just not into music nearly as much as a I used to be. Well I should say I'm not into researching and trying to dig up new stuff--seldom even listen to the radio. I still listen probably as much as I every did, just mainly to stuff I already own and just buying new albums by bands I've been into for years.

Hmm.

Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst
NIN - Ghosts I-IV (especially for the unconventional pricing/release)
-on a related note, The Slip was alright, but not best-of material

Haven't listened to them yet, but I'm sure the new Amanda Palmer and Murder by Death records belong on this list.

Otherwise it's been kind of a quiet year for new music that I get into. I wish I could put the new Alkaline Trio album on here, but... it wasn't very good. Might have to come back and edit this if I find something else.

1) Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy (seriously)
2) Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
3) modwheelmood - Pearls To Pigs Vol. 2 & 3
4) Dr. Dooom (AKA Kool Keith) - Dr. Dooom 2
5) Man Man - Rabbit Hands
6) Brian Wilson - That Lucky Old Sun
7) TV On The Radio - Dear Science
8) Paris - Acid Reflux
9) Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night
10) B.B King - One Kind Favor

I will release my full list soon, but Narrow Stairs will definitely be up there

That IAMX CD came out in 2006!... it was released this year as a re-release

Senses Fail - Life is not a Waiting Room
Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs
Murs - Murs for President
The Toadies - No Deliverance

I am gonna have to go with
Atmosphere - When life gives you Lemons (hip-hop)

Jamey Johnson - That Lonesome Song (country)

Guns N Roses - Chinese Democracy (mainstream rock)

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (indie)

single - Kanye West - Heartless (I just can't get the damn song out of my head)

my wife votes for

Katy Perry - One of the Boys

my kids vote for

Miley Cyrus followed by Kanye West - Heartless which they want to listen to on an endless loop every time we are in the car.
Have A Nice Life - Deathconciousness
Didn't realize that was released this year... hmm. Definitely one of the best albums of '08.
1) Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy (seriously)
I am glad I didn't have to be the first one to say it. I like this album more and more everytime I listen to it.

blackice_frontcover.jpg

And Metallica's "Death Magnetic"

I know its two high profile releases, but those were the only two albums I bought this year. Would have picked up Chinese Democracy, but I didnt care for it much aside from the title track.

Great choice.

The_D%C3%B8_-_A_Mouthful.jpg

I guess my choice is The Dø's A Mouthful.

After checking out one or two of the recommendations above, I firmly believe that whenever people post opinions about music, or games or whatever, they should post their age/sex. For the most part, I think a 15 year old would have slightly different likes and dislikes than myself, a 32 year old, and Im sure I probably like stuff that a 45 year old wouldnt etc...

What would age have to do with it? Its not really a recommendation thread anyway, but I'd want to be recommended music that sounds similar to music I already like, or in the same genre, not music from people who are the same age as me or older or younger or whatever.

You have a point. But age does have something to do with it.. how many adults do you know that listen to death metal?: point being, there are definitely some genres that are mostly listened to by people within certain age groups.

Its going to depend on the type of people you hang out with/share common interests with. If you don't like death metal, you probably won't find people that do because you try to avoid it. I do happen to like it, I am an adult, and have friends older, younger, and the same age as me who all enjoy death metal. Hell, even my father likes a couple of death metal bands. Like I said, just depends on your own interests and how actively you seek out or just find others with the same interest.

I agree with all of this. :applause:

I know...I've had it forever but I feel like it finally got noticed here in the States once Metropolis re-released it.
It was a technicality. ;)

While it isn't a recommendation thread, per se, in a way I am looking for new things to listen to, as I'm sure others are. Age does probably play some part, but if someone really likes something it might be worth checking out, regardless of age.

Also: There's a lot I've missed over the year! Glad I made the thread

Just remembered another album that I really love from this year.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
The band I would want on stage if I was opening a rock and roll bar. Listen to "Sequestered in Memphis" and weep at how good rock can be.

I've only purchased one album actually released this year, and that was Ayreon's new CD. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite as good as Arjen's previous stuff.

Lets see, this is stuff I loved this year, whether or not it actually came out this year. Actually, I think most of it didn't. I tend to be at least 6 months behind on music, so whatev. I mean, if I haven't heard it, its new to me!

In no particular order:

1. Beck - Modern Guilt
2. Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
3. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals
4. Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
5. Deltron - Deltron 3030 (yeah its like 10 years old, go buy it anyway)
6. Lovage - Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady by
