BEst Anti Virus/ Firewall?

Oh just stick with the windows firewall....it's amazing! NOT

For a free firewall, I use zonealarm, haven't had any problems whatsoever, and very easy to use. for an antivirus, I use AVG Free, also a good choice and easy to use.

If you're looking down the route of pay services, I'd say go with norton security center (i think it's called that). A few of my friends use it and like it a lot.

I have Norton Internet Security and its pretty easy to use, updates itself and is generally okay. There are some issue with web browsing that I have found. For example on this website, links sometimes don't show in the message boards, so you have to quote the person to get the link. Sometimes graphics don't show up on other sites and it can really mess up gmail (you get messages with no text, frequently).

Ad-Aware, SpyBoy, and SpySweeper are all good choices. Also, if money is no object, look into Trend Micro. They've got some good products.

Yes, as is Spybot- Search and Destroy. Microsoft's Anti-Spyware seems to be one of the more popular ones as well, but Giant's original product didn't seem better than Ad-Aware or S&D.

Also, Moxio, you shouldn't be running two anti-virus programs at once.

Antivirus- AVG (free edition), it's not too hard to use and works extremely well.
Firewall- Windows, works pretty good... no problems so far.
Spyware, etc.- AdAware & Spybot (both!) work great as one finds problems the other doesn't and vice versa.

Anti-virus, Norton, macfee there all the same they all get the info for virus from the same place
Firewall SOFTWARE NO NO NO!
D-link, Linksys

If anyone gets a software firewall, supplement it with a hardware one. Most modern routers have a built in firewall anyway. And, for those of you who get antivirus/firewalls by downloading (and I'm not talking about freeware/shareware), do you really want to trust any of those that have already been cracked? It just doesn't make sense to use a cracked antivirus as it's self-evident that it's already been defeated. So a virus is just waiting to sneak in. You're better off getting an official version. At the very least, you're qualified for legitimate upgrades and antivirus updates.

I don't. I keep AVG on and I use Avast for scanning.

For free Spyware/Adware utilities, I would recommend Adaware inconjuction to Spybot. That's probably the cheapest (after all it is free) and best combination out there. As a third option I would also recommend Spysweeper. It's my favorite, but you have to pay for it. I would also recommend using Spyblaster with any of the other spy utilties that you choose to take. It will basically block 98% of everything before it even has a chance to get on your comp.

For a firewall I'd recommend Zonealarm, either free or it's even worth paying for it. I did and it is my favorite.

For the free route on a sotware firewall, I'd have to recommend Kerio also. The 30 day trial basically sets it up for you that you will never have to worry about anything with it, and even after that, it is simple and easy to use and strong. Kerio paid version has a nice block ads tool in it, that it will automatically block ads like Google, etc. before you see them, but if you have Firefox and adblcok with the FiltersetG than you should be all set and have nothing to worry about.

And as of late, hardware firewalls have become all the rage. I simply do not see had it can be so. I don't have the best understanding of them, but I see that they are simply configured to block certain ports and items. nothing that great that I can't do with just my computer or my software firewall.

I have no clue as to how some people can recommend Norton anymore. The thing just isn't any good anymore. I mean, it's a good A/V program, but it is such a resource hog and is so bloated that it simply isn't worth it anymore. Same can be said about the firewall/internet security.

If you are willing to go the pay route again for A/V software, then I'd recommend Nod32. I used the trial of it, and absolutely loved it. I would pay for it, but I didn't have money at the time (and still don't) so I just went with AVG (free), which isn't as good, but it still gets the job done relatively well. Kaspersky from the trial was compareable to Nod32, as I loved it. I also here good things about Panda A/V.

As it's already been said, Norton is the best computer protection you can buy. It bogs down your system so much, you don't want to use it! How much safer can you get?

AVG coupled with a hardware router/firewall. SpyBot with the "tea timer" turned on for good measure. It takes about 5 MB of system resources, but with Norton taking all of them and ordering reinforcements from NewEgg.com, it's still minor.

I could tell you, but Security Now! (w/ Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson) had their last show on the same issue and Gibson really seems to know his stuff.

And to build on Rabbitt's post...

I recently installed the most recent version of AVG, and whenever I boot up Windows, it says "New Hardware Found - AVG7 Kernel" and "New Hardware Found - InstallDriver Table Manager."

Anyone else get this?

God dammit. I swear to god it is people like this that make me want to stab me in the face with my car keys.

I am a web developer, and I know what I'm talking about so listen to me good.

fuck software firewalls. fuck THEM IN THE ASS. You're going to completely gimp your internet connection if you use one of them. If you want some protection, go out and buy a router. They are very effective and the complete opposite of retarded. It'll close up any ports without stupid paranoia security settings and shit like that. The latest updates to Windows Firewall and Norton Internet Security totally fucked up our customers abilities to submit any forms that we built for them. These aren't special forms, either. They're standard HTML forms. They work for everyone else but people who have security software installed.

I know that came out harsh, but it's the truth. Security software is the bane of my (and the millions of other web devs) existence. Please just take $50 and buy a router.

Obviously nobody knows, or I'm sure they'd be glad to help you. Did you do the usual uninstall/reinstall bs? And make sure you go to Program Files and manually delete whatever may have been left behind after the uninstall.

You definitely need a router, I agree; however, software firewalls provide two very important functions. One, (for laptops mostly), it protects you when you are using your PC on a foreign network where other PC's sharing the LAN with you may be infected with god knows what, like at an internet cafe or WiFi hotspot. Two, (this is for everyone), it gives you control over which applications are allowed to access the network. This is helpful for spotting potential malware and preventing legitimate applications from "phoning home" for no good reason (like acrobat).

We agree in our dislike of all-encompassing security suites like Norton and Mcafee. Heaven forbid you have a problem with one of these monsters and need to uninstall it. You'll find that they've completely entwined themselves into your system. If they go wonky, you'll probably have to reinstall the whole OS from scratch. Stick with Zonealarm and AVG or Avast. They're pretty well behaved.

I uninstalled the components and they haven't reappeared since. AVG still works so I think I'm safe.
