Best Background Antimalware Program

Alright, as a gamer who does a lot of web surfing, I figure this is a question I should put to fellow gamers. I want something that can run in the background and not take up many system resources. I also want something that I can completely trust to keep my drive safe. What is the absolute BEST background anti-malware(virus, spyware, adware, etc) program out there? I'm sick of reinstalling XP every time i catch something particularly "resilient".

This being CheapAssGamer, free software is good software.

Thanks in advance.

surf smarter is a HUGE thing, don't go to sites that aren't trusted.

spybot is good.

spyware blaster? would be good... can't remember the name but thought that was one.

If you're going to surf bad sites, get like MS virtual PC and load up a linux distro... that way it won't ever affect your own pc.

most of the time, it's the user that screws up the pc...
Is spybot any good for surfing with IE?
Outside of immunization, spybot doesn't offer any real time protection. Try threatfire or spyware blaster for real time protection.
