Anyway, check out my thread. Paying for games gives me the creeps ;)
The best browser game is Quake Live hands down.
... If we're going to classify Quake Live as a "browser game", then I nominate Battlefield Heroes.

If we're talking about Flash-based, then I vote for Gemcraft as a Tower Defense, and anything by Boxhead Games for top-down survival/shooter.
I do, I guess installing a plug-in doesn't make it able to be played at like work though.

There is also Fallen Empire:Legions and Tribes on http://www.instantaction.com/
edit: when they fix the site that is...
Check out EVONY, TRIBAL WARS and TRAVIAN for really interesting, fun, MMORTS games.

They are all online, Evony even features global, alliance, private chat, etc.

I believe all of them have built in friends lists, and are full-featured RTS games similar to civilization and/or age of empires.

Evony is the prettiest, and has the most social features but is also the most criticized and controversial games due to its microtransaction model and controversial advertising campaign.

If you read about EVONY don't listen to the haters who say you have to play to be competitive...this is simply NOT TRUE. I play in a top alliance and have yet to come across a player who doesn't play completely for FREE.

Civilization is turn-based strategy not and real-time strategy.

I'm not a 'hater' of those games but there is a lot of downside you are not covering in recommending them to the OP.

I mean it's great the games are free but they come with a lot baggage and hassle in using them.

Kongregate remains to be my favorite Flash-game website. I felt the effects of achievement addiction.

Such as playing through some crappy Flash games just to get that one more achievement >_

Mega, I suppose you're right about not explaining the downsides...

I only started playing Evony and Tribal Wars a few weeks ago.

Both are major time sinks, with EVONY pushing towards ridiculous...

Its almost as if they tempt you with the game but really test your patience....then they dangle powerups in your face that cost a few dollars that can really speed things up. It's almost unfair.
