Best Buy PS3 HD 120 gig on clearance! Possible YMMV

Rounders55

CAGiversary!
I jsut came back from BB and I've been looking to get a cheap HD upgrade for my PS3 for a while. The fact that mine is a 20 gig makes me need a larger capacity one even more. I found a WD Scorpio notebook 120 gig HD for 57 bucks on clearance. There were only a few left. I think most 120 gigs online are around 70 bucks or so now plus shipping so this is a pretty good deal.

I just a similar thread on GAF, so is it possible to put in a 750 or 1GB HD on the PS3, as long as the RPM is the same and meets the specifications, right?? and you won't have problems, from what I've read??

Yes, any 2.5" sata drive will work (re: laptop-type drives).

I have read of people putting in 7200rpm drives with no problems. It will net you a small gain in loading speeds for games installed on the drive. It will increase the internal temperature of the PS3 to a certain extent, but seeing as the system has no problems with overheating, this does not seem like a worry.

The simplest way of swapping out drives is to backup your game saves onto a flash drive, then throwing them back on the drive. This, however, will mean you have to go back onto the PSN store and re-download all of your previously purchased/downloaded content. You would also have to re-install any games (Ridge Racer, Devil May Cry, etc) that go through an install process when you first play them.

Alternatively, if you have an external USB hard drive, you can back up all of your games/downloads/data on the external. After you swap in the new drive, you can then restore the data from the external to your new PS3 internal drive.

If I've made any errors in this summary, feel free to correct me.

Hope this helps.

Did you mean 1TB?

Actually yeah I meant that, but have another question for those who have the bigger HD with higher RPM?? Has your PS3 had any issues so far?? I know the loading times are slightly faster, but I'm worried in the long run of having heating problems inside the PS3.

Theoretically, but there are no 750GB or 1TB drives so it's a moot point. (Unless you wanted to have a cable coming out the side to an external drive I suppose.)
ahh..i heard this a while back (before the system came out i think on gizmodo or something) and have always thought that to be true......using 3rd party a/v cables still voids the warranty though, right?
how would Sony ever know... if you didn't use 1st party cables, how would they know that you used a 3rd party hard drive.. not that I think either voids the warranty, but if it did, they would never prove it... if my ps3 ever went to sony of course I'd send it in with the original hard drive (if necessary) and of course if Sony is going to come to my home to inspect my cables, I'd have 1st party cables ready for em.. but I doubt sony is coming to my house to inspect my ps3 hook up. [although i heard that they did in a online blog somewhere....]
In case anybody still cares.

When I did a backup of my original drive to an external HDD, it copied over all my games and demos.

I didn't have to redownload a thing.
I care, thanks Dallow. So what Daroga said is true? Games are downloaded to 5 different systems, not 5 different times?

Also, what do I do if I don't have an external HDD? Am I SOL?

I believe buying or borrowing an external HDD would be the answer, dude. Unless you have a flash drive and not many files to back up...
Can somebody explicitly state what types of hard drives are compatible with the PS3? I forget.
2.5" SATA HDDs. The warning I have is regarding the screws Sony uses to hold the hard drives in the removable tray. The screws are fairly cheap and can be tough to unscrew. Could wreck the tray itself if you're not careful.

Damn..I think my uncle has one though..

Picked up the 160GB at BB -- stripped a few screws, two came out perfectly, the other two stripped, had to get a pair of pliers. Seems to work though, thanks!
That seems like a good deal because I rather buy B&M than online; however, I'll probably just get a 250GB one at Newegg. I'll take a look though.
They had 250's in the store, 320's too.

I think 250 is the max for PS3 though, it uses FAT32.

Actually, i think the limit of a FAT32 system is something like 8TB. At least that's the number I got from Microsoft's site.

I haven't bought a PS3 yet, but will here down the line.

What size HDD would you guys recommend?

I am interested in running Linux, but will not buy a single movie, and do not need game demos. I would probably buy a moderate amount of games from the PSN. I just don't want to get anything too small or too large.

If you're not planning on storing videos, the 80GB SKU's hard drive would probably be more than enough for you. I'm pretty sure you can run Linux via Live CD on the PS3, so you wouldn't even have to install it to the hard drive.

If you do want a larger drive, it will probably all boil down to what the prices are at the particular moment you want to upgrade. If you can get a larger drive for cheap, go for it. If not, just about any size drive would honestly hold you over.

People tend to overestimate how fast computer storage space will fill up. The computer I'm on at the moment has a 250GB drive (so, really 232GB), There is over 100GB free, despite there being like 500 songs, dozens of games, and so much other crap stores on here.
Question what do u guys do with your old drives when u upgrade ?
Install it on a computer for extra storage or buy a case to make an external hard drive.

You may want to hang on to the original, if you ever need to sent it in to Sony, you need to put the original HDD in it.

And to the above poster, 16MB caches have slight performance advantages, and 7200RPM HDDs shorten game installs. They generate a little more heat than a 5400 but ps3 doesn't have heat problems anyway.
