Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Has anyone found out whether the 1 per title per year is retroactive or it started 4/1?

I traded stuff in today but the guy wasn't too friendly so I didn't bother asking.
I highly doubt it will be retroactive in the sense of banning...Best Buy does do things ass backwards though.

In terms of counting a game as "already been traded in", one of the non banned people will have to try it. Most of the non banned people haven't traded much, so there are probably not many opportunities to try it.

It seems that most people maximize trade limits, so there probably isn't a large group that can test the limit.

Someone brought it up previously and said he would ask his gamer rep on Sunday (yesterday.)

I am not talking about banning. I'm simply talking about a reported 1 per title per year that was reported by a handful of people. If the computer won't let you trade it in (say something pops up if you've already traded that game in), whether that is within the past year or whether it starts 4/1.

There are two ways to test this: 1) if the person who said he'd follow up did in fact follow up or 2) if someone has traded a game yesterday or today that they knew they've traded in before in the past year. Neither of which are so outside the realm of possibility as to render my question stupid.

Sit down.

The OP said a "minimum" of 40 percent extra trade in credit with a pre-order? What does that mean? Will i get 40 percent extra with any pre order? And i can cancel the pre order afterwards right?

I forgot to mention this, but I did ask the gaming guy this question and he said it's was suppose to be retroactive starting from January 1st this year. Meaning if you traded in 1 game for a specific console prior to April 1st you will not be able to trade it in again until 2013. This guy is pretty knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff, but the only way to know for sure is to have someone test it since BB doesn't seem to enforce some of their policies like the 3 per console rule.

Sure. Go ahead. I haven't traded with them before. It's nice of you to offer!:applause::D

I'm just curious...does the $20 Gift Card for Gamer's Unlocked Card for pre-ordering Max Payne 3 stack up with the 40% trade-in bonus?

Yes, it does.

FFXIII-2 finally dropped to $10. Booo!

I traded in two MW3 xbox 360 and one mw3 ps3 on April 1st using a b2g1 coupon from gamestop, so the system still lets you trade in as many copies if the employee is lenient.

Well, GS is having a B2G1 free sale on pre-owned games starting Wednesday so if you feel like buying MW3 again and attempting to trade it in let us know how that works out?

@scblueeyedguy
Okay, thanks =)

Okay, it's good to know that the system doesn't stop you from trading in more than one copy (it's not a hard limit) just like it didn't when the limit was 3. Still, the liklihood of eventual banning from breaking these new limits (1 per title/console, 50 max annually) will definitely keep me in check...

while i have no problem with the 3 per console rule- now 1 per console rule-, the 50 per yr rule will undoubtedly bite me in the ass. im pretty sure im already 3/4 the way there thanks to clearing out a good chunk of backlog. gonna have to pull a strait edge and do a spreadsheet or something to keep track and hope im not as close to 50 as i think.

I'm glad i don't trade into BB that often, 50 titles a year would go very fast. it's good to see them try to weed out flipping, but their trade in prices still won't raise any so i believe that no one will benefit here. The per title limit should be enough, but this is just another example of BB shooting itself in the foot and over reacting to something that it feels a threat. I guess all giant things do that when backed into a corner tho...

I surpassed that limit just in my last mega trade alone(54 unique titles), so unfortunately I'd be stuck for the rest of this year if they're going retroactively.:whistle2:#

The fuck? Where am I trolling you moron?

Has anyone verified that 50 per year even exists? The 1 per game was more widely reported.

lol thats too much dude. im not trying to make the girl doing trade ins hate me. shes rather quite nice/helpful- wouldn't wanna ruin it.

From what I've heard, the 1 per title rule already happened but the computer still says 3 per title some how, so people aren't enforcing them. 50 per year, I don't know.

I think the employees at both of my local stores that have done trades or other transactions for me just get a kick outta how many games I have when I come to trade in some stuff.

Not only that but I've become pretty chummy with a majority of them. The only time I think I had someone gripe about my trade was when it was a guy who was not the regular gaming rep and I think I disturbed his social hour with his co-workers to do a PS2 sports game hoard I brought in.:booty:

He kept asking all sorts of junior detective questions to me and in general being huffy/pissy because he had to do a big trade.

Otherwise the normal gaming reps usually stand around n bs with me about games/gaming and seem to be genuinely happy to see me stop in. The last time I went into my closest store the regular rep said he was glad I stopped in cuz it was pretty boring that day.

if thats the case then more power to u lol. im just glad im not the guy behind u in the trade in line..lol i'd be pissed.

So finally did my first BB game trade-in and...meh. The guy had to enter my information four or five times and generally did not seem like he knew what he was doing. I did get the full value for the game ($24 total for Super Mario 3D Land) but I didn't realize that this amount gets put on a GC and cannot be applied to a preorder beyond the $5 deposit. Guess they're hoping people will spend the GC before the game comes out.

You could order it online and do in store pick up. That's the only way to put down the full amount of that card (plus some of your own money) for a preorder at Best Buy. BBy won't take more than 5 bucks for a preorder.

Are you afraid o losing the gc? I don't see how his flexibility is a bad thing.

Thanks thats only because I too have incurred the wrath of the banhammer.

i came in the other day and some dude traded in $700 worth of games. 3 of each games that he got from his developer friends. The gaming girl said to me (after he left), he's getting banned soon. hahaha

Damn! Was this at union city best buy?

lol what a dummy. i get free games sometimes through work but consider trading any of those in as cause for bad karma.

Hilarious. Of course the developer comment is probably 100% lie to excuse flips.

yea it was at Union City. It was his first time trading in, I believe, because he didn't know about unlock until the girl told him to sign up. I actually do believe the games are from developer sent because it's all new (he's smart enough to take off the wrapper before hand hahaaha) and all recent released games.

All these talk about policy changes on 4/1. I'm wondering if BB allow those of us incurred the wrath of the banhammer to trade again. I am hoping for a reset.

do you remember any of the games?
50 per year limit?! Da fuq? Meh, I'm almost already there, I'd imagine. Lame :(
That's like one trade!

All my BB have such weak selections and they are getting thinner. You'd think they'd want more trades.???

Games traded in are sold right away. They are actually sent to another company and then sent back to other stores. They do want your trades regardless. Just probably taking awhile for that company to restock stores.

I can further confirm that the trade limit of 1 per title per console is in effect already at BB. But as the gaming rep at my closest store confirmed, the system STILL does not stop people from trading in 2-3. It's up to the gaming reps to take an e-learning course(must be their equivalent of the videos n quizzes we had to do when I worked for Wally World) to learn about the change to the trade program.

The gaming rep didn't mention anything about a 50 per year limit on games traded in though, so hopefully that's a myth and not another change since I can still likely find tons of unique titles to trade in for decent bank.

I ended up talking with two of the three gaming reps for about 40 minutes total before remembering why I was there(pick up my store-to-store order of :ps3:Dead Island). But it was nice talking to them as usual, since we usually just bs about anything and not always gaming or store related stuff.

so basically

- officially, you can only trade in 1 per title per platform this year.
- however, you can still skirt the rules because the computer doesn't keep track
- you might get banned if you do
- the 50 per year is still a rumor

Correct.

And do we know if this backtracks? For example does the 50 per year limit apply April 1st? or January 1st?

Glad at least it's not 1 title overall per all systems though...

Man Best Buy...

I mean, GS's official stance is one game per plat per year too and while I haven't found any GS's around here that let you do more per visit there are plenty of GS's that do (and even for the GS's around here, there are 'obvious' ways around it). I don't think this changes much: Those that had stores that were willing to take mountains of games everyday will continue to permit people to do so and those that that had stores stocked with Jr. Detectives will continue to question everything (making it hard to trade in more than 1/game/plat anyway -- it's just that this time they will finally be 'correct').

This may sound terrible... but if the rules have really gotten this bad, I may just go ahead and break them and skate by until they ban me.

I mean, I'm probably past 50 now anyway; so assuming this works retroactively to Jan 1, I can either stay within the rules and not trade from April - December, or I can keep trading in now until I get the ban hammer.

I figure there's a good shot that by January of next year...

-Best Buy could get out of the gaming trade altogether
-Values could plummet
-They could change the rules again, anyway
-They could switch trade-in companies again
-They could lift the rules

... so yeah; I'd rather enjoy the trades now and face a ban than wait around ~8 months not even knowing if it'll still be worth it when I'm free again.
