Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Anyone know how lenient they are in terms of scratches on discs? Like if theres a refurb fee or if they just don't take the game. I found a copy of MW3 360 for 8 bucks at a Goodwill that has a slight ring scratch around it, plays fine though. Was looking at trading it in will the double credit was still around. I figure they'd just end up buffing it at the warehouse as they do with most of their games.
Depends On who you get. I had a disk with dust on it and the guy argued with me over it. The very next game had some scratches he asked if it worked said yep he said ok. I put two games in the pile that were cracked and the guy didnt even notice.....

So I had the wife do a trade for me on 6/12 using my GCU. Everything went through fine, shows up on my Reward Zone account but the points are still pending. How long do the points from trades usually take to clear? A month as if they were from purchases? Thanks!

Yes its just like as if they were purchases. Which is stupid because you can't return trade ins.

Wow ass creed revelations is only worth 1$ at bestbuy lmao. Literally every ass creed game ever made ex for bloodlines and the 360 version of part 1 has a higher base value, why is that ? Do they have a ton of used copys in stock ?

Because it's free with Ghost Recon this week at BB.

Ok, I traded in games to Best Buy for the first time today. Waited 30 minutes cuz the one trade in guy was helping someone with something unrelated. About 10 workers walking around with nothing to do. Asked Customer Service and she knew how and taught the other guy. Took another 30 minutes for 5 games as it wasn't registering the double value and was messing up. My fave part had to be when I was told it was all set, they just needed me to hold the games and pose for a pic...and scan my fingerprint. I was expecting just needing to give them my license. So yeah that was interesting...and unnerving

Yeah, especially the holding games part.

My first time trading in with BB I had to get my picture taken. From now on every store (new for trades) just asks for my ID to scan
The one local pawn shop around here does the pic, fingerprint, ID and signature thing, even though I don't think it's really required.

But it may just be that that's what the local pawn shop laws in your area require.

geez, when I traded at BB a couple weeks ago all I had to do was show my license. Probably wouldnt have done it if fingerprints and pictures were needed

Most times it's just a thumbprint, not a full set of fingerprints like you're being booked. Although when I applied for a job at the one local casino here a couple of years ago that's what they did. It freaked me the hell out having to do that, but at the time I was kinda desperate for a job. But not desperate enough in the end to possibly work in the smoking section(all of PA is no smoking indoors now cept for "exceptions" like the f'n casinos:roll:).

They didn't ask for your signature?

Yeah the camera was built into the device that had the thumbprint scanner. They said it was in case you were stealing games to trade in and it got reported. But yeah, it was very weird. I shall be filling out the online survey in regards to that haha. Way overboard. But hey! At least next time they'll ONLY need my ID and signature!

Today at BestBuy it took forever to trade in a disk only copy of finally Fantasy XIII-2 Because apparently its in the system as XII-2 and the lady said they didn't take it. Well, I told her to check the SKUs and we got a more competent employ and 25 minutes later I traded in one game. This shit is why BB is going out of business, regular customers don't want to deal with that crap.

So I bought a bag of Doritos yesterday. One of the chips was broken. This is why Doritos is going out of business!

So if I buy $300 worth of kindle cards, would I get 300 rz points and count towards me unlocking an silver account? Sorry for the question cause I'm sure it's been asked tons of times.
It's whatever the local laws say. BB would rather not do it.
I'm wondering why the local Gamestop stores do not have to follow the same trade-in rules as Best Buy. Why do you have to get thumb printed, show your drivers license, etc. at Best Buy while trading something in but not at a Gamestop in the same shopping center? Wouldn't the local "pawn laws" apply to both stores since you're doing the same thing (trading in merchandise?)

Best Buy hasn't been doing well at all lately, your comparison to Doritos makes absolutely no sense.

Topic at hand, looking like I'm going to take a handful of old games and Madden 12 to essentially get Madden 13. I'll take it.

I went into Best Buy to trade some games towards getting Max Payne 3/Gamers Unlocked Membership and had a great outcome. First I used my $10 off any game $19.99 or more Gamestop coupon to buy MLB The Show(Vita) for around $16( original price was $27.99 and I new that I could flip it) and then walked over to Best Buy to trade that and Skyrim in. I asked the sales associate if I could trade the games in/purchase the Gamers Unlocked Membership and still get the extra 10% trade in credit on top of the 100%. He was like "yea I can make it work". Basically I wanted to purchase everything with the trade in credit and still get the extra 10%. So I ended up getting $24 for MLB The Show and $30 for Skyrim and he would just take the extra 10% percentage off the GU subscription and Max Payne 3. He took $5 off the GU subscription and even offered to price match Max Payne for $45(Amazon) but I already planned on using the $20 off Best Buy coupon. Total for Max Payne 3 and GU subscription was $52.38 and paid nada out of pocket. Buying MLB The Show may very well have been my last Gamestop purchase.

they probably do. the difference is gamestop exists on trade ins so they make damn sure they are compliance with any pawn shop laws or whatever. best buy does not exist because of trade ins and not all best buys even do trade ins. so for best buy this is a new and optional thing. gamestop uses trade ins as a source of existing and staying in business.

essentially if gamestop opens a new store they make sure they are in compliance with pawn shop laws before the store even opens. best buy doesnt.

i dont know what you are going on about exactly but maybe its state dependent? maybe some states dont think of gamestop as a pawn shop? i am from south carolina and there gamestop does not do thumb prints. but here in utah they have to because they are a pawn shop.

Gamestop is Pure trade ins. Not a consumer Electronics Store, It allows them to skirt by pawn laws because they aren't selling laptops, tv's and computers.

Just video games.

I'm not gonna say shit because you at least apologized for asking a question that was probably answered.

For the most part, they don't add to your RZ points, but around February when best buy turns over points, Almost everyone who just did trades, purchased kindle cards, and visa gift cards was upgraded to RZ Silver, myself included.

But for sure, if you pay cash then yes they should add to it. Giftcard to Kindle probably not.

It's more on the fact that any time somebody gets upset about Best Buy (usually from the dumbest thing ever), they always throw out the whole "going out of business" line to give them internet toughness or something. I just find it funny and to me, it makes about as much sense to add it to their post than mine (none). Sure they may not be doing so well lately, but there is more to it than something like that.

Also, I was also thinking about doing the Madden 13 deal. $20+10 eMoney is appealing, but idk...haven't had fun in a Madden game for awhile. New one looks more promsing.

Generally stores make up these restrictions and call them "local pawn laws" and then corporate shills act like it's just the companies following the law. I can go to 5 different game stops in the city of st. louis and some do prints and some do not. Both are in the same city/municipality and the ones with prints say "it's the local law" -- never mind that they are flat out lying, and the only difference is that one is next to the shitty grocery store and another is near the expensive grocery store.

I wont act like I know for sure, but wouldnt a possible explanation for these stores following different protocol be because a lot of our laws are so convoluted they could be interpreted differently? I would think the stores that require fingerprints and the like are being conservative and ensuring they arent breaking any laws. Meanwhile the stores that dont do the fingerprints are either breaking the law because they dont know or they think they have a different business type or interpretation of said law.

Meanwhile my thoughts are this...no store in their right mind would require their customers to give prints if they didnt feel they had to. No one wants to do more than they need to sell customers a product and fingerprinting in no way benefits any store as it costs more to have the equipment and it takes longer to get customers money from the sale/trade in/wahtever.

Around here it's the stores in the bad neighborhoods that do it. So you are probably somewhat right. If I had to guess, after a gamestop has a certain number of incidents with stolen games they can decide if they want to step up the security on trade ins, and so they decide to. It's just that in these areas, it's not "the law" (I'm not talking about people that live in cities where it is universally done) and I just generally have a problem with people telling me "the law" when they are full of it. Just say "hey we are in a crappy area and kept getting stolen games, so we do this to protect ourselves."

Although, I also happen to feel like the "stolen game" thing is kind of BS also, because while yes I believe that video games are stolen and traded in all the time, I have no idea how people think they are supposed to be able to tell the stolen games from non-stolen games, when there is no difference in the boxes/UPC/etc., for the games. It's not like every game has a unique VIN number type code on it. They are all fungible.

Going by this logic though, since GS has started to carry used iPads and iPods and some other select pre-owned electronics, then they should have to be held to the same standards as BB.

They took a semen sample at my store. I asked "Is the finger in the ass really necessary?" and the large man responded "YES!"

They took a sample of my nose hair. They said it was required to process the trade. It was like a scene from "Total Recall."

hes just following the law....yes this a sarcastic joke about the stupidity of some people justifying but i am just following the law.

yes, because every best buy employee really wants to take your fingerprints. that makes total sense.

ahhhhh it just occurred to me who you are! the whole fight the power thing gave it away.

Still not banned, and traded in 30 something games today, a couple of which were 3 ofs, and a lot of 2 ofs...

The two people helped each other process he transaction, all 4 of us (little lady, myself, and the two employees) joked throughout the entire process. The guy was even dancing and singing some annoying pop song that was on the radio in the next dept.

total was ~300 today on my new gift card.

Do they "price adjust" trade-in values? I mean, I traded Skyrim yesterday (for $30 store credit) and now I noticed on BB's site that it's going for $32. I know -- it's just a few bucks, but every cent helps these days.

nope. u signed away that right when u signed the trade in document .
