Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

You might get the same run around I did and be told that ou have to deal with it in store.

I did another trade the same night as the one that didn't get the extra 10% bonus and it went through just fine.

some people were reporting bans even with 2, based on high volumes. The rules seem to be inconsistent across the board

yeah but if you care about getting banned, i would be wary of trading in more than one unique title per system.

I emailed Mike from the BBY forums and explained what happened at the store. I'll post what happens when I hear something.

the only reason i transfer bb to amazon credit is cuz they had the free shipping/no tax/30% off diapers and wipes with amazon mom/subscribe and save. so then i play games, flip them and get diaper money. they lowered the savings from 30 to 20% but still better than buying diapers with cash. amazon also used to have good preorder bonuses like $20gc etc, but they seemed to stop that last year. but yeah i burn through bestbuy credit so much faster, especially just on games/flippables. hopefully the trade limit is 3, but iv been doing just one per game since april when reports came of bans. peace cag
you don't have a license and/or fingerprints?
I do (obviously) but apparently the best buy here won't take the game AT ALL. Unless I have a receipt from BBY.

is there any other BB's in your area? The one closest to me has the same pawn shop laws, but theres about 4 other ones in nearby towns which do not. Luckily for me, Ive noticed that I do most of my gaming purchases at BB now so I tend to have a reciept anyways

I'm sorry for being too lazy to answer this question.

I don't think this is actually in the OP (unless I missed it). IDK the answer though. When I went through the steps for an online trade it did not show any type of bonus, so I didn't follow through with it. You may get the 10%, but the 50% is in store only.

It may be covered in the second line of the OP, in bold red text...huge letters ;)

Trade in bonus good for any version of the game? Ie I wanted to buy the Borderlands 2 crypt edition for whatever the hell it is called for my son. Borderlands 2 is on the list but I wasn't sure if all versions or just the vanilla edition get the bonus. My guess would be all but I haven't traded in at best buy before

Right now, you get a 50% bonus for trading in any game. You don't even have to pre-order anything. But yes, for the pre-order bonus, you could pre-order the Special Edition/Collector's Edition/etc. and the bonus would still be applied to your trade-in...

NO WAY. THAT WAS JUST ADDED.

It definitely has not been up there for the last year that we've had the OP

It's been in the OP since at least 5/9. That's the last time the OP was updated.

May need to trade in Mass Effect 3 while this deal is still good. Can get $32 for it after all the bonuses...I'll just watch the Extended Cut DLC online whenever it comes out.
Anybody know of some good flips from GS to Best Buy? Trying to move credit over.
i'm wondering this myself.

So what exactly is a "hot title"?

I have Twisted metal here but I have no idea if qualifies as one..

Edit: NVM I found the link to these supposed "hot titles" and thankfully Twisted Metal is one of them but this raises another question. If I trade a "hot title" with another game that's not a "hot title" will the game that's not a "hot title" also get the bonus?

And don't worry Mack I've heard much worse :p

Well the clown guy's head is on fire so I'd assume it is a "hot title".

Ya ya, I'm terrible.

I wish the promos applied to online trade-ins, cuz usually even if you're banned in store you're not banned from online trades.;) Then again, if it did apply, I'm sure more than a few of the folks who're banned from BB trading in-store would've been RE-banned from online trades as well by now.:D

What do you mean banned. I'm just curious.

Doing alot of trading apparently. Or in my case(and that of many other CAG's probably) it was going right to the then limit of 3 per title per year on virtually EVERYTHING I traded in.

If I didn't max out everything I traded in, I might still be able to trade there.;)

I think it's time to dump a lot of my old collection while the values are still hot. No way they'll be worth much when the next consoles come out. Diablo 3 here I come.
Do BB trade-in require the box/manual?

I don't have the box/manual with me., but would like to take advantage of this promotion.
No, you'll be fine with just the disc.

Any CAGs veteran who got ban over at BB, please answer.

On Jan 1, 2012. I traded in game & got back $190+ with the 50% & 10% GCU offer.
On mar 26, 2012. I got $180 plus with the 60% bonus. I receive around $280+.

Do you think I might be ban this time around? Am trading in MW3 again & sum up all the games am trading in next week. The TiV is $145.00 (as of right now).

No. The people who've been banned are just vocal. I've been trading 3 of each since the summer of last year and still have not been banned. You'll be fine.

I get the impression that companies don't ban loyal customers i.e. those that do a lot of business with them. I think it is when you abuse the system somehow...

However, I can't speak for those that have been banned. Maybe some of them can tell their stories.

Unfortunately no one seems to know the trigger for the bans. Up till when I received the notice that I was banned, I had done a lot of things that others have speculated may bring about a ban.

I had bought games and then brought them right back in to trade in the same day, I had bought pre-paid Visas and I had bought probably closer to $1000 in Kindle cards(and usually in blocks of $300+).

As others who have been banned have stated though, contacting the company monitoring their system and effectively handing out the bans is fairly useless, which is why I haven't even bothered trying to dispute my ban at all. Why should I waste my time trying to reason with people who essentially are paid to just tell people you're banned and that's it and not even want to tell me what brought about the banning.

 Abuse the system? By sticking to the programs' clearly defined limit of three per title at the time(at BB)? By having managers' approval for trading in dupes(at GS)?

At GS, I did a pre-order virtually every time I did a large trade-in and a good portion of the time I picked them up and kept them. Aside from maybe $200-300 in credit that I sold to a guy from Craigslist, I spent every last dime in credit I had with them on stuff for either my friends, family or myself.

Not only that, but everything I traded in was in MINT condition(save for a handful of multi disc and SE versions of games that I gutted and traded in disc/cart only) and able to be resold for 2-3x what they paid me in credit on the spot without having to be refurbed like a good chunk of their shit condition stuff they take in.

So if anything, I could've resold those items I sold them for thousands in real cash and not had to wait for good promos or bonuses in order to get the most I could. But anyone who just trades in what they have without fully researching what they'll get and not waiting till they will get much more for it is a dumbass.

As I said, I can't speak for the people getting bans including you on what happened. I'm just saying it makes no business sense to ban people if Best Buy obviously want trade-ins and hence doing these aggressive promos. By far, they are giving the best trade-in values.

Maybe something you did, triggered it or maybe you weren't a profitable customer... You could very well be innocent, but it makes no sense to exclude profitable customers and we all know BB is hurting for it.

NOT SAYING YOU ARE LYING, but people on the internet don't always tell the entire story. There obviously is more to it, not only from your side, but BB's. Anyhow, just go somewhere else or just start a new account?

That's the thing though. Aside from Toys R' Us(and maybe FYE/SecondSpin/Wherehouse) my options are fairly limited since I'm also banned from Gamestop(for the above mentioned duplicates that had managers' approval).

As for my profitability, I did buy a bunch of stuff at BB with the credit including an HDtv on Black Friday. But I also definitely did 'cash out' a lot of credit into Kindle cards when I was doing tons of trades and I don't think I ever picked up any of the pre-orders that I put $5 down on to get the bonus bumps. I was viewing those $5 deposits as a small price to pay to get the bomus credit.

But usually places like Amazon had a decent promo around the release date of a game, whether it was a $10/$20 credit or $.99 release day shipping(and no tax;). Best Buy just couldn't compete by comparison.

Most of my trade-ins aside from my first 1-2 were strictly me flipping games I had bought cheaper elsewhere(copies of Resident Evil 5 Gold from GS during a B2G1, Blockbuster games during their 5/$25 sale) and taking them to BB because they were giving the most after promo and Gamer's Club 10% bump.
Don't bother discussing this with IATCG. He doesn't understand why businesses should be profitable instead of just catering to him.
That's the thing though. If BB markets their used games properly they could be on the same level as GS. But nine times outta ten those games will sit there till they're not even worth the amount BB is trying to get for them because they haven't advertised their used games(or game trade-in program) all that aggressively.

Compare that to GS, where more than likely most of the items I traded to them sold within a week or two of being traded in. Do I know that for a fact? No. But I did not see a single HDMI cable I traded in in any of the local stores within two weeks of trading them.

UPDATE: I received an email from Mike on the BBY forums. He added 91 points to my reward zone account. 26 points for the missed double points during the trade in, and 65 to cover the $1.30 difference that I didn't receive. Awesome! $20.80 from a free copy of Motorstorm Apocalypse isn't too shabby at all. ;)
