Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

I knew I should have traded in my copy of Uncharted 3 last week. BB just dropped the TIV to $5 and last week it was $9. I was going to trade it in for the 100% TIV. I was just going to go to Frys and price match BB for Uncharted 3 CE after I sold my SE. Oh well, still going to get the CE and I might as well keep my SE for anytime. Might just sell it on eBay.

EDIT: Actually I'm going to buy the CE and sell my SE on eBay with the online pass that will come with the CE. I already used my online code so it'll bump up the price. I could get a good $20 on eBay.

Considering MSRP for a new/sealed copy is $19.99 now, I would say that trading it at BB is likely your best prospect, since nobody will pay the full $20 for it when they could get a new copy for the same price.:)

BB TIV is now $5. I already checked on eBay and people are getting theirs sold for $20 w/ a online pass. I'm sure I'll get the same.

But there's no guarantee you will get the same. That's why even though I've lost money over selling on Amazon or eBay I've just viewed the smaller losses as a convenience charge for being able to get the money/credit right now.

Actually FYE and their stores would give you $12.50 cash money right now for UC3. If you use the 20% more cash coupon that's floating around the net and good till months' end, then you can bump that up to $15 a copy and not have to worry about shipping anything out or being scammed on eBay.

Then you could sell the online pass on eBay or on here for $5 and get that $20.
Buy it now only instead of auction on ebay = exactly what you want for a game. After they probe you with fees.
Feebay's fee extortion is far more than "probing" :ziplip:
Buy it now only instead of auction on ebay = exactly what you want for a game. After they probe you with fees.
Buy it Now for video games=13% Auction for video games=9% If you have top rated seller status those percentages drop to 11% and 8% So if you do a Buy It Now for $20 with standard seller status and free shipping your fees would be about $2.50+$2.00 shipping+about $.50 PayPal fee so $15 back to you. That's assuming everyone is indeed still paying $20 for it which makes no sense to me.

Exactly. The game dropped to $20 brand fuckin' new after Gamescom. Who in their right mind would pay for someones' used/open copy and pay retail for it when they could go to the store and get the same deal?

Although I suppose there are saps on eBay and Amazon who would pay ABOVE the current MSRP for an item and God bless them for being stupid. Otherwise I would've never sold BLOPS Prestige Editions or PSP Go's for above the $150 and $200 MSRP's with ease before.

I'm good. I've had to do this before with other games and I'm sure I'll be able to sell it for $15 - $20 + shipping cost. Shipping it is nothing too. Rather have that money too and not a BB gift card so it works out.

The money that I get from selling it on eBay will go towards UC3: CE and I'll really only be paying $10 for the game.

Much easier and less chances going on eBay.

Also, I only sell my stuff to people with good ratings on eBay so I don't get scammed. I've have been on the verge of being scammed but I saw the signs and made sure to not sell.

:lol:Alright man. If you say so. But note that I did say that FYE would give you $12.50 right now for UC3 and that's CASH guarandamnteed and if you use that 20% more coupon you're getting up to at least $15 and again it's guaranteed.

Good luck either way.;)

I'm also trying to sell my UC3 and would be happy to get $12.50 for it. I haven't heard of FYE before but how easy is it to trade in games with them and how do I get one of those 20% coupons? :)

Just Google the 20% coupon, as there should be some sort of scan or image of them available online. Have you ever heard of Coconuts or Sam Goody or Strawberry media stores? Same chain.

They're in a lot of malls and usually many of them will take game trades even if they no longer sell them themselves.

They're very heavily saturated in the eastern portion of the US according to the store locator map on their site.

Here's a store locator for them: http://www.fye.com/Store-Locator_stcVVcatId474286VVviewcat.htm

Yep, If I'm close to FYE when I go to Frys later on in the week, I'll see if I can. Either way I know I'll get over $15.

Might as well update the OP/title with the new expiration date(s), as the game trade in app indicates this bonus expires 12/28 as noted previously, and I specifically asked the trade in clerk today when the deal expires and according to his check of the system, it indicated "Oct. 6th". So we have at least until then and hopefully/possibly until after Christmas.

hey guys, quick question:

i have a lot of store credit at a local used games/electronics store, but their selection of games is usually pretty underwhelming. right now i'm trying to save up enough credit to get a vita, however they have very rarely had one in stock, and based on the condition i've seen for some of their other handhelds i wouldn't be shocked if it was scratched and nicked.
i've been thinking about maybe getting some games from there, and trading them at best buy; which games should i look for to give me the best trade in value?

considering we don't know what their underwhelming selection of games is I would figure out what they have and then use the trade in estimator in the OP, thats gonna be your best bet.

Skyrim is $16 base when I traded it in.

360 base values what i traded in today
The Witcher 2 -$13
X-men destiny-$5
Rage-$2
NHL 2k10-$4
Chronicles of Riddick-$3
Splinter cell conviction-$4

Every buyer on eBay has good ratings considering the fact that you can't leave buyers any feedback other than positive.

it varies, that's why i was asking which games would be good to look for in terms of average value to purchase and how much i'd get at bby.
Skyrim is $16 base when I traded it in.
hmmm. i'll look for that. even it's about $30+, i can almost even out.

looks to me like the games with good trade-in value are ncaa football 13 ($20), cod:mw3 ($15) and black ops ($12). ncaa b-ball 10 is still fetching $8/$7 (ps3/360). not bad for an old sports game.

i wonder why there's such a big disparity with battlefield 3; $12 for 360, $4 for ps3. that's crazy. sucks too, since i have the ps3 version.

probably because there is a coupon for bf3 (PS3 only) coming soon, so they're preparing for that or people have already started trading in their old PS3 copies and lowered the value.

Thank you, I'll try visiting one some time this week. I still can't find the dang coupon, though. What is it supposed to say, exactly?

What condition will they take by the way (does it have to have the case, manual, etc.)?

I live in northern Virginia and was just turned away at two Best Buys because I didn't have a Best Buy receipt with my trade-ins. The first store told me that the second store would take my games, I guess they were full of it. Has anyone else run into this? I guess I don't get to get in on the 100 percent trade-in since it is only online.

fuck you Best Buy

FYE stores typically require everything and for the games to be in mint condition.

Go here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17093&type=page

Use the drop down menu thing that says to find a store and look under where they say they take trade-ins. If it says you need a receipt, then that's what you need. The trade program goes by local pawn shop laws, it's not run like Gamestops' program. Some folks have been required to give a thumbprint or I think even have a pic of them snapped just to trade stuff in.

My stores aren't in that drop down but they show up elsewhere on the trade-in site. Oh well.

Why run a trade-in program that way?

Cause they dont know what the heck they are doing in relation to pawn laws in different localities. Here a pawn shop comes under a particular set of blue laws, like cant be open on Sunday or after 6 pm. Obviously best buy violates both. The "pawn license" is a class 3 license or so it is termed locally; I do not know if best buy has one or not, since they do not follow the guidelines. However, they do electronically submit all tradeins and your personal information to the local police department, which is another local pawn requirement.

In other words, they dont know what they are doing as evidenced by following some laws and not others. Gamestop, Toys R Us and all the other local trade in places do not do any of those things, so it is hard to just blame it all on "local pawn laws." It is best buy's incompetence or laziness or whatever that leads to their particular policies the best I can figure.

I have still yet to trade in-store but my online trade in was accepted. They emailed me an egiftcard instead of a physical card. So the theory that the bans initiated by corporate apply on a store level only is true (in all likelihood).

Here in Chicago they do not allow trade-ins if you did not buy them from Bestbuy and they do not have a used game section in store. The reason I was told was because they do not have a license to sell used games and they are working to get one. This was well over a year ago and they still don't sell used games which tells me bestbuy has no plans to get a license or they know business isn't going well enough to spend money on something that wont ROI.

When was the last time you sold something on EBay? Sellers are not allowed to leave any feedback other than positive for buyers. So how will buyers have bad feedback? What usually happens to me is I put a game up for a buy it now cheaper than any other seller anywhere and someone with a new fake account and a zero feedback score buys it. Obviously, the money never comes and while I'm disputing that for a week with ebay/paypal in a case I will ultimately win, other sellers have come in with the same game for a dollar or two more and sold theirs while my better deal was temporarily taken off the board. Maybe in that time the market has changed due to a sale somewhere and my game is now worth less.My theory is that those sellers create fake accounts to tie up sellers with better prices like me up so they can move up the board. The point of all this is that the 0 feedback buyers I'm talking about don't have zeroes from negative feedbacks-they're zeroes from no record at all. So there is no way to choose to not sell to buyers with bad feedback since it does not exist. Lame as hell but that is Ebay for you-they are all about the buyers. At this point I have mostly abandoned Ebay for that reason and just trade into GS and BB whenever they have promos

I can believe it, I have to admit that I'm pretty good at checking things out and this broadsided me. Of course, I was treated like I was an idiot during the whole deal, which was nice.

What he said is right. You cannot choose the buyer in any way. He can either tie up your product like the quoted post stated out, or if he has 0 feedback and pays your item you are obligated to ship the item or he can leave you neg feedback and get his money money easily. So in summary, there is absolutely no way for you to choose your buyer unless you do not care about negative feedback.

I work for a company that sells Industrial equipment on Ebay and we tend to get those costumers with account they just created, buy our stuff, and not pay for them. Then we have to wait a week after sending invoice before we can open a case of non-payment. We have a Cement Mixer that gets like that three times a year. Some just buy the item so they can see if they can resell it for more within that 1 week period.

While it may not prevent a person who makes an account the day they purchase your product you can set certain limitations on buyers. Some include:

Don't have a PayPal account
Have unpaid items recorded on their account
Have a primary shipping address in countries you don’t ship to
Have reportedly violated eBay policies
Have a Feedback score lower than the number you specify

I do not allow anyone with a neg. feedback, 2 unpaid items within 6 months or 4 policy violations within 6 months. I also require a Pay Pal account. Never really had any issues and never received any neg feedback for about 150 transactions over 8 years.

Because as I said above it depends on the local laws in effect for your area. Unfortunately BB didn't set up their chains' program like GS', so they have to adhere to whatever the prevailing laws are for that area.

You could try going a county over from you to see if maybe the laws are different there and you could trade your stuff in without a receipt required.

Most pawn shop laws include an exception for "specialty stores." The carve outs are meant to help used book stores, antique stores, art galleries and others that buy and re-sell (and, often, refurbish or refinish) discrete classes of goods. Because GameStop only deals in games, it usually falls into the exception.

Best Buy is a general retailer and subject to the full panoply of pawn and resale laws in most areas. There may be things they could do to make trade-in's easier and more widely available, but the only way to get the same ubiquity as GameStop would be to completely change their business model and open up Best Buy Game Centers or something similar.

Thanks Toss for posting that you had your ban lifted. My trading ban is over. I just got back from a successful trade after a 6-8 month ban. I was banned sometime between mid Dec and Feb.
