Get $20 trade-in Credit when you trade 4 or more games (Current gen games only (no PS2) and $5 minimum for each game). Offer valid 10/2/11 - 10/08/11**** This promo was cancelled early due to technical issues. There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, and some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a (United States) state issued ID or passport.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).
Relax.. I've been known to clear out a store every once in a while...oops. I'm just saying that i'm pretty sure that even though BB says they allow 3x per year, do sets of 3 like you did regularly and you will probably be flagged sooner or later.
Well yeah. This is the first time I've done 3 of the same game and luckily it wasn't at my local BB.

I'm sure my local BB wouldn't care either.

I probably shouldn't have traded the games still in its clear wrap either :bouncy:

Okay, thanks.

The games I have traded in have always been complete but I just bought an older Xbox 360 bundle on ebay and it comes with 14 games but two of them are disc only. Thanks again.

its not even about the best buy caring. Most of the people that got banned were probably store favorites, because they brought up the store pre-order and trade-in numbers tremendously.

Its just about whatever trigger in the system flags your account as displaying dealer, instead of consumer traits.

yeah my store says they love me cuz preorders and i always got them in the top with trade ins/etc. we joked about me getting banned and they could care less about my girl trading in when i am right there. so it is totally not the store itself or at least none of the managers/lp/csr/gamer people that i talked to that worked there. contrast that with the trade in ban at gamestop which is just store specific because they don't care for me, but i could drive 5 minutes down the street and trade in at a different store. and they won't let my girl trade in just through association with me. lol.

im gonna trade in madden for nba this week, cant handle two sports games at once.

Too bad i bought the download version of 2k12 cuz now im stuck with it forever

Does anyone know if you can trade in the regular version of battlefield 3 the website only lists the limited edition version?
Does anyone know if you can trade in the regular version of battlefield 3 the website only lists the limited edition version?
They are both 1 in same. Best Buy does not differentiate between those 2. So yes, you can trade in the regular and still get the same TIV.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with the individual Best Buy stores. I know I was a favorite at my local store; the guy working the door just stopped tagging my trade ins and they all knew me by name. They would often go out of their way to help me get a good deal and told me multiple times that despite being a "less busy" store they were consistently #1 in trade ins for the district almost entirely because of me. When I got banned the gaming manager actually wanted to try it again to see if it was a glitch, she was not happy and every time I came into the store after that she repeatedly would ask if I had managed to get my ban lifted.

My account was flagged for trading in simply too many games in too short of a time frame combined with trading in quite a few 3x copies of games. The system flagged me, someone looked it over and agreed.

Sorry if it's been asked but there are way too many pages to go through and review; but the BB TIV site, is that including the 100% bonus or will that be bumped up in store?
Yeah, it has nothing to do with the individual Best Buy stores. I know I was a favorite at my local store; the guy working the door just stopped tagging my trade ins and they all knew me by name. I won't be trading in much games unless I get a deal for doing so. The Kingdom Hearts 3DS deal was too good to pass up though. I usually don't trade in games unless I'm getting the games again (in a Collector's Edition) or I truly don't want the games anymore.

I doubt I'll be like you and trade in a bunch of games and multiples of the same copy.

Still, hope your ban gets lifted.

Have you tried trading since the systems were updated ?

Sweet, I know where I'm going tonight. Will gladly take 30$ for The Amazing Spiderman

Just traded in UC2, R&C:ACiT, LBP and The Fight. Netted me a copy of LBP Vita for nothing. This 100% bonus deal is awesome! Last week, traded R:BS, MK:Vita, and Starhawk + $4 for Borderlands 2.

I looked through a few pages, but can't find an answer.

Do you have to pre order something with the trade in, or can you just get credit? I'm only wanting to trade in 3 games and buy some vita accessories.

Got the ban again today. Not sure if they updated the new system with former people that were banned or what. I only traded in 15 games since the unbanning so Im guessing the system was updated.

And the name trick didnt work either, so that must be updated also.

What is the name trick? Do they ban the ID or the reward zone number?

If ID, you can use your passport. If rz number, then you will need to compromise on not getting 10% bonus.

It was by name in the original system, so you could have the employee add a letter to your last name if you were banned and the trade would go thru. Not sure what they are using now since that didnt work.

And... bby signs their own used game deathwarrant. It is amazing to me they have such a huge need for preowned games but give bans to their best traders and often times their best purchasing customers (even w/o tradein credit).

 Come on. Get real. They're not banning their best traders. They're banning their worst. Try to look at it objectively.

I would objectively say, it all depends on if they make money from traded games.
Well if he's not I am. 2 Copies of that plus 70 disk only PS2 games in GameStop sleeves
they take ps2 games

Yeah those 10000 copies of two worlds 2 were a real money maker.

Look, people who got the ban exploited the hell out of low cost games that got a high tiv that there was no way BB was gonna make money on.

It was all a game and they got caught. No harm no foul. Its all in the game yo. But don't go around pretending like they were doing BB a favor by beefing up their used game inventory.

That's just nonsense.

did you try using your passport to trade in? as an alternative
I did not
some ppl reported success using passport to trade in, when they were banned

It is not nonsense when the used section at bby has less games than a tiny mall gamestop. I'm saying we all benefit from competition and bby is fumbling the ball if they don't grab as many used games as possible. their current system is to do that by tradein not buy out say gamefly's used inventory in a ptivate sale. with the depreciation accounting factored in it is not easy to lose money in used games.

none of my stores even have fo:nv, sw force unleashed 2, or two worlds 2, all titles they should have a ton of. it is poor business imo

It wasn't by name, it was by ID number. Which is why I was able to trade in using my passport a month ago.

I assume you meant DL ID? I thought you would have to give the same (your) RZ#, so this is implying the system do not match by RZ#?

All subjective. Your local BB may not have their rack filled, but a couple of the BB's closest to me are flooded with used copies of Two Worlds 2, Dragon Age II, Sonic Unleashed, etc.

I haven't traded any games to BB since July until yesterday. I noticed they have this new handheld scanner that can scan barcodes and images(I assume cause I had the front of my license scanned). It use to be where my license would be put into this machine with a slot. I also sign my signature on the credit card machine pad instead of the regular rectangle looking black digital pad attached to the original ID scanner.

It looks like my BB has merged the trade in system with there POS system.

Yes, and it was malfunctioning at my local BB, so I had to go to Customer Service after about an hour to trade in. Joy!

I've used my GCU membership (i.e. RZ#) on multiple trades with other people doing my trades for me (and once with my passport) after I was banned. It was in no way linked to your trade in ban. Name and birthday wasn't either (I still wouldn't have been able to trade with my passport). The only thing left is your Drivers License ID.

See, they never "scanned" my ID or anything of the sort and I always just signed a piece of paper after the trade; no digital pad as you stated. I would say that varies based on region.

I agree that banning high volume traders might not be in their best interest but it definitely depends on what you trade. Personally, for every Band Hero I trade they have gotten stuff like Darksiders II, Sleeping Dogs, Ghost Recon: FS, Spec Ops:The Line in multiple amounts. I have traded in numerous times where the guy is like you are the first person I have done a trade in with this game. They need those types of traders. I agree though if all you are trading is Wii shovelware and PS2 games then a ban might be in your future.

I just heard they decided to ban all game traders. No one is allowed to trade anymore.

j/k - It looks like everyone who was banned, is banned again.

Exactly, why I phrased my response the way I did.

Ugh, had my dad trade in some games for me today and even after him telling the lady twice to not forget my GCU she fucked it up and forgot the extra 10%. It's only another $4 but can I call cs and get my 10% or something? I heard people being able to get there's after the fact.

To all the people who think this is actually good business strategy, if you were running your own game store chain, would you pay $20 for tons of copies of Two Worlds Two and sell it for $20?

If so, good luck to you.

Again, if you exploited the hell out of their TIVs and made a ton of credit, good for you. But if you think what you did in any way benefited best buy, you're either completely delusional or completely stupid. Come on now. Let's call a spade a spade.

tell your dad to check the numbers before signing.

Please oh please let me still be unbanned at BB, since I still have to unload :ps3:Darksiders II and :ps3:Prototype 2 back to them for around $60. I got rid of :ps3:Sleeping Dogs(good game, but not much to do once the main story is done) and :ps3:Rayman Origins a few weeks ago just as they updated the damn system so you don't always get a trade receipt printed up.

Unfortunately, wouldn't you know that that's the first trade transaction of mine NOT to show up on my RZ and as such I got fucked outta about 50-ish RZ points. I'm currently working with one of the BB mods on their forums trying to get credited for that(and the 100 points for signing up for their DOTD emails).

You just have to ask for them to print a receipt. The System no longer automatically prints one. It's super simple for them to print it up. I always ask just for such occasions that it doesnt show up on my rewards or if the screw up the gift card. (which has happen to me) So I always want a receipt as it's the only proof i have of trading in those games

Oh I know. But I haven't been back to that BB that I did the two game trade in to in about a week or two. So I have no idea if there's even a way for them to check and print/re-print a receipt for me.

I'm hoping so, although I don't really see myself rebuying either SD or Rayman Origins EVER, so there's a slim to nil chance of me attempting to trade them in again and go over the 1 per title per year limit.

But missing out on the points is definitely annoying.
