THIS THREAD OP IS NO LONGER ACTIVELY UPDATED WITH NEW PROMOS.

All Promotions are available in-store only, and they DO NOT stack!

Only the 10% Bonus from Gamers Club Unlocked will stack with these offers, and it definitely does stack despite what some employees will say.

Please read FAQ below before asking questions!

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the **% bonus TIV work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150.

How does the 10% Gamers Club Unlocked bonus work?
The 10% bonus for Gamers Club Unlocked members is calculated from the base trade in value. So in the above example, a $100 trade would get an extra $10 with the GCU membership bonus. So if there was a 50% trade in bonus it would be $100 base, $10 Gamers Club Unlocked bonus and $50 TIV bonus for a grand total of $160.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine (which typically has a couple of great coupons every month). It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

I didn't get my 10% bonus or the employee said it doesn't stack, what gives?
As of September 2012 the trade in system at Best Buy was updated, and employees seem to be having a hard time making sure that they add the GCU bonus. It should be added immediately after they scan your games, and before they take your personal information. You also should always try to know your full trade in value with bonuses before going to the store so that if the price is different you can identify it immediately. The 10% bonus definitely does stack with any TIV promo (100%, 50%, it doesn't matter). All the Gamers Club Unlocked pamphlets say so, as does the website, and are a great place to point to if an employee or a manager tells you otherwise.

Do we get Reward Zone points for trade-ins??
Yes. You get one point for every pre-bonus dollar traded in. So if your TIV was $100 before bonuses, you get 100 Reward Zone points. Gamers Club Unlocked members (and possibly standard Gamers Club members) get double points for everything gaming, including trade-ins. So in the same example you would wind up with 200 Reward Zone points. To get Reward Zone points you must have them include your Reward Zone membership information (easiest to look up by phone number) with your trade-in (this is required for the Gamers Club Unlocked bonus anyway).

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. Some states, or even localities (county, city, etc.) may not allow the sale of Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app often sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it if you don't have to.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case (as in, it is possible that has never been the case). When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game 99% of the time. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market and honestly, Best Buy probably doesn't trust their employees to make sure all the extra content is included. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen at an atypical time, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though, and busier stores are more likely to have employees that have done more trade ins and know the rules.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a government issued ID (passport, drivers license, military ID, etc.).

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule. It is their right to do so.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

I went in today to trade in Resistance 1-3, so I could re-buy them in the collection bundle. (lol). I got in total for all 3 was $7 w/ GCU 10%. I spent on the collection was $10 and change with GCU $20 coupon. Not to shabby new copies of my games with all the dlc! :D

So I tried to trade in Far Cry 3 (Xbox 360) but was told that it was too new and the system would not accept it - anybody ever see this before?

It's listed online as a $27 trade in (at least it was yesterday) but the in store system didn't have it so they wouldn't let me trade it in. Quite an annoying thing to happen and I've traded in games newer than this one before (it's been out almost 2 weeks) so I'm not sure why this happened.

I kind of guessed that might be it but that is too bad since the girl helping me was the most consistently helpful person at my store.

I guess she can't get it 100% right either - nothing against her but I think BBY is always changing their software, at least that's the impression I get from associates, they always have to ask where things have been moved to or changed on the computer.

Do you have a retailer specific version or something that wouldn't scan? Or were you trading in disc only? My guess is if she was searching she was searching for "farcry 3" instead of "Far Cry 3". The first comes up with no results. It's $25 by the way, not $27. Just looked it up myself.

Nope, just a regular version I bought from the same store on launch, manual and case included. And I think she scanned it so I don't know abut spelling but she was able to look the online trade in page for me and found it there, it just wouldn't let her do an in store trade.

It was odd but she is the best associate at my store as far as I can tell and has never had a problem with anything before so I am leaning more toward something in their system being screwy.

I traded it in at GameStop already but I prefer to buy and sell from Best Buy. Thanks for checking though.

any of yall traded in Black Ops 2 yet?

I feel like trading it in today for $40, but don't know if I should hang on to it...

Hitman and Far Cry 3 have been getting most of my attention at the moment, and when i DO play BLOPS 2, I get tired of the whole "get a kill, get killed, repeat" cycle I always seem to find myself in.

Only thing holding me back is I've only played the first mission in the campaign, and I always like to try to beat the stories in COD games before I trade them.

I just don't want to miss out on the full value I could get now though...I only paid $48 for the game anyways.

COD values usually stay strong so I'm holding onto it. Its fun with friends and zombies. Campers piss me off, but what are you going to do. Holding out till Nuketown Zombies hit for PS3 then might trade it in later.

I'm sure 6 months from now you can still trade BO2 in or sell it for at least $30, so why trade it in now unless you don't plan on playing it again.

haven't even opened my copy... is this any good? I guess I can open it and try and then trade in if anything

Have the values gone up since switching to 50% or was the 100% still better in the end?

I was going to trade in my BLOPS 2 until the patch since that fixed much of what I hated about the game. Still not perfect but I'll keep it for now. You should definitely play the campaign IMO, it's a lot less linear and has some nice twists from the routine COD campaigns.

The only reason I traded in Far Cry 3 is because I want to get the PC version due to superior graphics and mods - it's a really fun game.

Oh I know FC3 is great haha, I meant that and Hitman were getting most of my playtime.

And my bro has BLOPS 2, so I can always borrow it from him for the campaign.

I just wanted more money to add to my ipad fund at BBY.

From what I see, not many new games are reaching $40 in TIV except BO2. Probably because all the holiday sales, but still, 100% was a little better.

Traditionally, 50% has been a bit better by about $1 and some change at least if you're GCU for recently released games. And yes, for recently released games, they get bumped to $24 base vs. $20 base under 100% promo.

100% is much better for those games that have been out for a while in the $5-15 range as they don't adjust those down when the 100% comes around and tend to be slightly higher than GS or Amazon.

i ran 21/5 earlier in mp. good stuff. i still don't do as good as i did in mw3 with recon/marksman, but that's life, things change. i have fun running hunter killer, care package and guardian. i still havnt touched campaign or zombies yet.
i played a few rounds last night and got the final kill cam 3 rounds in a row, my clanmates hate me. i got knife kill, hunter killer drone and hatchet kills for kill cams, awesome.

but if your bro has it and you arent playing mp, trade it in and borrow his to beat the story.

I had someone at best buy tell me this before when I tried trading in New Super Mario Bros 2 for DS. She couldn't find it in the system, so she said it's probably too new to trade-in. I told her It's definitely on the website, and to only search "Super Mario Bros" rather than "Super Mario Brothers" like she was doing. Because she was putting in too many words into the search, it wasn't returning anything. I ask them to search just "Far" or "Far Cry" next time. Maybe you'll have better luck then.

The same thing happened today with Wii-U Nintendo Land today with the wife. Said it was too new and could only give $1 for it. She tried to get them to search for it a different way but they refused.

My store came up with a good idea for Nintendo Land. Just have them scan a retail copy of it. It comes right up. The barcode on the package game must be different from a retail copy.

It does have a different upc. Same thing happened to me but I saw a user post his BB grabbed a copy off the shelf to scan. When the CSR was having trouble finding it, I grabbed one and saw they were indeed different. He scanned the store copy and it popped up for the trade in.

I traded in a copy of NintendoLand from Gamestop and it scanned just fine for Best Buy's trade-in. I wonder why it's different for others.

Man, I hope this isn't a new trend with Best Buy.

Yea I tried to trade in Assasin's Creed 3 a week and something after the game released and they gave me the same story, 1$. Also, same thing happened with Far Cry 3...some manager or something told me it was an agreement with the game company which I knew was BS but I was like ok....

Well this is at least good to know, it will help me at least plan better.

I hate when publishers do crap like this. The reason I buy new games on launch is because I know I can try them and perhaps finish them or figure out I don't like them and then trade them in if I don't want them and not really lose money. If they take that away I just won't buy them until they so on sale later or I'll just buy a used copy to begin with.
Man, I hope this isn't a new trend with Best Buy.
It has always been like that. I remember it took Gunstringer 3 weeks after release to get an official trade in price.

The part about it being a deal with the developer/game company was total BS. The manager in that story was just making shit up.

Some games this happens with, some it doesn't. The Wii-U stuff is in the system but it just hasn't been fully updated in the software it seems. The Nintendo Land (and other games) UPC difference has just been causing issues when combined with incompetent workers who want to tell you that you can't do something rather than work the extra little bit. What happens when you hire 18 year olds to boost your staff for 2 months.

I figure out why some nintendo lands aren't ringing up automatically. It's because theres a not for resale sign on the back. There are 2 upc for it if it ends with 0 it can be traded in but if it ends with 6, its not for resale. Just found out the hard way. Lady didn't even want to accept it disc only. fuck now I'm gonna have to duck her.

For those of you having trouble trading in Nintendo Land try taking it to another Best Buy. When I tried trading in 2 copies of it they scanned them and nothing came up. They told me it was too new and the system wasnt updated. I then took them to another location and they took them with no problems. Kind of weird if you ask me.

No they both scanned it. The guy at the first best buy even showed me what came up. Im just saying maybe they really do have to manually update their system. I remember when Kmart was giving out the gaming coupons that if you bought something and didnt get the coupon, if they restarted the registed it would work the 2nd time.
It's not weird. The second one probably just actually typed it in.
Hmmm. Maybe the system updated while you were going from one store to the other. I've had tivs change while I was driving to the store. Very rare.

Next time you go to BestBuy look at the signs in the gaming section. They clearly say the 50% ends on 12-25-12. If you're concerned ask an employee.

No, you're not understanding what has been said. Scanning doesn't work because BBY doesn't have the UPC of the NintendoLand that came with the Wii U in their system. If they typed it up, they would have found it. But, they were lazy/assumed you were wrong/jumped to conclusions of why it didn't show up and you wasted time going to another store that you shouldn't have had to. People have been reporting this issue with Nintendoland for a bit, and it's possible that the system just hasn't been updated with all the Wii U UPC's. If Best Buy's computers needed to be manually updated every time they changed it they'd still be offering $40 for Duke Nukem Forever at half the stores in the country because employees are way to incompetent to rely on them to manually update the system.

I'm seeing 100% trade in too. Well they be nuking TIV in the next hour? I see some games that would be getting $50+ if the current prices hold.

Yeah. I've just got a lot of Gamestop credit I'd like to convert so I'd be happy with even trades. Also my Best Buy will be a zoo Sunday and Monday so I'm either going to do my trades when they first open or right before they close. I hate holiday traffic and commotion

I can confirm that it's 100% in store. Went to trade in a copy of Black Ops 2 around 1030 Pacific. Didn't even know about the 100 percent. During the trade in the worker was like whoa, you're gonna get 54.00 total for the BO 2. Pretty surprised and happy that I decided to go on when I did.

Wow. I would expect they'd adjust the TIV. I don't think my BB is 24 hours right now (I wish it was) but I know TRU is.

It will be interesting to see what these values are in the morning.
