THIS THREAD OP IS NO LONGER ACTIVELY UPDATED WITH NEW PROMOS.

All Promotions are available in-store only, and they DO NOT stack!

Only the 10% Bonus from Gamers Club Unlocked will stack with these offers, and it definitely does stack despite what some employees will say.

Please read FAQ below before asking questions!

In-store trades may be done in the Gaming Dept or at customer service depending on the store.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the **% bonus TIV work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150.

How does the 10% Gamers Club Unlocked bonus work?
The 10% bonus for Gamers Club Unlocked members is calculated from the base trade in value. So in the above example, a $100 trade would get an extra $10 with the GCU membership bonus. So if there was a 50% trade in bonus it would be $100 base, $10 Gamers Club Unlocked bonus and $50 TIV bonus for a grand total of $160.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine (which typically has a couple of great coupons every month). It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

I didn't get my 10% bonus or the employee said it doesn't stack, what gives?
As of September 2012 the trade in system at Best Buy was updated, and employees seem to be having a hard time making sure that they add the GCU bonus. It should be added immediately after they scan your games, and before they take your personal information. You also should always try to know your full trade in value with bonuses before going to the store so that if the price is different you can identify it immediately. The 10% bonus definitely does stack with any TIV promo (100%, 50%, it doesn't matter). All the Gamers Club Unlocked pamphlets say so, as does the website, and are a great place to point to if an employee or a manager tells you otherwise.

Do we get Reward Zone points for trade-ins??
Yes. You get one point for every pre-bonus dollar traded in. So if your TIV was $100 before bonuses, you get 100 Reward Zone points. Gamers Club Unlocked members (and possibly standard Gamers Club members) get double points for everything gaming, including trade-ins. So in the same example you would wind up with 200 Reward Zone points. To get Reward Zone points you must have them include your Reward Zone membership information (easiest to look up by phone number) with your trade-in (this is required for the Gamers Club Unlocked bonus anyway).

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. Some states, or even localities (county, city, etc.) may not allow the sale of Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone/Android app is way off, why?
The app often sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it if you don't have to.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case (as in, it is possible that has never been the case). When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

How come the GOTY/complete version doesn't show up in the estimator?
Best Buy doesn't differentiate between the vanilla and GOTY/complete versions of a game 99% of the time. This is largely a cover-all policy due to the fact that many GOTY editions include the game's DLC and bonus content as one-time use codes; meaning that the game has no extra value on the 2nd hand market and honestly, Best Buy probably doesn't trust their employees to make sure all the extra content is included. So no extra TIV for your GOTY games. The plus side is that GOTY and vanilla versions sell at the same price, so if the DLC is located on disc and you find a GOTY version in-store it will be the same price as the vanilla one.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but updates can and do happen at any time. Sometimes an update will happen at an atypical time, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Lately some people have been told the policy is 1 game per system (i.e. you could trade in 1 copy of a game for Xbox, 1 for PS3 and 1 for Wii), and have been actively turned down when trading in more than one copy. Whether this is actually something they are banning for or if it is just what employees are being told to follow to limit multiples is unknown. Trade multiples at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually. Yes, this also applies to DS, 3DS, PSP, etc. If you have the manual and artwork you should trade it in though anyway to improve the quality of the selection for people who may want to buy the game in the future (you can't know if the game will be complete when you buy online for example).

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only. Employees have gotten much better about knowing this policy though, and busier stores are more likely to have employees that have done more trade ins and know the rules.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but some stores apparently accept consoles as well. Call ahead before bringing it in. That said, the TIV for most hardware is lower than competitors.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or even city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll need a government issued ID (passport, drivers license, military ID, etc.).

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return. You might even be flat out denied by the employee or manager despite the official rule. It is their right to do so.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracked on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

Remember, all trades are technically at the discretion of Best Buy and they can refuse to accept a game for whatever reason they want (outside of you being black, woman, Jewish, etc.).

Normally wouldn't post so off topic here but at least in this thread most people will know I'm trying to be helpful rather than just spamming.

If you haven't already, you should really try out Shopkick. Great way to easily get free giftcards to Gamestop and Best Buy which I know the people in this thread are fans of. I've had it since June and I'd estimate right around $190-$200 in Best Buy giftcards earned so far. I do have a referral link in my signature, we'd both get some bonus points for going through that, but you can also just download it off the app store/google play. Once you do, I'd recommend CHECKING OUT THIS SITE to see how you can really get a lot out of it
THANK YOU! I can't stress it enough how much i think Shopkick plays well into being a CAG. I mean majority (if not all) of us shop at Best Buy/Target weekly (some of us even daily...Shipwreck...) might as well invest into the app that rewards us for just being there. Great for "credit to credit flips" to those who haven't figured out the real genius of it ;)

It really frustrates me when I ask for receipts from the ppl at BB but they won't give me one. "Don't worry I posted it to your Reward Zone"
Yep. I asked for a trade receipt as well and the lady was looking at me like I was weird and she asked, "You want a trade receipt?"

Yeah, I don't trust this crap store. I would get receipts of receipts if I could.

I complained about this in the BB Community group, they asked me for the receipt and I told them I'm not always given them in store and they said thats wrong. I did get my points for one receipt I had in hand. I now always ask them to photocopy me a copy.

At my bestbuy they print out two of each trade firm. You sign one for their purposes and you get one to keep for yourself.

Idk what to do...I want my damn 100+ points I'm owed :(
stop complaining here, pull your big boy panties up and go to the store

as stated before, if the trade just happened, the games and paperwork are still at the store

they can just make you a copy

IF you are old enought to trade, you are old enough to make sure you receive a receipt (I just ask for one and have never been turned down, yes I had a staff member act put out by the request, but I just waited for them to print me a copy)

Their software used to automatically print a customer copy, now they must request it on their screen...it's easy, just not automatic (and yes, I have requested this should go back to being automatic...perhaps others could do the same...)

Everyone -

DO Not finish a transaction without your 10% (this assumes you are a $15/year GCU member - not free).

Do not leave the counter without a copy of your receipt (assuming you want one). If needed, just stand there and ask for a manager (but I really doubt it will come to this).

Doing one or both of these two things will not only make you happy, but it will help force train the staff on the finer points of processing a trade...

Remember these "geek" staff members are not like a GS staff member that does nothing but game trades, they are responsible for quite a bit more and doing trades is not a "regular" occurance such as it is at GS.

I really doubt these staff members are out to screw anyone, they just need multiple transactions to get the routine down (hence the occasional need for a peer or supervisor to help...)

But just as a GS member can make an occasional mistake or slip in a refurb fee ... you are in control of the finalizing of the trade... just stay in control and walk out happy (albeit maybe a lil frustrated, but overall happy....vs posting and complaining here after the fact...)

I also have them state the base value for each title as they scan/enter it in... yesterday, I (not them) screwed up on a title... when she stated a base value of $.50 cents (vs the $12 I expected)... I then pulled that game and realized My stupid error...

stay calm and in control...

Also fyi they CAN scan the UPC for the game, and it will pop up (or should), and you can save a lot of time like that.

hes right though, instead wasting time by complaining he could just go there and get the paper work he needs to solve the problem
Except that it's a waste of a drive since last time I was there I asked a manager to print out my record from 5 days ago and he said "ahhhhhhh....idk about that"

But I will try again

You've obviously never dealt with an incompetent store. These things are not possible. What I found to work is once i get home I fill out a negative survey, with my contact info in it and request assistance. They will send a follow up email and you can list everything for them. I ended up getting about $120 or so credit (most of it I was due anyway I think they gave me a bonus $15 or something) last year. But it is the easiest way to make sure everything is taken care of.

I have to say my local store is terrible now since they got rid of the gamers club counter. Even the store manager said they do not have the ability to renew GC in store. He is the real manager not the MoD. So I didn't get my 10%. I did get a receipt this time, but receipts are inconstant. I was able to get a MoD to write out that I was due $2 off my next purchase because they couldn't do the 10%.

What's a MoD? Manager on Duty? Just a temporary manager until the real manager gets back?

Did they also give you your $ towards silver (now elite/elite plus?) did you also get your reward zone points that you would have gotten as well?
Also, incompetent store or not, we have given enough information for YOU to guide them through the process now! So it is no longer solely THEIR fault, but if you continue not getting your 10%, and don't press for it/show them HOW, with all the information and step by steps we have listed, yeah it IS possible.

What's a MoD? Manager on Duty? Just a temporary manager until the real manager gets back?
yes. 99% of the time when you ask for a manager or store manager at BB they are a MoD. The actual store manager is only in the store about 15 hours a week from my experience. I knew this guy was the new store manager because I was pretty tight with most of the employees and they told me when he was transferred to my store. Unfortunately there are only 2 girls that still work there (both cute) that remember me by name and say 'hi', but they don't know how to do anything. haha I even brought up the castlevania GC sign up thing and it wouldn't scan at the register. The manager said he didn't want to sign me up as a new member because it may jack up my reward zone account, since it still shows me in the system even though my gamers club expired in march.

I added a new post above this one.

But yeah, I got my missing points added to RZ, upgraded to silver (since i didn't get the progress bar stuff), and giftcards. The only thing she couldnt sort out is the rayman blow up thing that was supposed to come with the game. I located one in store, but she couldn't find a way to get it out of inventory and into my hands.

OH and the main reason I go through with the transaction is because they already have my RZ info in there when the trade is started as well as the games you plan to trade. Even if the transaction is cancelled, they still show as a trade in for those games in the system according to a reliable BB employee, so if it happens and you have multiple copies it could in theory generate a ban by the system.

... Is what's happening is that they scan your RZ card for whatever reason? Because there is no way "They already have my rz info in", NONE of your info is in until they either look you up by phone number, or give them your ID. If you have them scan your reward zone card and think that will give you the 10% that is 100% wrong.

They enter my phone number before they do anything, they dont use my rz card at all. Scanning the card has never worked on my account. I think it is because i have a really old account. I didn't get the 10% this time because my membership expired, but the point is they said they can not renew or sign me up as new at the store level for gamers club. I still got the 100%, but obviously not the 10%.

(I was talking about the system tracking trade ins with the RZ/phone number info)

Unfortunately I have faced incompetence (with stories to boot, including a trade last year that took almost two hours (deleted the games not once, but twice .. all DS cartridges that required look up)... and recently a geek staffer that could not find the 10% button but the tech manager finally came over and showed him after two other staff members could not...) In both cases I just waited till it was figured out (and yes, these are just a couple stories at different stores...)

Last year on two occassions the 10% (I actually received 20%) was given to me by the manager (MOD) as a separate gift card.

I now just know to allow time (the 2 hours was the worst by far...) and am pleasantly surprised when, such as last night, I'm in and out in less than 15 minutes...

It's just not as smooth as GS... there I just watch out for refurb fees (I just take them to another store or come back another day...) and how promos calculate (recently the 50% off games Vs using a coupon)....

But if a member here is saavy enough to take in not one but 2 Maddens and old enough to carry an ID, they can be in control of a trade..

The games are still yours until you sign their paperwork... so if the amount is wrong or you need a receipt... do not sign, much less walk out...

i appreciate your choice to go home and complain/rectify, I just prefer to get it done at the store and be done with it...

The monitors at CS turn.

What's worse than not getting your 10% is when they give you no paperwork to sign (because the printer is down) and no receipt (because nothing printed) and end up giving you a blank gift card.

And when you call them back, they find no record of your transaction and keeping (alot) of your property.

That's how bad they are about the trade-in program at some places.

So I'm having BB trouble. They keep adding my trade ins to my RewardZone when Im in the store but they never show up and they never give me a reciept. I contacted BB CS and they said they need the pin number....so far they owe me Madden 25x2 ($90) and $36 worth of other games for trade in points but I have no receipt. Is there any way to get them since BB CS doesnt have access.
you don't ask for a receipt?

So I went to the bb where I used to live and wanted to see if they'd take my games that had rings on them from an older xbox. To my luck they took them all. 2 of them were unplayable the employee told me he didn't care lol.

the last two trades i did, they didn't even bother to open the case if the games were inside. of course my games were inside.

When they have you sign that piece of paper, it tells you whether or not you got your 10%. I don't ask for a receipt, because that paper is enough for me to see if I got it.
I keep my trade-in receipt or have them do a gift card check and print me a mini receipt. I like to have a receipt with my cards until after I use them the first time.

I went to do a trade but the store was in usual crap condition so I left before I could miss dinner. Some douche manager was trying to get someone to take my trade instead of doing it himself since he wasn't busy.

I have so freaking many gift cards... I wouldn't know which receipt goes with which. I honestly don't even know the exact amount in credit I have lol.

Omg! That sounds overwhelming! Send me some of your card numbers, including pins, and I will check them for you.

I have noticed many people trading in a large number of DVD's.

I was wondering if you could also get banned for that or if they think that you are abusing the high trade in values,

Any ideas?

Any idea if the 100% goes on to next week? Thinking of trading in GTA V. I just can't really get into it and it feels like to me like all the other GTAs.

the main reason why i hit premier silver :(
I hit Elite just from the trade ins (was at $1000 or so before the first crazy sunday).

Wait for the online, that is one of the BIG things they people are waiting for on this, october 1st is when it goes live (mostly a test phase) but it will feature (I think 16?) players in a single server, and there will be actual missions, you can earn money, buy cars (with optional insurance so when they get blown up, you can replace it for a small fee), I think they said somewhere of about 500 missions day 1 on the online? Unlike GTA IV which was "here is a sandbox, play nice"

Meh, I don't think online is really going to get my interest. Maybe because im early on in the story (3 hours or so in,just doing story missions) but all of them just feel so bland.
