There have been issues with this promo not working on some stores' systems or simply not even being available, the issue seems to be related to disc-only games (or any game that is typed rather than scanned) so plan accordingly. The $20 extra is once per trade-in, meaning 4 games or 123 games it will only be $20 extra per transaction. So if you want to trade in 8 games, do it in two separate transactions. ****

In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

Thats like asking how a company keeps track of sales for the day / week / month etc.
They also print out that paper every time you trade in that keeps track of what you trade that has a transaction id # on it for each trade.

Fellow cag's I just want to say hello and thank you. As a longtime lurker I simply had nothing to contribute but just as a reminder nba 2k11 for ps3 is still $10 at gamefly and trades in at 18(with 50% preorder bonus) at bb. Thanks for all the help guys

Christ, I guess I worded that terribly based on your shitty responses. Of course the computer tracks it automatically, what I was really wondering is how it visually comes up within their system. Does a huge red "HE'S TRADED IN 3 COPIES ALREADY. TELL HIM TO PISS OFF" come across their screen or is it just a small number somewhere that they may not even notice? Are the employees trained to check this number to make sure you haven't hit this limit?

What kind of condition do the disc have to be in. My gears 3 has a 2 inch scratch on it but it still plays. (Dog knocked over 360 while we were playing) I wanted to trade it in for skyrim while I can get $39.

I was told by a employee at the store, that this store would accept only three copies of the same game, from the same person,in the same day. But they could bring the same game in the next day with three copies of the same game, with no problems. As for bring in stacks of games, yes you are asking for trouble.
responses like this don't help a damn thing and give lurkers the inclination to abuse...abuse enough and the 3 limit will change.

Yes, I know where the edit / delete options are, as you can see. BBY will eventual catch the ones that totally abuse the system. There not looking to the ban the ones with a few copies of the same game (15-20), there looking for the ones that make it look obvious, trade 50-100 in a year. Like one guy that got 250 copies form the amazon $0.01 mess up, WTF, and then traded them to my bb. As far as I'm concern that's a good thing because if they get banned then they can't abuse it anymore, can they.

I think someone in this thread before said that regular employees can't see it but managers have access to it. Like all of your trade in history and whatnot.

From my own personal experience, if I traded in a game with the case, the employee would open the case, look inside to see if it is the correct disc, then close it, and move on to the next game. They would probably check the condition if it is disc only since it would kind of be a natural thing to do. Hope this helps.

I've traded in heavily scratched games from gamefly, and they checked the games and still took them.

If you mean stacks of the SAME games, then yes, you are asking for trouble. But bringing in a single copy of a bunch of games just says 'I play a lot of games' imo.

So far I've traded in 2-3 LARGE lots of games(10+) with them all being unique titles and I've also done a few doubles and triples but I stayed within the 3 per year limit. Unfortunately at least one of those varied lots was back before they started the Gamer's Club Unlocked and started doing promos.:bomb::cry:

They just opened the cases and looked to see the game in there.
I said all my games are in excellent to very little scratched (very lightly).
He said " they send them off to get refurbed so it dont matter."
Twice at the same store this happened

Eh. I don't like bothering with the "I'll give ya $2 each" bullshit which I always get when I put games up on CL. I traded about 20 games earlier tonight for about $200 after promo/GCU. Hell of a deal, since I think most cost me about $3-5. Most were stuff I kept saying I'd get to, but I never did.

Stuff like :ps3:Chronicles Of Riddick, :ps3:Prototype and the last Ratchet & Clank game(Crack In Time), for those wondering.

Sears.;) But if you wanna play a game exactly like it for the most part, then just go play Hulk: Ultimate Destruction from last gen. Basically all Prototype was is a skin swap from that game with some slightly different animations.

Still a fun game, but that's all it was really.:whistle2:#

Yes it was. As was Prototype. I especially liked the ability to assimilate other characters and infiltrate bases and such as them.

I traded in a few games tonight so I could use the credit to preorder WWE '12. They have WWE '12 on bestbuy.com that includes a $10 gift card, but the store is not honoring that, so I asked the rep if I could get the extra 40% for my trade-in anyway. He did one better and hooked me up with a 50% + unlocked 10%. So I preordered online to get the extra $10 gift card. The Best Buy trade-in program is really good with the bonuses and some nice employees.

holy cats if I would've known that I would've put it to the top of the backlog. That Hulk game was a real blast.

Some bonuses they're great with, but yet some other ones they don't have in store or don't realize they have in store or whatever. Case in point, I pre-ordered Catherine from them for PS3. Online it said it'd come with the artbook/soundtrack like every other place was offering.

I went in store to pick up my pre-ordered copy and lo and behold the soundtrack/artbook wasn't shrink wrapped to the actual game case like at other stores. They even opened a copy to see if maybe they had packed it inside the case for every copy. Nope.

So I ended up returning that pre-order.

Now if they would start doing $10-20 credits IN-STORE like Amazon does on it's website right now, that would influence me to start picking up more games at release. Paying less for something at launch is still a better deal to me than some artbook or character skin. That is, unless that skin/artbook ends up being worth $30+ on eBay.;)
As a head up some copies of singularity ($20) come with prototype for free. My BBY still has 5 of those.
I'm pretty sure that promotion ended a while ago though.

Here's my small contribution to this thread:

Another good flip from Target B2G1to BB is Driver: Renegade for the 3DS. Sells for $19.99 and trades in to BB for $16 before any bonuses.

I'll see if I can find any other good flips besides the ones already mentioned.

I felt like Prototype took a few pages from Spider-man Web of Shadows as well as the Hulk game

I can confirm that there is no prompt that comes up when trading in 3 copies of a game per system per trade in account and then tradng in more. I ended up trading in 6 just dance 3 copies to the same employee(3 on sunday, 3 on monday) and nothing stopped me. I have a good relationship with all the emloyees there so that helps with employees stopping me but the system doesn't do jack to stop multiple excessive trades. I look at the screen during trade ins often so I know every step they go through to do a trade in. Hec, I can do it myself now.

I don't suggest trading in more than 3 per system per account. I just really got curious as to what would happen, especially since my TRU had about 18 copies of the game on that Sunday.

No duh, he was being sarcastic. That is why I quoted him and not the other dude who asked the question. I only posted that it doesn't stop you during trade-ins, not that you should do it or you won't get banned. Don't be pissy and assume I'm a newb because the join date on my account was August. It had been probably a year since my last sign in and I couldn't remember my username so I just created a new account. Way easier to do. You usually stay pretty civil on here donut so I'm just gonna chalk this particular case of arrogance, and anger on my part, up to being tired. No harm, no foul.

Edit: By the way, that is neccessary info consdering the fact that they probably get a ton of multiple trade-ins from people whch is partially why values drop so horribly so quickly. If they did have something to stop multiple trades, values might not drop as bad as they do as they wouldn't have people abusing it for the rest of us. I highly doubt they have people look at competitor's website's prices until they get an excessive number of submissions online or in store.
I felt like Prototype to a few pages from Spider-man Web of Shadows as well as the Hulk game
Interesting that you say that cause prototype did indeed use a slightly updated version of that hulk ultimate destruction engine :)

I kinda wish that Prototype(and H: UD) allowed you to obliterate more of the game world with your powers though. It got boring and repetitive bringing down the same building(s) in H: UD and I believe the same ones were able to be knocked down in Prototype.
What kind of condition do the disc have to be in. My gears 3 has a 2 inch scratch on it but it still plays. (Dog knocked over 360 while we were playing) I wanted to trade it in for skyrim while I can get $39.
I know this was a few pages back but...

I've had wildly different reactions to disc that have some scratches (mostly PS2 stuff). I've had stores that check but are only really making sure that there isn't like a burn hole through the disc (one employee was telling me about a time someone actually tried to trade in some disc that clearly had been in some type of fire). So long as it isn't anything like that they'll take it.

I've had stores not check at all and then tell me that they now refurbish all the disc so scratches aren't a big deal anymore.

I've had stores reject my disc for light scratches, or because the disc had been run through a disc-doctor buffer and they had no clue what that was (disc doctor does in fact work but it leaves a series of vertical lines that sort of "spiral" towards the center). The average Best Buy employee has no idea how a laser disc reader works; concentric vertical lines (read: not scratches) typically won't interrupt the disc playing.

I'm going to be writing up an article for a technique on how to remove scratches for my site sometime this week; it can work great for those employees who are more like the latter or if you just have a disc that isn't reading right that you want to play. I'll link it in the thread when it's done.

Damn guys, all this talk about noobs and abuse and insulting eachother. Like I said in my original post, I'm not looking to abuse the system, I'm worried about looking sketchy trading in even 2 copies (on separate, very spaced out occasions) in fear of ruining the good relation I have with the employees at my store.

And for clarification (because I am pretty new to this site), is flipping in general considered "abuse"? Because I see people post flip deals all the time and not get called out, but instead sometimes get thanked for it. I try to ask a legitimate question and some people (just donut, actually) can't help but to get on their high horse.

You did ask about trading in more than three and were asking for information in regards to whether or not the employee would know if you did (so in a sense you were asking is it possible to break the rules). I'm not saying that you deserved the hostility you got, but just to help you understand part of the reason you received it.

A lot of what you are asking is either covered directly, or somewhat indirectly in the OP - since I see you are a "CAG in Training" that means the very first post in the thread (just making sure).

To give you a more specific answer to your latest post, you can trade 2 copies of a game at the same time without any issue. Technically you can trade 3 but obviously this looks more suspect (not many people have 3 copies of a game). Most employees won't think anything of it, some might go "Jr. Detective" on you though and ask why you have 2 copies of a couple of tittles (although most are just asking out of pure curiosity rather than a malicious attempt to get you to admit to being a master criminal).

Semi-related, just tweaked/added a little bit to the FAQ in the OP.
Has anyone tried just telling the best buy coworker that you are flipping games for profit?
Only when asked about my source of games. I think you' re better off being upfront about it then lying. If i was an employee i would have the common sense to know the friends and families excuse can last for only so long. The employees i tell dont get mad at me when i tell them. But i only say if they ask.

yeah same here. i bent the truth yesterday, just tell them im converting target gift cards to best buy credit. and that i'd much rather have best buy credit than target credit. which is kinda true.

I know I've been told by the gaming supervisor at the store I go to to bring in as many games as I want, just dont cross the 3 limit per trip. I can do 3 the next day if I want though. He says it helps his #'s and the store gets extra hours to give to the gaming employees when they are higher up in the rankings(#2 overall last month, I believe), so the other employees are happy too when I go a lot.

I'm honest most of the time too, but with some limits. I don't tell them I bought the game for 1/3 what they are giving me, but I do use the moving Gamestop/target/whatever credit line occasionally. Every now and then I'll just tell them straight up I got a good deal on the games and now I can buy more games from them that I actually want.

Hell, back when I was flipping my way towards a new laptop I told them all exactly what I was doing. They did not seem to mind, most of them thought it was pretty cool that I was able to trade in enough games in like two weeks to get one.

While omitting the AMZ kindle cards. Your ” kinda true” comment made me chuckle a bit :)

The rep at my place was doing Gamestop ps2 flips (last week). The gaming supervisor was ringing him up. lol DCPinoy probably knows these people.

I find myself having to fess up because BBs trade in program has been so good for so long that its to the point the employees recognize me since ive made a good amount of trips to them. Whats it been like - 5 months now? Seems like this trade in deal for 50% has been up forever.
