In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

Oh, I know exactly why he was annoyed, was just perplexed that he didn't say no to the Playstation 3 version, too.

I'm not too concerned with getting banned from trading in games, as I don't really give them much business, and only do give them business when it works out in my favor. Hell, the last batch of games I traded in went towards buying a prepaid Visa card after a few months of having nothing to spend it on.

I guess we'll soon find out whether bans are initiated at the store level.

I'll be sure to relay the results.

Buying something to trade it right back in to the same store and same employee is so beyond dumb (unless you really dont care about being banned). Sorry to be the one to say it but im just saying what everybody else is thinking.

I wouldn't be too upset if I was banned from Best Buy, possibly a 1.5 - 2 out of 10 on the upset meter. I'm positive they'd end up having some uber awesome deal that made me regret it, occasionally, but with the dynamic nature of game prices, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

With Amazon I watch my steps more carefully. Best Buy? Eh.

And yes, I fully agree it was a dumb thing to do if I plan on spending much time in Best Buy. If that were the case I would have gifted the extra copy for Christmas, or flipped it to Goozex. Or happily made another full buy two get one free order later in the week. I'm not disputing that fact, nor am I trying to say anything along the lines of "wtf, how dare he get annoyed at me making a buck off them."

I feel the same way, but BBY has really outdone themselves this holiday. If they keep this up I'm sure a lot of banned people are going to regret not having that extra BBY credit available.

heh... really people? That many of you would pick a $20 gift card over nailing the gaming chick?

Forget that, if the blue shirt wants my trade-in she's getting all the inserts.

I already regret blowing through a ton of BB credit about 3-4 months ago or so, since I probably would've bought ANOTHER tv on BF with all I used to have and probably a PS3 bundle to go with that tv.;)

Instead I used it all on other games, most of which I traded in soon after trying em out cuz I thought they sucked.:whistle2:#

If anything though, I'm more pissed at myself for doing a TON of game trades BEFORE they started doing the bonus promos n shit. I traded in a ton of unique titles for $200-300 that would've probably netted me $400+ now assuming the values didn't tank.
heh... really people? That many of you would pick a $20 gift card over nailing the gaming chick?

Actually I would probably choose the latter. The chick working the closest BB is kinda cute n actually knows a lot about games/gaming. So that's definitely a plus, though gaming knowledge really doesn't matter at all when you're doin' the horizontal mambo.:booty:
though gaming knowledge really doesn't matter at all when you're doin' the horizontal mambo.:booty:
Maybe the way you do it...

the plus 40 % is still going when you buy a game 39.99 and up right because when I went to bb earlier they said there was no promotion and told me I couldn't cancel my trade in once they entered the games in the system

Damn I haven't done a trade-in for over a month. Still wondering if I got banned haha. If the bans are coming at the store level, I have a good chance I wasn't banned then. But I would say its a good 50/50 chance that Im banned.

I also will be reporting any ban developments later today.

On another note, I would hate to see you guys at my BB. 80% of the people working there are 22 year old girls.

Yeah, probably gonna do a dummy trade in next week. Will let everyone know what happens. On the other note, Best Buys work uniform does nothing to make the girls any cuter.

To the people saying, "Oh you're going to be banned trading in 2 copies of a game", you're nuts. I've tracked in 3 copies of 50+ titles in the last 3 months, but I haven't traded any more than that. Follow the rules and you'll be fine, no need to be paranoid. I just traded in 3 games from my personal collection last night, and I'm not banned.

Also, I'd be careful nailing the blue shirts. 17 will get you 20. ;)

on that note, i rented a room to an 18 y/o guy the other day. This girl's mom calls at midnite asking which room her 16 y/o daughter is in. I say I have no idea, we only rent to 18y/o or older. She says she pays $10 to ping her location on her smartphone and it says she is in the hotel and gives me her boyfriend's name. I say yeah he's here but I can't give a room # without the police. So the police show up with her and I give them the room # and they check it out and the gf says nothing happened but the police tell me there was used condom wrappers all over the place. The mom brings her home but the cops say there is some new statutory law here where if they are both over 15 and under 20 it's ok. So this guy wasn't in any trouble... yeps.

I thought they had a Romeo and Juliet law that dealt with this

Edit: found it

It's under the Romeo and Juliet section stating its a state by state individual law that of given certain days apart it's legal. Here

If this is a true story you were lied to and I would call corporate. Lying to make a sale (which is technically what they did) is illegal in most states.

So when they are cute in their uniform just imagine what they got going on in clothes that do make them look good.

Don't know how old you think everyone here is, but I'm only 26. Ain't nothing wrong with 22 year old girls.

Sex laws vary greatly from state to state, and it is a common misconception that the legal age in the United States is 18, no state is higher than that (because federally speaking everyone is considered an adult at 18) but many states permit sex with people under 18; and not just dem southern states either. In Minnesota the legal age is actually 16 :whistle2:?, though there is some stipulations like "can't be an authority figure or a person in authority over them (read: cop, teacher)," and there MIGHT be a law in regards to an age gap but a quick search on my part couldn't find that when dealing with people 16 and over.

So wait... what thread am I in again?

quoted for truth!! (im 26 as well! woo!)

Man this thread really went off topic lol Anyway, traded in some games tonight and i asked the employee about banning. He said that they are suppose to report suspicious activity to the higher ups if they suspect theft. Didn't really say much else. But that doesn't make sense since people here have been cool with their employees and still got banned. IDK, i know i have been under the 3 per console limit so i should be ok but who knows.

A 22 year old girl would probably think I'm a 'creeper'(think that's the right term), especially since I'd be a decade n a half older than her.

the employee could casually mention it to a manager or the manager could be waking around hawking/spotting people
Has the ban message popped up more than once for you? When I tried a second trade in after their override it wasn't on mine.
Not sure. The guy today said it popped up yesterday and the sup hit the override.(Left some games then came back, so I didnt see.) Then today it popped up the they hit it again.
A 22 year old girl would probably think I'm a 'creeper'(think that's the right term), especially since I'd be a decade n a half older than her.
And I'm almost twice as old as her . I don't go for the 22 year-olds anyway. Having a teenage daughter tends to suppress that urge (as it should if you are any sort of normal). But some of those soccer moms I see in Best Buy are another story ;).

Oh yeah, Best Buy trade-in... Hmmm... I have nothing to trade. I wasn't banned last time I tried it last week, though, so that's something. The only problem I have is I'm stuck with a second copy of Halo CE since I couldn't think of anything else to buy. If only it had been this weekend or Monday when I bought all kinds of stuff using the B2G1 sale.

im 28, getting up there. I told the gaming supervisor I was trading in more games to amazon/tru cuz their tiv's werent that good anymore. lol, he told me he needed me to bring in more trade ins to help their #'s.

and yeah, i know its state to state, but still weird. When I was 18 we were camping or chillin at houses, not getting hotel rooms, but idk. i had to pay for college/etc so a hotel room was a luxury when we could party in a tent or an empty house. i know a 23y/o going with a 40y/o and i think thats weird but whatev. to each their own.

Those gamefly values don't even hold for a day anymore, huh? Well that'll teach me to buy anything unless I really want to play it as well .
Those gamefly values don't even hold for a day anymore, huh? Well that'll teach me to buy anything unless I really want to play it as well .
It's been that way ever since people thought it was cool to openly advertise the nightly deal flips on here, and other threads.

Also SD, but they were actually tame about it.

The combination of how many people traded in gamefly sale games, combined with the fact gamefly puts games on sale that are dropping in value is a really bad combo for people working through their backlogs.

I'm 25 so 22 is fine for me (my bestbuy is loaded with fine and cute looking woman). I fucked a 40 year old woman before and it was awsome as well :)
22 year olds AND hot ass soccer moms are always welcome I say. however, I recomend all you 20 somethings banging 40 year olds to be careful as a buddy of mine did that when he was 20 or so and the b**** was crazy. She got pregnant and "fell in love" with him. WOOPS.

Just steer clear of the crazies altogether. They come in every age group btw. They are never ever worth the trouble.

This is easily one of my favorite threads on CAG, lol.

I love how we went from talking to a girl working in the gaming section, to the legalities of sex with 18 year olds, to being 20 and hooking up with soccer moms. All in a BestBuy Trade-In thread.

Eh, I guess I'm boring... I'm 22, and have been with my GF, whom is 21, for a little over four years now. I just graduated earlier this year, and spent my entire time in college with this one, wonderful girl.

Anyhoo... just adding the info; I did a tiny trade out of curiosity sake today. As I said earlier, I traded in 4x of SmackDown Vs. Raw a few weeks ago... stupid, stupid, stupid. And so I was worried. But at least up at Customer Service (no one in the gaming section), the lady didn't hesitate and my trade was accepted.

Was debating on grabbing a couple Duke Nukems today. I figured 4x ($20 of credit) into $68 at Blockbuster and two $5 GCs = an easy 12 games. Which would be a good $70+ of Gamestop credit. ... But the closest Best Buy doesn't have any PS3 versions of Duke.

I'm debating if I want to order just two X360 versions in store and maybe grab them tomorrow.

17 will get you 20. ;)
That's what I thought too, but went to do a trade in today with some purchases from Gamestop's B2G1 and the pop up came up saying I've been banned. I've also done the 3 limit, but I guess I was in there too much that it must have flagged something in there system or someone thought I was suspicious  My previous trade in was on Monday.

Also note that I always removed the GS stickers so as not to cause any unwanted questions. All the BB Game employees that know me where shocked and said I was the first one to have that happen to them. I guess being first isn't always a good thing. Still got the trade in to go through though with their help. :bouncy:

Yeah, I'm pretty boring too. Been with the same woman since we were both 21. Then we got married at 24, and we're coming up on 20 years here soon... It's all just talk - never chased after a soccer mom and never would ;).

I'm heading to Best Buy for sure tonight - got a backlog of store pickups to do. Yeah, I got one of those now too in addition to my game backlog ;). I'm tempted to try some more trades but it would take some work to figure out what to trade so I think I'll just cool it for now.

Thanks, I can add GTA IV Complete, Halo Anniversary & Prince of Persia as good alternatives.

I got banned too, but I'm strangely okay with it. Didn't bother to have them override it, too lazy to flip right now and apparently the store got robbed of $6k worth of games two days before... I might do it again next year but probably not.

Way too much driving around.

Dang sorry to hear Prinny. Do you know what was the reason? Sounds like bans are recently issued. How long ago was your last trade before you got the notice?
woo i'm interested in finding out if i'm banned, but nothing to flip. =/ wonder if there's a way to check
I'm interested to find out too. Last time I traded was when I picked up MW3. I know for sure I traded at least 3 copies of NFS: HP and 3 KZ 3, it's still within the limit but who knows.

guy didnt ask for an ID when I did my last trade-in (Zelda release), after giving him my unlocked phone number, which was weird. Has me paranoid about being banned. Just havent had anything to trade in recently, to verify.

Could be so many things, who knows. The employees kept insisting I take the number and call them to explain but I didn't care enough.

Over 3x of certain titles, the 80+ PS2 "generic" PS2 games from GS... Near the end I got lazy and just traded in GS games w/ the case/sticker on them instead of disc-only b/c the employees said it was easier for them lol. This goes back a good 6 months or so. Dunno what/when it was flagged, but my trade-ins last week were fine.

If your employees know you and have your back, the ban doesn't matter whatsoever. So... even if you guys are nervous, it's probably not a big deal.

I can't believe you guys have blueshirts that are willing to override your ban, I could never even get blueshirts to just take the 4-6 games I was trading in without some kind of hassle (except at velo's store obviously). So weird.
