In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

Please do some mf'ing research before you start spouting off nonsense. Good for you that you've been doing it for years. Congrats. You're still wrong.

"We reserve the right to refuse any return." - gamestop return policy.

"Best Buy reserves the right to deny any return."
Actually PAL they do not have that right when on the same receipt it states the policy on used games. You might try and buying a clue before you spout off that smart ass mouth of yours. Also you might actually try learning a little bit about the law too. If they dared refused a return on a used game for no GOOD reason then I would sue their ass. That is why they DO NOT DO THAT.

Damn you are an idiot!!!

lol posts like these make me wish there was a CAG meet-up. in other news, does anyone actually plan on trading in games this weekend? bb employees (and shoppers) would probably be pissed, especially mine since trade ins are processed upfront at customer service in my bb.

For the fisticuffs or simply to see how many knuckle draggers there are?
I was told no trade-ins on Black Friday at my store.
I would imagine you'd get punched in the face for bringing trade ins on Black Friday. Every game is in a sleeve and has to be typed in. And make sure all the games have weird spellings and : in them to make it extra hard to look up. Maybe insist they search for Brutal Legend with the umlaut because it's worth more.
I have over 50 ps2 games and those two copys of kinect adventures to trade in. Ill do my boys at bestbuy a favor and bring it in before bf as its going to be too busy for trade ins
I went in early today and it wasn't all that busy. I got the regular game guy who knows me well by this point - was in and out pretty quickly.

The frightening thing - there were already a couple of tents outside. At least BF starts at midnght so I guess that isn't too long. (An aside - I think moving BF sales earlier and earlier is idiotic, but I knew this was coming. Next year it will probably start at 6pm Thursday ). But seriously, what is there that is worth camping out for? I mean, I tried to get that $79.99 Dynex TV online the other day and missed out, but after reading up on it I'm kind of glad I didn't. I did get the $39.99 blu-ray player (which is featured as minimum of 20 in the ad - so that must be a "hot" thing). But, meh, not too excited about that either. I certainly wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't a matter of sitting in the warmth of my office at my computer to get it. I didn't even bother buying any of the $30 games as I either have them already from the trade-in/preorder deal or I'd just wait for them to get cheaper later. I thought about getting the $199.99 Xbox 250GB Holiday bundle but passed on that. I did buy a few of the cheaper ones (Gears Triple Pack for $7.99, etc), but again, I could live without those too...

FWIW, I'm not banned from trading ;). I traded 11 games for over $150 after preorder promo. I preordered Super Smash Bros. on 3DS - release date is 12/31/2012 according to Best Buy... Yeah, I know, it's just a placeholder - thought that was funny though, especially considering they didn't have Super Mario 3D Land available for preorder just a month or so back - and I actually did end up buying that from Best Buy. It would have been nice if that could have been one of my preorders but for whatever reason they didn't have it in the system while they had Kid Icarus and Luigi's Mansion 2 in there.

There are CAG meetups, just go to the regional threads. The Chicago Area CAGs usually meet 1-2 times per year. Now we have one of the largest arcades in the country, so that helps as a meeting place.

Ten plus tents at my location. I asked inside and they said they were there when they opened on Monday.

So pissed right now, I am banned and I don't understand why. Did all my trading in at my local store and only did the max of 3 of one title like 2 or 3 times at the most, never went over that limit. The most games I have ever traded in at a time were like 5, I think, and they were different titles, of course. I have cancelled a couple of pre-orders, one was their fault (wrong version of a game) and one was Batman AC that I got a better deal at Walmart and they wouldn't PM it. I think I did one preorder that I just never picked up and was gonna eat the $5 on it.

I was trading in 2 games today and the guy that was helping me went away for a minute and game back with the general manager Kevin.

You would not believe the joy on this guy's face as he handed me the little printout that my transaction could not be completed. This is only the second time I have dealt with this GM, and this the second time he has been a GIANT ASSHOLE. I asked why this happened and he started going off about how I had come in a million times and I had bought games in the morning and then brought them back to trade in later that day. It was all pretty ridiculous and very unprofessional on his part. I really wanted to kick him in the face because of his attitude.

Guess I have suffered the kiss of death on my trade-in career with BB. Gonna call the "number" and see what kind of crap I get from them... This is total BS.

Hmm, seems like a good way not to get banned is to never ever let the GM see you.

The employees are probably sad that the most heinous of the flippers get banned, because to them, these flippers are their golden goose. Flippers boost trade numbers and preorder numbers, which in turn earn these employees free shit/games/consoles/swag. Why wouldn't the employees help you max your profit because both of you benefit (except in the long run the employee is out of a job when BB cuts hours because of profitability decreases).

I too would like to know about that 24" tv, since I'm looking at that as a backup should my plan of going to BB at 5-6pm and waiting till they start handing out tix for the big items at 10pm(hopefully) doesn't pan out. ;)
So did you? Not a million times but do this?
No, I did not. As I said, the things he said were ridiculous, like he was provoking me. If he had been professional and tried to explain what I had done to displease the BB trade-in gods or simply said he didn't know, I would have understood that. But he was zero help and asinine about it all. It was like this event was the best thing to happen to him today...

The only other time I have seen this guy is when I was trying to get my B2G1 free coupon from the unlocked packet to work. The BB rep I was dealing with asked for the GM's help. The GM basically cut me off and quickly said there was nothing he could do. It was a very short conversation.

In my line of work, I deal with customers all day and have done that for about 13 years. If I talked to ppl the way this guy talked to me, I wouldn't have a job for long.

Oh, never bought any VISA giftcards. I did buy 2 Kindle GCs though...

The managers at my closest store are actually pretty nice, although I did file a complaint on the one female manager the one time when she got snippy about the @Gamer coupons stacking with sale prices. They sent me a $20 gc for the trouble AND she was super nice to me the next time I went in there.;)

If you have an issue with an employee, be it a manager or not, fill out the survey they always seem to pimp out when you're checking out at the registers. Be very detailed when giving negative feedback as it WILL come back to whoever was rude/ignorant to you. After all, the managers and company don't want employees pissing off customers and causing them to spend their money elsewhere.;)

Oh, yeah, sorry - I wanted one for my office to replace an old 13" tube TV/VCR combo so I didn't care too much about quality, though I take it this one is fairly poor. But someone else in another thread said it uses like 54 Watts and that seems way too high for such a small LCD screen. Another model uses only 9 or 19 or something - I'll have to look into that. I mean, depending on how much you use it, you might "pay" for the savings in increased electricity usage. Again, I just saw this somewhere on CAG so take it for what it is.

Edit: Eh, it compares favorably to some of the other models they have. Annoyingly, the Energy Star Qualified models (of which this is not one) do not seem to show how many watts they use. But I'm comparing it to a Toshiba LED LCD and probably based on the LED usage (vs a bulb I guess for this one) I'm sure it uses much less. Plus it has a built-in DVD ;). That is $300... So, yeah, if I could get one of the $80 ones I'd probably get it, but I won't worry myself too much about it if I don't because of that. I can always get a better quality one that uses less power for not too much more later.

If they dared refused a return on a used game for no GOOD reason then I would sue their ass. That is why they DO NOT DO THAT.

Damn you are an idiot!!!
Are we suing with BBY Trade In Credit. Sign me up.

1) Buy Visa Gift Cards with BBY credit
2) Charge lawyer's fees to Visa Gift Cards
Hmm, seems like a good way not to get banned is to never ever let the GM see you.
Or to make them seeing you a positive thing. Like, asking him a question at a midnight launch of a game; now they remember you as that customer from the midnight launch, the kind of customer they want.

That is of course unless the only question you ask is "Where's the bathroom?"

Genius.

You must be the chosen one the profits spoke of!

Whether or not this was intentional, it's freakin' hilarious.

So guys, any last big trade ins you are doing before the 40% extra credit deal expires on saturday ? Im doing one more tommorow. Im sad that it will be gone for the rest of the year :(
Hopefully the these preorder deals come back as strong as ever next year. If they do the 5/100 next year Ill take advantage of it as i didnt do it this year

Unofficially there will be another 5/100, so I imagine/hope we'll see more promos.

I just got back from doing a last minute trade tonight. Not a real big one, but just wanted to make sure everything is still A-OK with my trade-in account...after reading about these others who have been banned. I didn't anticipate any problems, since I've traded a lot, but within the rules. Everything was fine.

On a side note, there were already 5 tents set up at my local BB. Crazy!

i traded in a few games today. im all good. i had to do it at cs cuz the gamer chic was busy, but im all good. only 1 tent. i talked with the girl about a sharp and a dynex $800 tv for $200, but im not waiting for anything. peace all

i told her i knew of some friends that were banned and i said it's probly a store level thing and she said they all think im awesome and she's an assistant manager. i can't really disguise myself cuz half the time im there with my 3 grrls/wife/baby, and like 90% of the time I have my baby son in my arms ;)

This Train has definitely slowed down. Found a few flips yesterday from GME to BBy but realize its not worth my time ($40 gain after commuting cost and pre-order).

So much damn time is wasted finding flips and driving to BBY. With the way BBY TIV dropped, I'm sure i'm not the only one sees it this way.

Best Buy has pre-owned games B2G1 free online at the moment. It stacks with the GCU unlocked membership as well. Grabbed a couple of titles, that statistically speaking, someone in this thread probably traded in. lol

less time flipping, more time gaming, more power to you.

I never really did the flipping thing as much in prior gens as I did these past two gens. But then again I only found CAG in 2005. Otherwise with all of the insane sales/clearances that had already transpired by the time I joined I would've likely traded a ton more stuff over the years.;)

But yeah, flipping can consume your life if you let it. That's why I think I'm done for now. Don't get me wrong. If an insane flip opportunity comes along I'll be right there to exploit it, but unless it's at least a full 100% profit over cost then I doubt I'll even bother.
