In-store trades are now done at the Trade-In Counter at the Gaming Dept.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F.A.Q. Best Buy has a short FAQ here.

How does the get **% with pre-order bonus work?
The percentage is based on the final total of your entire trade in, so if the trade in is $100 and there is a 50% bonus your final gift card value will be $150. After trading in your games, the employee SHOULD then sell you the pre-order for $5.

How much is a pre-order at Best Buy?
Pre-ordering at Best Buy cost $5, in fact, you aren't supposed to pay any more than that (and most employees won't let you if you ask). Yes, you can use the gift card you just received from your trade-in to purchase the pre-order.

Can I cancel a pre-order and keep the bonus?
Yes, the trade-in and the pre-order are completely separate transactions. Nothing will prevent you from returning to the Best Buy canceling the pre-order and receiving a refund. Some users have claimed that they were flagged for doing this multiple times though and were denied, so be aware of how many pre-orders you are cancelling. Also keep in mind the obvious facts that this is not how the program is intended to work and over abuse will negatively affect the program long-term. Lastly, returns are tracks on a personal level by a third party. (Read: try not to cancel a bunch of pre-orders)

Do I have to cancel the pre-order at the same store where it was made?
No, this can be handled by any BBY. Don't be surprised if you get a customer service employee who says otherwise though.

Can I pre-order once and get the pre-order bonus on my next trade-in as well?
YMMV. Officially, the answer is no, but there is nothing that actually requires the employee to sell the pre-order in order to apply the bonus so if your blue shirt is in a friendly mood they may be willing. Doesn't hurt to get to know the employees at your store. That said, expect that you will have to pre-order another game and be surprised if you don't.

Can I combine a 3 games for **% and a pre-order for **% bonus?
No. Bonuses do not stack, and you must pick one or the other. The only bonus that stacks with other promotions is the 10% you receive if you are a Gamers Club Unlocked member.

How do I become a Gamers Club Unlocked member and get the 10% bonus?
Any video game section employee should be able to set you up with the GCU membership. It cost $15 and comes with a year subscription of @Gamer magazine. It will also get you a 10% bonus on trade ins and 10% off of used games (Make sure to point it out to the blue shirt doing your trade-in though as it is easy for them to skip, and they are still new to it). It can take 48 hours (or more) for GCU to show up on your Reward Zone membership.

Can I use my Best Buy gift card to purchase Amazon Kindle Gift Cards or Visa Gift Cards?
Yes, although some employees may not be aware of this and incorrectly refuse to do so. Visa Gift Cards have a $200 limit and a $6 activation fee. Amazon Gift Cards are available in $25, $50 and $100 depending on your store selection. IL does not sell Amazon Gift Cards. Yes, Kindle Gift Cards are good for anything on Amazon.

The value on the site doesn't match the store, why?
Sometimes the page may not update immediately. This is fairly rare though. The store's trade-in values are definitive though, so what they say is what you get. 99.99% of the time they will match up.

The value on the iPhone app is way off, why?
The app sucks for updating values (and some games simply don't show up), don't rely on it.

The game I want to trade isn't on the site, what gives?
While rare, there have been some games recently not showing up in the online estimator. You can always check in-store to see if the price is in their system and simply not online, but that is unlikely to be the case. When Best Buy doesn't have a game on file they can offer $1 as a generic SKU, but that's it. New releases appear to be added on Tuesday evenings. Many new releases are taking upwards of a week or more to be added to the site.

When do trade-in values update?
No one knows for sure, but major updates seem to come on Sunday and Tuesday nights (or at least have in the past). Sometimes an update will happen randomly, such as when GameStop has an advertised sale for a game well below Best Buy's trade in price.

What will be the TIV of Game X tomorrow/next week / next month/ etc
Nobody knows.

If I locked in a trade online, and the value drops, will I still get the locked in value when I mail it in?
Yes. You will get the locked in TIV as long as the item is received within 14 days of you locking it in (and the item is in the condition you described it as).

Can you lock in the price online then trade it in-store?
No.

Is there a limit to how many games I can trade in?
Officially, Best Buy only accepts 3 copies of a game, per system (i.e. you could trade in 3 copies of a game for Xbox, 3 copies for PS3 and 3 for Wii). This is for sure the online policy, but it varies in stores. Some people have reported being banned for trading in more than 3 copies of games, others have done so frequently without issue. Obviously it is YMMV, but do so at your own risk.

Can I trade game disc only, or do I need the case and manuals, too?
Best Buy accepts disc only games (for the same value as complete games). The trade in will take longer though as the employee will have to look up the games individually.

Can I trade in games that say "Not for Resale" on the back?
Yes, since the only thing that matters is the disc. Some employees will fight this though, and in that case, just trade the game in as disc-only.

Does Best Buy accept game hardware?
Currently Best Buy only accepts various versions of the Nintendo DS in store, but word is that will change soon.

Does the **% bonuses apply to game hardware?
No, games only.

When I do a in-store trade, I am asked: to be fingerprinted, to have my photo taken, how much I weigh, etc. What's the deal?
Pawn shop laws regulating trade-ins and resale of used goods varies from state to state or city to city. It is not Best Buy's rule, and varies from store to store depending on where you live. At a minimum you'll likely need a state ID.

I went to a store to do a trade-in and they asked for a Best Buy receipt. WTF?
Some stores are required to have receipts to accept trade-ins, again this is due to local Pawn shop laws and could vary from city to city. You can always check if the store(s) near you require a receipt on Best Buy's trade-in site.

Can I trade sealed games?
Yes. You must present your receipt for the sealed games you are trading in. It is ok if the purchase was made from another store. You do run the risk of drawing extra attention to yourself as trading in sealed products is often a sign of theft. Do not be surprised if this is questioned by an employee, or you are asked to leave, open the items and return.

Just wanted to mention to those of you who are certain that manuals and cover art aren't necessary for trade in because of 'corporate policy', the individual stores have their "trade in guidelines" on the website. Here is what my store says:

No Receipt Required: Visit BestBuy.com/TradeIn to see if your item is eligible for trade-in and get an estimate for what your device may be worth. Then, gather any original accessories, manuals and packaging for your item and come in today to instantly get your gift card.

We are sure because we've done it. I've traded in over 200 disk only ps2 games.

First off, Best Buy accepts trade ins for more than just video games, including a lot of electronics, so this is a pretty general statement. Second, it doesn't say they are required, but it certainly does seem to encourage bringing them along with the item you are trading for obvious reasons; it is easier to sell a used game or whatever if you have the complete package.

Hope the trade in system is working today, have a huge trade to do. Luckily none of my TIVs dropped... so far.

does anybody know how much credit BB would give for a pink DSi in good condition? I was thinking about trading in my daughters pink DSi and get a 3DS tomorrow since they have the $50 giftcard promo starting tomorrow when you buy a 3DS.

Thanks

I thought BB was on top of this type of shenanigans?

Btw, DudeImGodly, if you need something to worry about, I think it's more of this type of nonsense: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9150190&postcount=129 that will ruin the trade ins. Not the returning of new games without a receipt, which BB won't allow anyway.

They should hire a PI to track each trade-in account and follow them 24/7, so they can tackle that ass hole right when he's standing in line to do the return.

Sup guys. I'm going to trade in a couple games today to take advantage of that extra 50% trade in value. Am I able to return the game and keep what I paid for, or will they deduct the 50% trade in value? Thanks.

Just did a solid $400 trade in with the purchase of Goldeneye Reloaded. Also had to do a return of some pre-owned games I bought online with that B2G1 sale last weekend where the 3rd (free) game was cancelled cause the store didn't have it.

they arent at my local bb traded in some stuff a day or so ago 1 in a sleve and a few in gs cases all were accepted at full value.

Dammit still no trade in value for Super Mario 3D Land but yet they got a trade in value for Resident Evil Racoon City which doesn't come out till next year.

So I finally got around to doing my test trade-in at my local BB and no problem trading in a game so I'm not banned (yay!) lol. That was a bit of a scare... anywho it goes back to what we should be aware of in that the trade-in bans are probably at the store/manager level.
Go ahead and put yourself on the watch list, brah...real smart.
 if they really do have that, I wouldn't mind being on the watch list. Sorry you didn't realize I was joking.

It looks like Best Buy lower the bonus to 40% when you purchase a $39.99 game or more for this week. This new offer expires on 12/10.

Just tried to order through my phone and it is showing $79.98 for 3 copies of Saints Row. I would get it, but I already have it. But seems like a good deal with the 40% trade in offer. So SR would trade in for $35.

yeah i was deathly scared to go yesterday and do my trade-ins (thanks to the stories on this thread i haven't traded in games in over 3 weeks -_-) but upon doing so I discovered I am home-free and on top of it, I have fans in the gaming dept i didn't even know about (several of the employees like me, even the ones that just started working there 2 weeks ago)

yeah i wouldn't do this if i were you...

Just sit back and wait for the people who buy three saints rows and then trade two right back and post here next week about being banned. Guess this means that Saints Row TIV is going to tank this week sometime.

Looks like I was among those who got blacklisted. Went to trade my remaining games yesterday, but when the trade-in guy inputted my ID into the system *BAM!* I kind of expected it to be honest — what with all the games I've trade in and credits I've amassed, it was inevitable. You can't play with fire and not get burned I guess. Still hurts, but I'm proud of what I've accomplished there:

I try to help the consumers make up their mind when I'm there doing my trade in and also persuaded some to make a purchase they otherwise would not have made.
I've boosted their trade in numbers to considerable heights (as I've been told) bringing them in top 2 positions in the region, and as well as their pre-orders.
I am sitting in roughly $40 in pre-orders that I don't plan on returning.
I'd say every gaming and majority of the staff including the assistant GM know me although to this day they still haven't gotten my number down...

Anyway best of luck to those still able to trade. With all the TIVs going down, I don't know how long BBY can stay in the game trading business, but who am I to predict the future.

With all this talk of getting banned cant believe I haven't yet, but really hoping I don't try today and they wont let me. I remember trading in like 9 copies of Two Worlds 2 when there was a good flip between GS and BB

Dumb question but if I trade in a bunch of games for 1 game. Do they give you a gift card or just subtract it from the game you are purchasing. And, last question is,what if I end up getting a game that I traded in games for credit. Could I return that game I bought with the trade in games and get a gift card? I'm trying to find a way to get kindle gift cards to put it towards Star Wars collectors edition lol

You shouldn't try to return the game you buy, so get something you want. And trading in a game towards itself will raise red flags so I would advise against that.

You tell them you want a game thats over $39.99. They will then give you the bonus 40% to your trade in base, with the total being applied to a gift card. You are then supposed to buy a game $39.99 and up with any difference in price remaining on the gift card. You could return the game later and get the credit back, but DO NOT, as there is the very real possibility best buy will discontinue the promo as a result of this shenanigans. Not to mention you may raise some flags on your account.

I cant tell how much in this thread is an actual warning or just a fear tactic to stop people from abusing the system. If it is just fear tactics then I am impressed. I follow all the rules and only do a few trades but even I am worried about being banned.

Will the extra 40% promo ring up automatically? Is there anything I can tell the employees besides, "I'm supposed to get an extra 40% trade in credit when you purchase a title $39.99 and up..."

Looking to buy Saints Row 3 this week if this works out right.

It's a button they have to click just before the end of the trade transaction that applies the 40% bonus. So just keep an eye on the screen to be sure they're clicking it and you should be good.

Just did some Saint's Row and some other games. I'm not gonna return the Uncharted CE but I'm trying to get that Batman from AMZ lol

Just got back from a trip from Best Buy. Traded in $108 worth of old games after the 40% and 10%. Initially grabbed 3 SR3 for 360. Then left and went to target with the girl and baby and once we were done stopped back into Best Buy. Traded back 2 SR3 for $75 after the 40% and 10% and grabbed Skyrim and a $50 Kindle card. So SR3, Skyrim and $50 to Amazon for $15 out of pocket and some old games I had beat

Just wanted to chime in and also say that I love BestBuy's trade-in values and promos. Hopefully I'll have enough old games lying around to shave a chunk off of that Pink 3DS bundle this week.

Again, just fair warning for everyone; buying a game and then trading it in (at the same store no less) the same day is likely to raise flags. You'll probably get away with it, just saying it for the sake of it.

I did get my copy of Saints price adjusted down to $40 with the sale price which was nice.

I'm planning on picking up a 3DS tomorrow and want to minimize out of pocket cost by trading in a few games. Will I be able to get the 40% bonus added toward the purchase of the 3DS? My guess is ymmv but maybe someone has tried it?

More than that, it was actually listed as a $59.99 game in the weekly ad. The very reason I ran went out of my way to get the price-adjustment today just to be safe.

also, to the person who asked about buying the 3DS instead of a game, I have to imagine that if you walked in with some games to trade and said that you were going to buy one, could you get the 40% bonus that most employees would be more than willing to hook that up. I mean, you're spending far more than $39.99 in gaming. Obviously, it is YMMV cause they could be dicks, but I'd be surprised.
So for 108 credit and 15 cash he got a 39.99game, a 59.99 game, and 50 amazon credit

Saving about 25 on 150, or 16%
Yup, but the nice part about it was that the games were definately not worth $108. Instead of grabbing the kindle card and Skyrim on the 2nd trip I almost grabbed Halo: Ce anniversary and dead rising 2 OTR with another SR3 free, but I grabbed the amazon card to be able to grab diapers and baby stuff to keep the lady happy
