ooohh - good call on "Guero" I forgot about that one but I love it. I need to check out "Guerolito" soon... I also have the other Bright Eyes release from this year (Digital Ash?) but I didn't like it that much - it was OK though. Maybe I should check out I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning...

Top 5 best, in no order:

The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
My Morning Jacket - Z
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Dane Cook - Retaliation

VNV Nation - Matter + Form if ya like that kind of thing.

Mainstream, I'd probably say Shakira oddly enough. Not much out anymore that I care for.
I don't think many people knew about it...I could be wrong.
I'm not critisizing, I'm just asking. I knew about it for a while, but maybe that's because I watch AS a lot and heard about it quite a bit here.

Oh, well, then I guess because it was a sleeper for me since I hadn't heard about it anywhere. I watch AS only once in a while and must not have posted much here when people talked about it. I will say one thing, I am happy I listened to it, especially since it got me into MF Doom.

They also released a live album, "Motion Sickness" not long ago. It's pretty good if you ask me, but I may be a bit biased.

I have to go with The Decemberists' Picaresque. It's not only my favorite album of the year, but one of my favorites of all time.

Ok, I have small children, and I'm totally out of the music loop. Last grown up cd I bought was Stephen Kellogg, nice buy, I might add.

But Kanye West's music, is it really THAT great? I'm not really into the whole hip hop/rap, I'm cool because I'm a thug junk. But I worked with the guy's mom for almost ten years until she decided to become his manager (poor guy, her organizational skill bite and she can't use a computer, hope he's getting second opinions) so I'd actually like to listen to some of his stuff, considering I remember him best as a 14 year old.

If I don't really like hip hop, will I want to throw it out the window of a moving vehicle? Will it make me long for the Wiggles? God, no.

Im gonna have to say:

1. Beck- Guero/Guerolito combo (i heard some Guerolito at a friend's house. Out of the 5 songs i heard (which were my 5 favorite from Guero) 4 were good, Ghost Range (E-Pro), meh)

2. Ok Go- Oh No (I bought OKGO's original CD back in 7th grade after hearing Get over It on Madden. It was not my usual thing, but it grew on me; now 3 years later im listening to thier new cd nonstop)

3. Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better (Somehow, i feel like I'm going to get flamed for this; I like Franz, and the new CD is great, but hopefully they will try something new with their next album)

4. Dane Cook- Retaliation (Wow, some of the funniest stuff of the year. Even though you can't really listen to the same comedy cd a lot (jokes get old), this still deserves to be on the list simply because it could get many more mainstream people buying comedy cds. Hopefully, by this time next year some company will wise up, find some good talent, and we can see a few comedians on the top selling lists)

5. Reel Big Fish- We're Not Happy Until You're Not Happy (Not a lot to say... It's Reel Big Fish!)

Pfft, I already had a thread like this xD. Oh well.

Charge!! - Aquabats

Runner up:
demo - hellogoodbye
A fever you can't sweat out - Panic at the Disco
Silent Alarm - Bloc Party
Hawthorne Heights - The Silence of Black and White
That CD came out in the middle of 2004, unless you count the rerelease.

If you don't like any hip-hop/rap then it's a reasonable assumption you won't like Kanye West.

i don't have a #1 favorite, but here are my ten favorite records of the year, in alphabetical order:

ryan adams - "jacksonville city nights" (though i also enjoyed "cold roses" and "29")
architecture in helsinki - "in case we die"
boris - "akuma no uta"
giant drag - "hearts and unicorns"
iron and wine - "woman king"
metric - "live it out"
pelican - "the fire in our throats will beckon the thaw"
queens of the stone age - "lullabies to paralyze"
maria taylor - "11:11"
torche - "torche"

that's just off the top of my head, so i'm sure i'm forgetting something that i really liked, and i also didn't get the chance to hear everything i wanted to yet from this year.

surprisingly, i could probably come up with another ten records that i thought were pretty darn good this year.

First, his music isn't that great. It is good but a lot of people treat him like the second coming of Jesus, which he is not. The worst part is that Kanye actually believes he's that good and acts like he's the king of the world. Kanye can do some good beats, but if you take something he does the beat for and someone else (like Jay-Z) does the vocals and compare that song to something Kanye does the vocals on there is no comparison. Kanye should have just stayed a producer. You might actually like some of his stuff though, he is in no way shape or form a thug nor does he try to be one (just look at how he dresses, he puts even the whitest white guy to shame). He only had one song that was about "money rims and hoes" and that was mostly just poking fun at materialistic rap.

Here's my fav's that are out from this year:

Mindless Self Indulgence - You'll Rebel to Anything/only disappointing thing was how short this thing is.

Rev Run - Distortion/Another short but sweet cd

Dream Theater - Octavarium

Reggie and The Full Effect - Songs not to get Married to

Arch Enemy - Doomsday Machine/you can't go wrong with a woman fronted metal band

Gym Class Heroes - the papercut chronicles

I made a quick check of amazon and all check out for 2005 release dates
Queens of the Stone Age's "Lullabies to Paralyze".
That probably should have been on my list, though I didn't listen to it as much as the others. Actually, 90% of my listening was dedicated to The White Stripes, Shakira, and Bright Eyes.

Kanye needs a good kick in the ass. Perhaps another year without a Grammy will be a big enough hint that he really isn't the best thing since sliced bread.
Queens of the Stone Age's "Lullabies to Paralyze".
Ooh...very good one. I didn't like the previous album too much, but this one reminded me a lot of their earlier stuff and was just great.

And I think that cuts it for me. Might have a couple others,b ut that's really it.

See, now that's what makes me crack up at him being a 'rap' star. Guy's the most white bred kid I knew of my coworkers. I remember when his mom gave him a year for this 'music thing' because he wasn't doing that great in school.

For the record, I do like some hip hop, but not the gangsta stuff. Although Jay-Z I do like because he actually goes with the melodies, not against them, which most rappers do. Totally gone off topic. Maybe I'll just download some and see.

In no order:

Alanis Morrissette - Jagged Little Pill Unplugged
White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Beck - Guero CE
Green Day - Bullet in a Bible

Pretty lackluster year overall, really.

Exodus- Shovel Head Kill Machine
High on Fire - Blessed Black Wings
The new Rolling Stones is pretty good too.
Arcade Fire - Funeral

M.I.A is also a good call.
Arcade Fire is last year.

My favorite of 2005:

New Order - Waiting For The Sirens' Call

others I liked pretty well this year:
Coldplay - X&Y
Fisherspooner - Odyssey
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Mindless Self Indulgence- You'll Rebel To Anything

I really like this album.

I've heard a lot about The White Stripes, Beck's new album, and Panic! At The Disco, I'll have to check them out.
System of a Down - Hypnotize and Mezmerize
That album sucked, i wonder what happened to them i mean their first one was a classic but then they come out with this garbage.

1st. As I Lay Dying " Shadows are security"

2 nd Symphony in Peril " The Whores Trophy"

3 rd Between the Buried and me "Alaska"

4 th Darkest hour " undoing ruin"

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned

Anthony Hamilton - Ain't Nobody Worryin

Great soulful sound. From what i've heard Jamie Foxx's sounds like a contender, but the top so far is:

Anthony Hamilton - Ain't Nobody Worryin
Kanye West - Late Registration
Gorillaz - Demon Days

#1-The Mars Volta-Frances the Mute
#2-Andrew Bird-The Mysterious Production of Eggs
#3-Sufjan Stevens-Illinoise
#4-Dream Theater-Octavarium
#5-My Morning Jacket-Z

This year in music was garbage. I hope next year is better.
