Best deal on PS3

Mine just got an error code and doesn't read blu's anymore, so I'm in the same boat as you. (40GB fat, 4+ years old, btw) I'll offer my advice one what I'm basically gonna do. E3 is 5 weeks away, and a price drop seems inevitable, so that's the smart thing right there, to wait it out. Plus with PSN down for another week or so most likely, remember you can't recover your account unless you have it backed up on something else. In my position, I don't see anything to do really but to wait it out for Sony to get their act together. Besides, with the massive PR nightmare they face right now, they may be more likely to "make good" with the public in the next week or two, and maybe bring the price drop sooner. If you still want one ASAP, it looks like it's gonna be dry this week and next, as far as what I've seen in the ads.

Literally, the same thing happened to my PS3 this week. It looks like Toys R Us has the best deal this week:

"Buy any PS3 system get a $50gc + $20psn card free"
My launch 60gb just got ylod, is there any god deals going on for the system?
Yeah, the best deal would be to repair it because YLODs are just as easily fixed as RRODs.

:applause: THIS is the correct answer to the OP's question. If you're not tech savvy enough, simply take your PS3 to a PC shop and have them do a 'reflow' of the thermal paste on the system. That typically fixes most YLOD issues.

As for disc reading errors, if it's just that the system is struggling to read games/movies, then your lens may be dirty/dusty. This happens from dust/animal dander/if anyone in the house smokes.

Open the system(since it's outta warranty anyway) and clean the lens manually. If that fails to alleviate the reading issues, then you may need a new laser.

I believe they're around $70 or so nowadays. MUCH cheaper than sending to Sony for around $150 or so and being without a PS3 for a while or buying a new one for $300.

This is how Sony ended up with so many millions of PS2's sold last gen cuz people got the Disc Read Error issue on their system and instead of trying to fix it themselves(which most times was a dirty laser you could clean manually:roll:) people would buy a new system.

Thanks for the tips IATCG, but my disc read error went beyond a simple dusting. The drive is definately done for(it no longer reads DVDs or PS1 games any longer, in addition to blu's). After checking some repair shops in the area that wanted between 110-140, I settled on paying Sony the $99 to fix it. I know I won't have it for a couple weeks, but it's still better than getting a new one, because I prefer the look of my old fat system. I basically found the parts to fix it for around $70-80(before shipping), but I'm not gonna even attempt to do it myself, just in case there's something else bad going on under the hood I'm not aware of and it's not simply replacing the blu-ray drive. Of course this would happen when we're on the verge of getting a month of free PS+, but that's another story. I kinda wish it was a YLOD because those seem to be getting fixed for a cheaper rate around here.

So, ghettotwan, you might want to run thru the repair process on Sony's website as well. They will tell you how much the repair from them is gonna cost before you enter your payment method, so if you think it's too much, just cancel and close it out. For me, it came down to a cost + hassle scenario, and with the network still down, I didn't want to hesitate any longer and just went ahead and pulled the trigger on this.

Amazon's matching the $50 credit today on a PS3. Toys R US deal is a little better, but I think an Amazon credit might be more useful.
