Best deal on Widescreen HD-ready TV

Thanks to everyone who has posted advice throughout this topic. I am almost ready to make my decision, but figured I'd ask for an opinion. First off, the TV my new one would be replacing is very old. Since I am going to be replacing a TV, I figured I'd go with an HDTV. This TV will be primarily used for gaming. In particular, the Xbox 360 and PS3 (when they come out, and when I can actually find a 360). I've been reading up on the subject, and many people have said that the 360 looks better on an HDTV, but not much better. My question is, do you think that the extra cost of an HDTV is worth it just for what I am going to be using it for? If you were in my situation, would you buy a new standard TV or an HDTV? I know these questions are stricly opinion, and I know that everyone values things differently, but any opinions will help me greatly.

If you will be gaming on a PS3, buying a HDTV will definitely be worth it as there are HDMI outputs on the PS3. It'll look ****ing nice.

I should also add, if you are actually going to buy a new TV and you are going to be using it a lot for future gaming on a PS3, the only tv you should even consider is a widescreen HDTV.

I recently purchased a 30" Samsung HD Slim Fit or whatever it's called and gaming in HD looks a hell of a lot better than gaming on a regular tv. Believe me, you will notice the difference. If you are a hardcore gamer you owe it to yourself to pick up and HDTV especially if you are getting a 360 or PS3. Just think, this tv should last you at least through this generation of consoles and by then you have more than gotten your money's worth in entertainment value from gaming in HD. Thats just my opinion though bro, good luck in your decision and have a good time.
If you're talking about non-HD material, yes, non-HD stuff looks like crap on HDTV's. Just something you'll have to deal with. It's not the TV, but the fact that you're taking a 480i image and scaling it up to 720p or 1080i (depending on the HDTV).
Thanks a bunch for the info dachrier, it is much appreciated. I was wondering why the picture was looking a little off, take care man.

Is there any way to scale the image down for watching tv?

Nope...HDTV crt's only display 1080i and 480p.

chaarlieee and Pratt75, thanks for the info. I've decided to go with the HDTV after realizing just how much of a difference it will make. Once again, thanks for the input, I needed that little boost of reassurance to help make this purchase easier.

No problem THPS, do you have any idea of what you might be getting and are you getting a 360 or PS3?

BTW, I just got DOA 4 today and it looks really really good in HD.

costco usually has some sweet deals on their hd tvs. their big coupon book just came out and there are some good prices but on brands i've never heard of...

I haven't really made up my mind on the TV yet. I'm hoping to find one for my entertainment center, but size will be an issue. If necessary, I can always modify the entertainment center or just put the TV somewhere else, but I figured I'd see if I can find one that fits first. As for next-gen gaming, I plan on purchasing all three consoles, so I think I'll be getting some good use out of this TV.

COMPUSA has the 26" Olevia for $499 (NO REBATES!) 1/1 and 1/2 only. I'm tempted to get this...nice price. Half the cost of namebrand LCD's

Yeah, most stores are OOS on the Olevia at CompUSA now....I may still go check, only a few hours left. I know there are TWO models of the Olevia...the HVE and HVX, with the latter being better.

After much searching, I think I am almost ready to make my purchase. During my search, I had a hard time finding a HDTV that would fit into the space I will be putting it in. Most HDTVs were around 2" too wide. Anyway, I finally found a Toshiba 26" HDTV that fits. It is from BestBuy.com, but of course, none of my B&M BB stores have it available. I was browsing a local electronic store today, and found the same TV at BB at the store for $580. Everything looks good to me, but I was just wondering if anyone can give me opinions on it before I decide to buy it. Here is the link to it at BB: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...CategoryId=pcmcat31800050031&id=1097582050451

Any advice/opinions of the TV would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for everyone's help so far.

I just bought the Toshiba 26HF85 at the local electronics store yesterday. The tag in store said $570, but their website showed it as $488, and sure enough, they gave it to me for $488. It seems like a good TV so far. I just have to adjust the settings on it to my liking. Thanks again to everyone who helped me with this purchase. Your help was greatly appreciated and made this purchase much easier.

Well, I now have a Samsung 30" slimfit widescreen HDTV (Built in HDTV tuner).. Its pretty good but having a tech. come out to fix some Geometry and White blur (if a dark object has a bright background, it bleeds over.. happens on both sides of the tube)

I am looking for a LCD TV that either supports HDTV or is HDTV capable. I am looking for one that is around 30" Is there any good deals right now?

Any help will be appreciated.

What are you looking to spend? CompUSA will have the Syntax Olevia for $499 ($200 rebate) starting tomorrow. I believe Circuit City has a Polaroid LCD for $699. These are 26" though. The next jump is usually to 32".

I do not want to spend more than 900 dollars and I am not a fan of Syntax Olevia. I would prefer a 32 inch but anywhere from 30"-42" would be fine.

Good luck finding a 32" for around $900. You can check Best Buy for a Westinghouse. You will NOT get a namebrand for that price. There may be a few exceptions here and there, but nothing spectaular. Unless you start looking for a TUBE or RPTV.
There's a 32" LCD TV at Fry's on sale for $799 through tuesday the 10th.
I saw that, decent price. I'm hoping to find a 26" for a GREAT price though....any suggestions? I want to use it as a PC monitor also
