Just remember, when you buy a Dell, you're, uh, buying a Dell. The hardware might seem good for what you pay for, but this comes at the expense of other things. For example:
- you won't get a real Windows CD, and your Windows license will most likely be locked to your system's BIOS. You may not even get a restore CD, and if so, your hard drive will have a hidden "restore" partition that steals some of your drive space.
- Dell is notorious for scumware. You will have lots of little apps pre-installed that have nasty hooks all over the system, and can be difficult to uninstall.
- Dell has used non-standard parts. I haven't found any evidence that they've stopped doing this. The power supply and motherboard are very Dell-specific, and if they break, third-party replacements are often much more expensive than standard ones.
I know at least one person watching this thread wants to buy this for a family member, so you should probably realize that there's a good chance you'll be fixing the damn thing if you go with Dell. I would suggest buying from a local shop, a small mail-order place, or getting a Mac Mini.
