Best Final Fantasy for FF Noob?

never played a FF game in my life. what would be a good one to start with? i like advanced wars, so i was thinking tactics, or i was just going to wait until FFIII was available for DS.

btw the only systems i have are the DS and xbox.
 
Start with the series' roots and get Dawn of Souls.

But just so you know, you might wanna check out a faqs or get a strategy guide to get from one place to the other because the game gives absolutely no clue as to where to go next, and that'll be very crucial since about 40% through the game becomes very open-ended.
 
If you only have a DS and an Xbox, then the only option is Final Fantasy IV Advance. It's a great game, but I don't think it was as good as some of the entries later in the series.

As for Dawn of Souls... yeah, it's good, but I wouldnt' say it's a good introduction due to the pretty much nonexistant storyline.
 
I guess you could go with Tactics Advance or 4. I feel awkward recommending 1+2 for some reason.

Or if you're new to RPGs, you'll love the two GBA Fire Emblems, which is basically Advance Wars but better, and with RPG elements like leveling.
 
well tactics seems like the natural leap since you like advance wars. but its not as "final fantasy" as other entries, it really just kinda has the name slapped on there. id say pick up final fantasy iv. and then iii when it comes out, and eventually v and vi are coming to the gba, so youll be able to enjoy those soon enough as well.

Anyway... I would go with FF1&2 (I haven't played 2, but 1 is where I started and it's the very beginning, so no reason to avoid it) or FFIV - that one will start you off where the second generation of FF players began, and would lead very nicely to FFVI.
 
I'd suggest Mystic Quest on the easy element but if you want more of a challenge get #1 which has just as good gameplay that's not so easy. I would've bought it again for GBA but they dumbed it down too much, not giving you an option between easy and regular which is bullshit considering there's new content. fuck you Square, you lost a sale because of that.

With a PS2 you could play pretty much every FF game made (except FF3 which is coming out for DS)

Which is fine, but the statement implied that FFVII+ were the only FFs needing attention.
 
My first FF game was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I enjoyed it. Then I bought FF I & II. I have yet to finish FF I.

The only one you need is VI. That said IV was FF2 on SNES so it's kind of a good precursor to VI (which was FF3 on SNES). Seeing as how VI isn't out yet, go for IV. I haven't seen it bug up and I've put about 12 hours into it so far.

Castlevania = Final Fantasy? I'm sorry but no way. Unless you're talking about equipping and using items, the gameplay is much, much different. (Jumping?)
 
Final fantasy 7. Get it on the PC if you are too lame to get a playstation. The first game should be one of the later ones because dawn of souls blew ass, and generally it isn't a good idea to let something that's 20 years old determine whether you are going to play any other games. Final fantasy 6 is probably the best though. Play 7 and 6

I liked Mystic Quest when I played it years ago. I can't help but think that it didn't age as well as the other 16-bit Final Fantasies though.
