Best NES/SNES Clone Models and Portables?
What are the best NES/SNES Clone models and portable models?
A friend just picked up the Hyperkin Supaboy (Portable SNES)... it is pretty sweet, but they do have some upfront quality issues. It appears that if it works out of the box it is great, but not all of them work out of the box. On his first unit controller port 1 didn't work, but wasn't a problem on the one that he exchanged it for.

Yeah, I'm in the market for a NES/SNES clone too! More an NES clone similar to an NES Toploader though.

I saw a clone at a thrift store that was different from the Yobo version for $20, but passed at the time.

I have my original NES toaster for those games that aren't compatible/have issues with clones like Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
PSP/Go.

Just kidding... not really.
If I could find one for less than $60, I'd go the route of buying a PSP Go. Have that thing connected to a T.V., you'd hold the PSP Go as player 1 and player 2 controls with a Dual Shock 3. It works with PSone games, not sure about SNES or NES games though.

Had ones of these

Sound wasn't perfect, and it stopped working after about 2 months. I got it for 20 and it came with two controllers that were actually better than several 3rd party controllers from back in the day.

Ive had my retro duo for well over a year now. Works great.
The build quality on the controllers it came with were crap though.

I have the same and like it quite well. Definitely appreciate the shelf space it saves.

I have to ask the obvious question. We've seen units that combo Genesis and SNES and NES. Why haven't we seen any of these that do PC-Engine as well? It seems like the time has passed where they should be able to sell those legally as well.
I'm also kinda wondering why we haven't seen anything CD related in terms of clones.

Popularity, I'd imagine. The TG-16 tanked and the 16-bit era CD stuff didn't do well at all.
You sell wiggy shells?
Hopefully by Xmas :)
But it sold well in Japan wiggy and had a lot of popular games there as well as for the CD.
The TG16? Don't think it matters. We would be the largest market for a product like that, and I've gotta imagine that there just isn't the interest here for it like the Genesis or SNES.

The CD systems didn't do well enough anywhere to warrant such a device.

I own a FC3 plus. It comes with a light gun and 2 controllers. It will NOT play the SMB/Duck Hunt NES cartridge that came with the original NES hardware. But it will play many Genesis, NES, and SNES games.

You can find a good review detailing the pro and cons of this clone console on amazon.

I just got the Retron 3 in the mail and it works great. Allows use of all the orginal controllers and from what I can tell it plays all games. I've tried castlvania 3 and star fox and both played fine. I know those are two of the harder ones to play on the clone models.

It's on amazon for $50 with good reviews. It feels like a piece of junk but works great for me. Also sega and snes games on s video look pretty good and to me the sound plays fine.

3 in 1 SNES/ NES/ Genesis RetroN 3 Gaming Console (Charcoal Gray) is on sale at Grab The Games today, i use it myself works awesome for SNES not so great for NES
What will Retron 4 offer?
According to early reports, it's going to have its own GUI frontend baked into the firmware, and it will allow for HDMI output. I haven't heard any details on the scaling options it will provide, but hopefully there will be a few.

In terms of general design it is going to be very similar to the Retron 3, covered in ports for the original controllers. It is also going to have a slot for Gameboy Advance games.

The only clone system I've used is the NEX, and it's worked for me fine for most titles.

I am very much looking forward to finding out more on the Retron 4 though.

I have the retro duo and the retron 3. Here are my thoughts on both:
Retro duo: With a simple mod the horrible NES audio can be fixed to sound more like a real NES system. The SNES side is perfect but the colors are SLIGHTLY dull (no big deal for me)
Retron 3: the SNES audio distorts with certain sounds and music. A good example is the into music for Out of this world. The Genesis side also has slight sound issues: some sounds are noticeably too loud. A good example is the Sonic jump sound. The NES audio and also sounds slightly off but tolerable if your not a purist. The color pallet also seems a bit off.

If you play a lot of the big three retro games go with the retron 3. If you're just looking for a SNES and/or NES only go for the retro duo. I recommend researching the sound fix first though.
If you can wait I would see how the retron 5 performs.

the yobo is a good clone. it played almost everything flawlessly. exceptions were castlevania 3, paperboy and bad news baseball.

but I've also heard that every system has a slightly different compatibility..

the best function of the system was being able to cut the bottom off the heavy 1985 carts(ie any of the original black label games) and use them as an adapter to play famicon games.

finally got some use out of urban champions or whatever the hell that game was called..
