My wife loves RPG's, and she just got a new PS2 (we used to have one, but got rid of it). I already bought her FFXII, but I am looking to get her some more RPG's. Any suggestions?

Tales of the Abyss
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzuonha vs The Soulless Army
I say it in every PS2 RPG thread and I'm going to say it again: Radiata Stories
QFT

Other excellent games:

Disgaea
Star Ocean Till the End of Time
Kingdom Hearts 1,2

Before I give you my opinion, I'd like to say that you scored on that kind of wife. I'd kill for a girlfriend that knew what the abbreviation "RPG" meant, much more a girl that plays them. And I'm not even bad looking!

Anyway, FF12 was great. Star Ocean is a decent recommendation, I recommend Shadow of the Collossus. It's not an RPG per say, but it's definitely a dark version of what Zelda would be, definitely gets you thinking and keeps you at the edge of your seat.

Dragon Quest 8 is a bit of a classic style RPG. It's really nice if you want a nostalgic reminder of what it was like to play RPG's on SNES back in 1995. If you're looking for more urbanized titles, the Xenosaga collection is decent. Episode 1 is a bit hard to swallow due to the dull and long lasting cutscenes, but 2 and 3 try to make up for it a bit. Suikoden 5 is good, don't touch 4. 3 was better than 4 and 5 so if you don't have those, get them starting with 3.

Stay away from FFX-2. I know you said the last "3 years" and FFX-2 was 2002-ish if I recall correctly, but in case your fingertips graze the case by chance, throw it in a fire and rid the world of its evil. (Prayer and goat sacrifices optional, but if you'd like to sacrifice a virgin, you can PM me and I'll aquiesce your request.)

Also a title no one mentioned, Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. (I think there's a package deal going on for both in the same box, which is a good deal because DDS 1 is hard to find.) A very good game that's under the radar if you ask me.

All in all, that's about 300 hours of good RPG-ing you can throw her way. I just don't see how you can fit in QT with all that gaming. ;)

Hmm, let me think

2004
Phantom Brave
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time

2005
Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana
Dragon Quest VIII
Makai Kingdom
Radiata Stories
Romancing SaGa (Not a game for everyone, but I enjoyed it)
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
Stella Dues
Suikoden IV (Some may like it, like me, but most may not)
Suikoden Tactics (It's not that bad, and it's only $8 this week at CC)
Wild Arms: Alter Code F
Xenosaga Episode II (The game isn't for everyone, but I liked it, for the story alone).
YS: The Ark of Naphitism(sp)

2006
.Hack//G.U.
Atelier Iris 2: The Azoth of Destiny
Final Fantasy XII
Grandia III (The battle system is one of the best, but the game might be too hard and the story isn't anything new really)
Kingdom Hearts II
Shadow Hearts: From the New World
Suikoden V
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss
Wild Arms 4
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
Xenosaga Episode III
The big list you had earlier was better
:) But it was a damn mess. When I copied it, it pasted in a table, but when I posted it removed all the formating.

For this link just go up to the top and click where is says Upcoming and change it to released.

I agree with you, other than the FFX-2 crack. I don't know why I feel obligated to stick my neck out and defend that game every time it's brought up, but here I am. I had way more fun playing X-2 than X--I just kept thinking, "This is what FFX would have been like without the shitty story and with a battle system that's kind of fun."

If you can get past the Charlie's Angels, let's-play-dress-up style, you should at least give it a shot. It's light-hearted, has plenty to do, and is many times more entertaining than a lot of RPGs out there.

Man, I totally agree with you on FFX-2. I don't know why that game gets so much crap. I think it's actually "gasp" fun.

Final Fantasy X-2 is really good, but it's such a huge departure from what people were expecting that it had to get a lot of shit.

It's the cheese. Stripped of the cheese, it woudl be downright bad-ass.

I will keep on whoring for the Shadow Hearts series if you like turn based combat that you can't/won't fall asleep during. For non-turn based, I'd suggest Tales of the Abyss.

man I love Shadow Hearts Covenant.

everything about that game was just too good

(except for Lucia, who basically does NOTHING in the entire game)

SH:C is a very easy game, has a lot to do, and has a great story

you can't not enjoy it

I have a girlfriend who plays RPGs exclusively and it isn't bad. She's 5'9" with long red hair too! The only problem is that she won't go and get a damn job...

It was a forced production, as in, "fake".

It'd be the equivalent of Wachowski brothers making Matrix 4 and having it so that Neo wasn't really dead and he found out he can find Trinity in the middle of the ocean in some hidden temple.

It's entirely fake and SE didn't even consider production for it until there was a really high demand for it.

It's not like they left it open ended, a'la Final Fantasy VII. They literally said, "He's dead. The end." And then when people made a fuss/demand, "Oh okay so maybe he isn't dead... He's just almost dead. Almost dead for a thousand years and a ghost, but still not entirely dead. Buy our T-shirts!"

It disgusted me. A lot of Square RPG's left the player hanging on the ending, but they didn't go back and try to make due before.

As far as the "entertainment than other RPG's", well I disagree, because I did in fact play it, but I wanted to vommit honestly.

I'm only 23, but I'm old school. I've been in the pit with RPG's and Squaresoft since back in NES days. I have a tendency to favor the writers of games. For example, if MGS4 was written by Kojima, but his original writing was only implemented up to 50% of the game, I would only really enjoy the first 50% of the game because the rest would feel like someone else trying to take over his work.

That's what FFX-2 is to me. It's a force-fed sequel of an already rather bland and cheesy original to begin with. FFX... Hard to swallow. FFX-2? Hey guys, I already have a full stomach.

I don't recall the literal, "He's dead. The end."

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and many share it, but watch out with the Wachowski brothers analogy. Your views mean so much less when you prove you have zero taste. I'm only kidding, but seriously, The Matrix 4? If you want a forced production, look no further than the first sequel. The original Matrix was a fluke of M. Night Shyamalan proportions.

I will also recommend Radiata Stories.

It has some of the greatest art direction/atmosphere in history.

The gameplay is short, basic and a little mindless at times, but it's fun, and that's what matters.

I hate when people go with the literal, "If it wasn't said, it's open for discussion" argument.

That argument is a two-way door considering the same thing can be said about Square not leaving it open ended.

Square is infamous for not making sequels, you can't discard that even if Tidus were POSSIBLY still alive, more than enough evidence to kill the argument that it was open ended for a sequel.

The bottom line is, in FFVII it was open ended on whether or not Cloud and Tifa ended up together. In any other FF game, there hasn't been closure between the protagonist and the girl. There was no kiss for Locke and Terra. There was no final showing of Squall and Rinoa together. There was no shot of Zidane and Dagger getting married. The game ended open for imagination. The same thing with FFX.

Money influenced them to take advantage of it for once. That's where the pain started and it continued with Dirge of Cerberus/Advent Children, and will no doubtedly get spoonfed even more.

I hate blind loyalty, and anyone defending FFX-2, Advent Children or Dirge of Cerebus is nothing short of it. >.<
I'm not taking shots at you, I'm just saying it's obvious FFX-2 was a sell out.

Hey, Advent Children was cool. :p

FFX was eh. I loved the battle arena once I got everything unlocked. I beat everything but Nemesis. I keep meaning to get back to him. Blitzball was pretty fun too.

FFX-2 was ok. I couldn't bring myself to play it to 100% completion, but I did beat it. Even just rushing through the story, the end boss was pathetically easy. Its been a long time since I played it, but I remember that the New Game + feature made me nauseous thinking about playing through it again.
