Best time to buy Airline tickets for August?

Family is flying up in August. Sky Harbor (phoenix) to Michigan (GRR).

They are coming up mid August (15th - 25th) and tickets seem to be around $400 per person round trip.

I am just curious if anyone knows other options or a time that maybe deals would pop up?

basically is buying them 6 months or so in advance a smart move or not?

Trying using one of those airline search engines. I think expedia is a good one. They basically pull prices from all the airlines so you can pick the best.
 
In my experience, waiting 2-4 weeks before the flight is the best time to buy tickets. Last year, I planned an October trip from LAX->SFO->LAX. When I checked 4 months before the flight, the price was $220. When I checked 4 weeks before the flight, the price was $90.

But these are just for in-state flights (400 miles one way), so I'm not entirely sure about cross-country flights.

Even so, 6 months seems like tickets would be "full price."
