I'm thinking of furthering my studies there in the near future (within the next 15 months). While the lectures at the University will be in English, I'd like to learn the language as much as I can before getting there.

I know a couple of languages, but none of them are self taught. I need to know what is the most time efficient and effective way to learn German - CDs/books/software, a mixture of all three? I don't have any German speaking friends, so I can't get them to help.

Anyway, any help/advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

Probably the Instant Immersion Line of language CDs. I have the Japanese Deluxe set one but I just haven't had time to use it a lot. I see them in Best Buy all the time.

Get on MSN messenger and find some German chicks to talk to.

Seriously.

Not only will you learn conversational German, they'll prolly help you and you might meet someone who will make your German trip more fun

I use Pimsleur Language Tapes. I've learned to speak German, Japanese, and some Chinese. These tapes teach you the language the same way a child learns - through hearing adults speak, and then copying them.

Very Good series.

Definitely go with Pimsleur. It expensive but worthwhile, and many libraries carry it. Find a good textbook to supplement, and you'll be on your way.

Or starve to death...

Nah. He's not going to starve to death. There are enough Germans who speak English so even if he can't speak a word of German at the beginning, he'll still be able to get by.

Hazuki I was going to suggest exactly that.

Camoor can you offer any suggestions for me? I'm trying to learn Korean and find people around to even do speaking excersizes with online. I know a free website that gives the materials for it so if anyone is interested in learning...
