or
mario land 3d

I got sick of Mario Land 3D after a short amount of time. Some of the levels were hard for me to judge the depth (in real 3D or regular 3D style) so I kept dying.

Well here's how I look at it. Layton is cheaper so doesn't cost as much to buy retail. Which sucks to get digital. However, it has more play time since they give you new puzzles every week or something I think. Least the old ones did. While Mario is more expensive it's more likely to keep its resell value while layton will slowly drop over time. Meaning if you buy Mario and decide your tired of it you can sell it for more than you'll get out of layton. More people love Mario.

With that reasoning I think I'm getting Layton because of the updating puzzles and lower resell value.

No no sorry I ment if you got the physical version of the one you choose not to get the digital of.

IE: If you get Layton digital you go buy mario and resell later
or
If you get Mario you go buy layton for resell later.
Thus the meaning of " Meaning if you buy Mario " the digital versions in question here are free not paid =P

They are both great games and no reason not to own both at some point in time.

Get Super Mario 3D Land as your free game, and track down an older, cheaper Layton game. The newest one is no better than the others. Once you've finished all of the others, get Miracle Mask.

I love the Layton series, but there's no reason to start with Miracle Mask. Curious Village is still my favorite.

Haven't played Layton, but Mario 3D is one of the best 3DS games in terms of utilization of 3D effect, fun factor, and overall challenge. Even after you've beaten every level, there is still the challenge of getting all of the coins. Right up there with the best in the Mario franchise, imo.

go with Mario 3D Land its good entry in the mario franchise and one of the best games (if not the best) on the 3DS. Plus like other people mention the price on mario will always be high look even after being out for years, and with layton it probably drop alot faster and the 1st layton game is alot better imo

I felt like chipping in.

Get Mario 3D Land. One of the best Mario games of all time, heck one of the best platformers of all time. Game really is a 3DS system seller. Layton is a great game, but as an above poster said, Mario will keep its resale value more, but this is also why you should get it for the free download. It will cost you more to buy a separate (most likely physical) copy of the game. Layton you should be able to get relative cheaper later down the line, since its resale value would be lower, so the cost it will require for you to buy it will also be lower. To save money, get the game that is most valuable, cause the other you can get cheap. Reverse logic. LOL. This of course is if you keep your games. If most games you play, then resell, reverse this. But I see myself going back to play Mario 3D Land years from now, so its a game I would not sell, like a Mario 64.

No bad decision here, but I do really recommend Mario. Good luck, enjoy the games.
