BEWARE...the XBOX Dashboard D/L fried my 360
Yeah, I wonder what would cause our Hardware to go bad...I really thought mine would be a HD problem, but alas, just the console. Hopefully they ship me out a new one tonight or tomorrow (if they ship Saturday).
Honestly I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardware - I think the update fucked up the BIOS or something. I'm not sure if that's something they can just wipe out and reinstall.

Wow this is bad. If it was ur powersupply it would take into effect pretty early. But with all these complaints I hope MS si on the ball getting a bios fix asap.

Edit: Maybe this download flashed your BIOS and your BIOS was already alittle buggy, and hence the system faulted. If your powersupply and HD is fine then yeah... I spoke with a friend over the phone and he thinks it was your bios, even worst if you do a bios update without downloading the entire update, or partial, you had a bigger chance of screwing up your system. I'm sure MS already did extended testing wit hthe new patch, and it was probably unavoidable if your system already had a buggy bios.

Well, mine crapped out halfway through the update as well, and now it shuts down 15 or so minutes into my Halo and Perfect Dark games.

Guys, don't buy into the hype. Just wait, and see if Microsoft has this thing working in a year or so, as there are no stellar games out now anyway...

Well, now I'm getting the 3 red lights as well...

Here's my scenario:

Prior to this problem, i have NEVER had a problem with my 360.

I downloaded the update on Thursday.
Played Cod 2 for 2+ hours with no problems on Thursday.

Friday: played PD0 and Live Arcade games for several hours, no problems.

Saturday: Sat down to play PD0, 5 minutes into the game I got a black screen and all of the lights started blinking red.
I waited about 2 or 3 minutes and powered down my system.
Powered it back up and the 2 left lights and the lower right light were all blinking red.

Called MS, should get my replacement box on Tuesday.... =(

As you can see from my scenario, the problem happened a good 5+ hours (and 2 days) after updateing my system.

I think i'm going to be okay. I downloaded the update Tuesday and have put many, many hours into it.. i'll be super pissed if I get three red lights.

Well, I guess I'm not the only one now....however, mine died RIGHT away. I could not even play a game or start nothing....just dead. I hope I get mine BACK Monday or Tuesday.

n00b question - Where do you get the update?

I have tried nearly everything.. Does it automatically update when you play a game?

Ive played CoD2, PDZ, and King Kong, Nothing as of yet.

I did download an update earlier from geometry wars, but i dont think that that was the dashboard one. When I went to my friends his dashboard was entierly different from mine.

you have to log in to xbox live. if you don't have it, you need to download the patch from xbox.com
One of the Xbox people I talked to said that one of the Live servers released a bad version of the patch and there are a few people calling in saying they never had a problem before the patch and now they have one.
That is a PR nightmare.

Was this ever confirmed?

Nah. They'll never confirm it. Honestly I was suprised the girl even told me about it. She didn't have to - I would've never known otherwise.

That's similar to me. Mine crashed a couple times immediately, but then I played it for about 2 - 3 hours after the update downloaded. Wasn't until 3 days later when I turned it on that it started crashing every time and gave me the 3 reds.

Hope you get yours fixed quickly. I should be getting my box on Monday or Tuesday.

no red lights, but after the update i started having freezing issues with king kong that i never had before...i have had two episodes where the game just froze with no controller response...had to restart the system....both instances were in the same gameplay session after about 45 minuteso playtime

Well, I got the XBOX back today but I CANNOT connect to XBOX LIVE...HELP!

Everything is confirmed under TEST XBOX LIVE CONNECTION, except XBOXLive says FAILED.

What's up with that?

Glad yours is working now - sorry to hear about the XBL problems. I hope its fixed by time I get mine back.

Still haven't got my box - they had to setup a brand new work order for me so now I shouldn't get the box until Friday. This has been such a pain in the ass. Oh well...

id recommend just calling microsoft and having them help you....request some free live time for yourself as well, since you paid for the time and you havent been able to use if for awhile....

Okay, didn't have any problems before, but last night I tried to play Halo 2....no dice. I can't play and BC games. I re-installed the latest emulator... that was no help either.

not being able to connect to Xbox live after getting a refurbed system back seems to be a widespread problem, from what i've gathered, just call them up, i THINK there's a fix for it, not sure, sorry to hear that

It's a widespread case....they are STILL working on a FIX. They are supposed to call everyone back that has this issue. I think the FIX is sending it back and getting a NEW one. We'll see.

It's not a widespread problem if it's you and one or two other people from here
having the problem. I'd say 90 or 95% of the people with a 360 have no problem.

Though if you've got some evidence to prove it's widespread, by all means, please show it.

Finally....someone said it....... ..... on the net if people hear about a couple isolated problems with a new console it suddly spreads into an OMG, the world is going to explode....all the new systems are going to burn up and eat our families......

...i mean, in anything, video game consoles, toasters, a can of soup, there will always be a few manufactures defects....that doesn't mean that every single copy of that item is bad.....

Its a widespread problem because EVERYONE who got back a repaired 360 from Microsoft over the past couple of weeks can't get on Live.

It has nothing to do with everyone else who has a 360.

Yes, it's WIDESPREAD enough for EVERYONE who got a refurb back in the past two weeks to have the SAME problem. Check out XBOX.com forums. There is a 39 page thread about it there.

I like how the other guy here thinks that since only 1 or 2 people on CAG have this problem, it's not widespread. YES, it seems to be only with refurbs sent out, but for them ALL to have the same issue is just not acceptable.

When did we start talking about refurbs getting back on Live? I thought that was another topic. I was saying the update giving people red lights is not a widespread problem.

You're right. I was talking about the update making consoles break. That's not a widespread problem.. but for every person's console that's broken and they get a refurb back that can't get to Live.. yes, that's a widespread problem.

So, again, to clarify.. update breaking 360.. not widespread. Refurbs not connecting to Live.. widespread.

I know that you're thinking "if one's caused by the other, how is one widespread and the other's not?".. because under 5% of the 360's out there got fried because of the update, but 100% of the refurb consoles cannot connect to live.

Hope I cleared up the confusion.
