The local Big Lots has two copies of a double pack featuring Civilization III and Chris Sawyer's Locomotion (Transport Tycoon-type game) for a cool $4.99. If I didn't already own CivIII, I would've picked one up myself.

Other than that, the software selection was uncharacteristically poor; the rack was instead overflowing with shitty bargain DVDs and antivirus software. When I was actively trolling Big Lots back in May/June, there were at least 15-20 games available at a time. Has anyone else noticed anything similar?
Yes, it's just a combination of few recent shipments plus casual Christmas shoppers sapping the supply of good titles.

Either that or overflowing with copies of Ant Bully! :S

I got X3 for $4. Too bad I can't use it once the Linux port is finished  (LGP should offer a cheap downloadable installer version... But I suppose they like, and need, their money too.)

Also got two dvd box sets one with 50 old mystery movies and another with 50 old sci fi movies for $13 a piece.

PcGirl, I love you. (Just don't tell my fiance.)

I've seen some of these at BigLots, but a new one for me is Scarface, and I'm seriously into knowing what kind of wacky fun I can get out of Super Granny 3. (Imagines a Super Mario Bros. type game with a grandma and cane! Powerups with prune juice. Shoots medication ammunition.)

I picked up "Harbinger", "Brigade E5 New Jagged Union", and "Scarface: The world is yours" all for $6 each. This was at the grossmont Big Lots in Lemon Grove, CA. I went around the corner to the Target and picked up Rainbow Six Vegas PC for $19.99.

They didn't have any of the others, I was looking for Area 51 also. But theres a second Big Lots thats also close to me, I might check that out.

Big Lots is incredibly unorganized where I am. The computer section was in shambles. Thankfully all the boxes were intact as I love to collect game boxes.

Thanks PcGirl! Few notable titles out of the bunch:

Scarface
Area 51
Vietcong
Voyage
Restaurant Empire (There was a 4 pack with this game for $6 @ Big Lots, get that one!)

/me wonders if Bad Day LA is worth getting for $4, just to see if it warrants the mostly zero review scores...

I'm slightly interested in Scarface, and Area 51 (after hearing Harvey Smith say how the development was so "F**cked up").

Also, it's interesting to see titles listed as new arrivals when a few of them have been on the original list for quite some time.

Appreciate your martyrdom. But can the game honestly be that bad? :)

You're thinking of the recently released Blacksite: Area 51. The Area 51 they are talking about was the one released a couple of years ago. They're two completely different games.
Appreciate your martyrdom. But can the game honestly be that bad? :)
It's possible. It's a horrible game. Quite sad too, it could have been good. That guy needs to stop putting his name on any game or he will be a hack.

Right.

Blacksite is actually the sequel; basically Area 51 Part 2.

I did, a while ago, pick up the original Area 51 for PC from Big Lots.

Meh...and I was just about to head to Big Lots to look for it. Blah.

Do you have a source for that? I didn't think they were connected.
Do you have a source for that? I didn't think they were connected.
The Area 51 series goes back to the PSOne. All were action/shooters, all published by Midway.
Do you have a source for that? I didn't think they were connected.
i don't think a source is needed. ;) most people know this is a sequel - though, i don't think either marilyn manson or david duchovny have returned.

what's the story on the ps1 area 51 games? i have never heard of them.

Okay then... I just remember hearing that it (Blacksite) was mostly unrelated to the 2005 game.

And isn't the PS1 Area 51 game the same arcade light gun rail shooter?
It's the classic arcade shooter ported to PSX.

I don't know that I'd really call the Area 51 games sequels as none of the stories (to my knowledge anyways) tie in at all. I think it's just an example of a company milking a franchise for all that it's worth :p

My big lots had a couple different games:

Mage Knight Apocalypse
Some Hack 'n slash w/ online play (can't remember the name, but definately a budget title)
Joint Ops Combined Arms (full retail version and its exp)

I used to play Joint Ops all the time, not sure if the servers are still up or what, but I think im going to reinstall it 150 person matches were crazy.

If I remember correctly the developers removed the starforce protection from Area 51 with a patch.

I just checked the boycott starforce site and it is listed a game that had its starforce protection removed:

THIS is the only Area-51 game that matters... no consoles, no sequels, no black site, just straight up alien shooting fun.

I'm offended that someone would even suggest a pseudo-classic coin-op game was born on a console! :)

Appreciate the new info! I picked up Psychonauts and Darwinia for $4 each, as well as Indigo Prophecy for $6 (not sure why, I already have it for the PS2). Used the 20% off coupon as well.

Got a question for you, PcGirl. I spotted some Hard Case Crime books at 2 Big Lots. I picked up all they had at $2 each(which was 4 different books). Would you happen to know if more are coming in? I've been interested in the series for some time and now is a really good time to pick them up should Big Lots carry more.

glad to hear you picked up some good games! sorry but i've never even heard of these hard case crime books your talking about, I only deal with software for BigLots. i'll keep my eye out for them though!

Here's a heads up for any other people that were interested in Area 51 until they found out it had Starforce. It turns out, Midway released a patch that removes Starforce protection from the game. Looks like I might pick it up after all :)
What's people opinion on City of Villans?
For $4? I'd say it's a steal. It comes with a free month, but $15 after that. I definitely think you could squeeze a month's enjoyment out of it, especially if you find you like playing with the costumes.

The downside is, if you enjoy the game enough to play the Hero side of the game, you'd have to buy that separately. I'm not sure how easy it is to get it by itself anymore since they released the Good vs. Evil bundle (hence on of the reasons CoV has hit the bargain bin). That's about $30, but I believe it also includes a free month.

Honestly, if you're interested in trying the game before splurging the $4, you can PM me your email address, and I can send you a 10 day trial. (And, that way, I get a free month if you do subscribe. :D)

Yup. We shipped them 1 Defcon in 1500 different cases. They have around 1100 stores, so yes, they will all get one piece. Some stores would receive 2 and extremely busy stores would get 3.

Ask as many questions as you like. The more activity the Big Lots Buyer sees on this thread, the more games he'll order from us!!!

PC Girl.

I live in Bradley Illinois, and looking for new games is what gets me into my local Big Lots every week :)

My local BigLots (Calexico, California) hasn't gotten any new PC games in over a year. The last good game I saw there was Silent Hill 4... which I stupidly left behind. Ugh.

I hope I find Reservoir Dogs and Defcon, at least.

Who is "we", by the way? Do you work for a software liquidator, or for Big Lots? I was always curious as to what distributor Big Lots buys from.

I was going to play it, but my cousin stopped playing and doesn't want to continue, so I would have no family/friends to play with. THey are all in WoW...bleh.
