Big Time Publisher: Wii is "a ****ing genesis"

From Get A F***ing life forums:

Pete Wanat:

Credits include: Scarface - Chronicles of Riddick - Wanted.

What we didn't know about Wii:

- Nintendo and Ubi are ONLY companies making money on Wii - Nintendo with the 1st party software and Ubi with the Petz games.
- Wii compared to 360/PS3 is like "a fucking Genesis"
- You'll probably never make your money back if you spend $500k/$600k
- Unless you spend $350k/$500k - you will not see any return on the investment.
- GUARANTEED to lose money if a development is over $2 million
- MadWorld must sell 2-3 million copies to make a profit.
- In order to port a 360/PS3 game to Wii, you will need to make a thats "less than a PS2 game".

I hate GAF, and they're exploding over this guy telling the truth. I guess it's okay for dev's / pub's to bash Sony but not Nintendo.

Heh, the guy has had more experience than any of us - so I'm sure he's just for being pissed at the Wii.

But I agree, Wii should be yelled at for alienating the hardcore.

so there goes the whole 2 gamecubes strapped together theory lol. im not surprised those kinds of games are the main ones that are profitable which further explains why all you moslty see are crap games . i still shake my head at that nerf wii game. george bush may hate black people but its obvious nintendo hates gamers.

I've also heard some rumors that the PS3 is hard to code for and that the Xbox 360 is problematic because you can't rely on having a harddrive.

Probably shouldn't browse there then.

It's hard for anyone to comment on everything he bullshits about, but considering publishers get ~$16 per unit sold, it would take a whole 125k copies sold to recoup $2 million. A large number of third party games (which does not include Petz) sold over that number in December 2008 alone.

if they can't make money creating a "simpler" game for the wii, how the hell does a developer make money on a much more advanced game for 360 or ps3?

XD

Holy crap.

Bitter fanboy confirmed in both of your sentences... P.S. You get banned there or something? That's usually why someone hates the site so much~

I know some of you hate the Wii with a mighty passion and will believe anyone who trolls the Wii , but seriously... this is nuts. Wii trolls-- most pathetic group this gen. It's just ridiculous how sad you people are... "Who needs facts? It's trolling the Wii. I approve!"

Does this mean all PS3 and 360 games need an even bigger amount of sales to even break even? According to his flawed logic, they do. :)

The majority of the "hardcore" are so whiny and fickle anyway imo.

Yes I was banned, but that's not why I hate GAF; it's the self important snottiness they show over there. They think they're god's gift to the internet, and steal 4chan and other sites ideas and label them their own.

Also if you want to know what GAF-er I was, just search for last years post season baseball thread; I was in the title.

No problem. Me asking if you were banned and you being banned wasn't a way to discredit your opinion. The other parts were though. :X

I was just curious. I've never bothered to register. I agree with the snottiness. The attitude of they're better than other sites even when they oftentimes act worse than the sites they make fun of.

Regardless, this man's statements are just childish. If the Wii was so bad, more support wouldn't currently be given to it which is what is happening now. He just gave a fallacious rant, and the people who hate the Wii just use it as a way to come out of the woodwork and circle jerk regardless of the fiction behind the majority of his comments. What a horribly immature industry this is. It really pisses me off, and I'm not associated with it directly other than buying and playing games.

Man, it still amazes me that there are Nintendo fanboys still. Even after Nintendo comes out and says that they are focusing on the casual - the fanboys still stand by them. "Psht, I don't care! I prefer casual anyways!" I don't understand it.

It amazes me that people take games and companies so personally. I laugh when people say "*insert company here* abandoned me! They turned their back on me!" It's hilariously sad.
Who cares? They're a business. It's not like they killed my or your family... They created Galaxy, Brawl, and more "core" titles in the span of two years than most of the Gamecube's life.

It amazes me that Wii trolls (not calling you one) just run with anything that is inflammatory towards the Wii no matter how stupid the argument is, constantly say the Wii has no games all the while having their heads up their butts, and have to resort to ignoring sales data. Regardless, the point is that Nintendo still makes good games. I'm particularly excited for Excitebots this April. :)

If it'll take MadWorld 2 million copies to turn a profit, just how many copies does it take for 360/PS3 games to make a profit? I'm guessing in the 5-6 million range.

Also how of many of his Wii games (if he made any) were actually advertised as heavily as MadWorld?

Also, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games = Sega making money on the Wii because it's sold like 10 million copies so far.

The GC is/was better than the Wii.
The GC is/was better than the Wii.
Okay. Cool. That is your opinion.
This pertains to the discussion how?

This same Gamecube is the one that many of the so-called "hardcore" completely ignored save for the Nintendo faithful in the first place. This was when Nintendo was making all of these "core" games. Many of these same people crying now how Nintendo doesn't make any games are the same ones who ignored Nintendo when they were actually making "core" games 90% of the time.

EDIT: Can we drop all of the "fanboy" remarks towards someone who decides to be rational and not just 100% hate a company for some really shallow and ridiculous reasons I'm not posting on GameTrailers here. :X
The GC is/was better than the Wii.
See, it's a complex mathematical formula. Goes like this.

Sega Saturn < Lobsters < Lobsters in Strell's Pants < Crabs in Lobsters' Pants < The Wii < The Wind Waker
If the Wii had Home I'd buy one.

Possibly 2 so I could play Home with myself.
So if you don't own one, how can you say a console is better than the Wii?
Not saying the Wii is, but god, how deep is your hand in the sand to listen to anyone hate on the Wii, no matter how ridiculously, to justify not owning one?

*shrugs*

I don't get some "gamers".

I always listen to other people opinions, and since I see more people than not hating one the Wii I feel that it's logical that I do too.
I'm sure he meant they're making money overall...
He said only Ubisoft and Nintendo are making money on the thing. Let us not forget Guitar Hero III and World Tour are both doing crazy numbers on Wii as well.

Phillip man, I think someone stole your joking-bone while you weren't looking.

Possibly while distracted by HOME.
If the Wii had Home I'd buy one.

Some mathologists believe that there is a way to work both Custer's Revenge and the album "Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent" into the aforementioned formula. It is believed that if they ever manage to do so, they will have found proof of the existence of a fourth member of the Holy Trinity (A being referred to by leading researchers as "The Douglas Adams Maneuver". Less leading researchers call this name "fucking retarded, guys.").

He knows the secret sauce to wii sales, ACCESSORIES INSIDE THE BOX!! Its like crackerjacks, but not as fun.

Also, NeoGAF is full of nintendo fanboys who feel "entitled" to everything under the sun because their system sells the most, but just because women buy them for the digital scale and a racing game that comes with a plastic wheel, doesnt make it a viable gaming platform, and obviously publishers around the world know this.

Nintendo fanboy entitlement is the dumbest thing of this generation, easily.

I think between your comments before and now, I should ask if there's an ignore feature. There's no excuse to read such uninformed trolling here of all places...
:applause:

So true.
So the Wii has no good games?

Do some of you just purposefully look the other way or something? Y'know, just so it justifies pathetic middle-school mindsets like "arrggghh wii sux. not any games especially the bloody and brown games to suit my mat00r mind!" and from this developer who has no knowledge of sales...
I can't believe this console wars garbage is here, too. :(

I'm leaving before we get "yeah, there's shovelware lol" which I know is coming. I just can't believe there's so many of this type of "gamer" around. Horrible.

Your not going to make money creating Wii games made for the 15+ year old male. They're playing Xbox/PS3... that said Super Mario Galaxy is easily one of the best 'hardcore' games of this generation. (And it's not selling nearly as well as New Super Mario Bros. for the DS.)

I just started playing RE5 and i'm thinking I miss the re4 wii controls. :(

Oh and you can't just replace a single button command with waggle and ship it.
Just random thoughts...it's late. :)

Oh, btw. This was a DEVELOPER. Not a publisher who was interviewed. The title's incorrect.

Sort of makes a big difference, but I doubt it matters. Wii could cure cancer and have 50 "mature" games with boobs, blood, lots of cussing and everything else preteens (and the many gamers who think like them) would love, and many haters would still make crap to troll it...

haha the wii makes use of motion controls more so then the ps3.
and the wii was the first system really to target the casual audience with a few "hard core" games here and there.

the wii raped the other systems upon release cause it looked a helluva lot cheaper then the other consoles price points...........

and the games on the wii are $10 cheaper!

and yeah that guy is nuts cause if mad world takes 2 mil to turn a profit then the ps3/360 games must take like 8 million to make a profit since it costs a lot more to make those games..

As bored as I am with Nintendo's current offerings I do have to say that the dev being interviewed in the podcast is making some broad generalizations without much to back himself up.

First he says that only Nintendo and Ubi are making a profit on Wii. So...then what about all the Resident Evil love on the system? I suppose Capcom just really loves making their fans happy. De Blob and Boom Blox sequels? Sure, THQ and EA are sinking more cash into those franchises at a loss. You know, to make the hardcore happy. Also his comment about games needing to sell 2 million copies to make a GIANT profit. He doesn't cite any specific examples of games that need that or state what qualifies as a huge profit. A bit crap IMO.

At the end of the day I like Kojima's comments about this gen the most. I remember him saying something about how a system with the graphics capabilities of a 360/PS3 and the control options of a Wii would have been the best system possible. Oh twell.

Slightly off-topic:

I wish MadWorld (and No More Heroes) were ported to the PS2.

On-topic:

The Wii sucks fat dick.

Wished the genesis had hombrew capabilities like the wii does. That's about the only thing I use if for these days.

Well you see the Wii is from the past when dollars were worth more, so when you make a game for the Wii it requires more money to make a profit than it would on the 360/PS3. So if a game on the Wii cost $1mil to develop then it's an equivalent cost to a 360/PS3 game that cost $1.5-$2mil to develop.

Believe me it all makes sense, it's in my book "The Nintendo Wii and the Breakdown of Reason."

I hate GAF, and they're exploding over this guy telling the truth. I guess it's okay for dev's / pub's to bash Sony but not Nintendo.
The problem is that he's not just bashing. He's making factually wrong statements. Anyone who pays attention to the numbers knows how ridiculous the stuff this guy saying is.

And while he does have a right to bash anything he wants, the fact that he comes across like a 12-year-old fanboy speaks volumes about his credibility and the industry in general.

I think the real story here, though, is the fact that the videogame media people sitting right next to him just lapped up his ridiculous statements and never questioned a single thing.

I'll never get why anyone has such hatred toward the Wii. It's a game console for god's sake! Then again I also don't understand the fanboy loyalty people have for consoles either. *shrugs*

A console either offers what you want or it doesn't. I had a Wii, got frustrated and complained as there wasn't anything I wanted to play on it after Mario, Metroid and Zelda came out. I sold it over a year ago and haven't looked back.

Why should I care? It just wasn't for me since my tastes have changed and I mainly play FPS and WRPGs and like HD graphics and online gaming. There are two consoles out there that offer that, why should I waste time and energy hating the Wii and trolling about it online?
Here's a question: How far does a game budget of 200k-300k or 500k-600k get you with a Wii game?
depends on if youre making a completly new game or if youre just taking a last gen game and putting motion controls in it. at least when someone does the whole xbox vs ps3 argument i can get it the xbox does have some good games on it but i cant see how anyone can defend the wii. id laugh at all the fanoboys who always defended nintendo during the gc era but i feel bad for them because for all their ranting on how the wii would be the second coming they pretty much got kick in the nuts and left to suffer.

ive like all nintendos systems up until now and ive had them all ( except the snes) up until now. the wii is basically an electronic boardgame. the majority of wiis sold are to people who bought ut to use with their friends every now and then.thats why its good to not be a system loyalist. love the games not the game consoles. if not for the fail rate of consoles i was close to getting an xbox because at the time they had the best games.

heres to hoping nintendo will make a portable gamecube( and thats not a joke).

I stopped taking Pete Wanat seriously a year or so back when GI was asking developers how they would reboot popular series... he was given Tomb Raider and set about writing this ridiculous 'you play as a naked Lara for the first stage' set-up (complete, of course, with mentioning it was because she had just gotten done having sex) that seemed utterly tongue-UN-in-cheek. Then I realized he worked on stuff like Scarface ("Do something cool? We'll reward you with balls! The balls-meter!").

It's not major stuff, but it seemed exactly the kind of guy to, uh, not really take seriously in any kind of gaming discussion.

Regardless, ridiculous statements from him all-around. General not-related thought... look, I understand not wanting a console, but I don't understand why people seem to HATE the Wii. It's like Nintendo raped people's grandmothers. Let it go, guys.

Let it go. ;)

Well he absolutely comes off as jealous of Ubi/Nintendo's making money.

He also seems bitter about not being able to directly port something to the Wii (and therefore tap into the biggest market). But look at Ghostbusters on the Wii, they invested in a new style around the same base gameplay, spending money to make money.

Maybe he should spend his time making Wanted have more than 3 enemies (hoodies! everywhere!) But hey, you can make cover useless by curving bullets and the lead character says fuck a whole lot, so who is going to notice that you're shooting the same 3 guys 500 times.

no they just raped our childhood and made us watch lol. people are pissed at nintendo because alot of us wer ehoping for really great things and instead they went and did something diff for the casual/non gamer.

i didnt like tp but i really couldnt wait to see what next gens zelda would be like same for mario metroid and i was also hoping they would bring back some of their other classic titles and dust em off and come up with something large. and what do you get? for some people its crap for others its the next coming.

i know itll never happen but i wish nintendo would let some of the other gaming companies take a crak at their flagship titles.

its a pipe dream at best but if the people who make shadow of the colossus were able to make a game based on the zelda franchise people would go ape shit crazy.

itd be cool to see the guys responsible for halo make a metroid game.

nintendo has in its posession some of gamings all time classic franchises the stuff of childhood memories and dreams and theyre , imo, not doing any more than they have to with them. its pretty that a company that took 3d gaming to new heights is happy with only doing the bare minimum but its al about money. i give em props for cornering their market but i dont like any of what theyve made now for this gen aside from the ds lite.

Explain this to me, aside from the pipe-dream of someone else getting a crack at Nintendo's properties, what exactly did you want from a new Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc?

I freely admit that I was disappointed in Twilight Princess. It just wasn't what I wanted out of a Zelda game, but it wasn't *bad* by any means. But I fail to see what exactly people wanted from a new Mario or Metroid if it *isn't* the biggest issue of the generation: graphics.

I'm not going to get dragged into this discussion, but I *strongly* feel that if the Wii had the graphics of the 360, 95% of the complaining would stop. I'm not singling you out by any means, that's just a general thought.

So, I guess in a direct response, tell me what you wanted from a new Mario or Metroid that WASN'T delivered with the Wii iterations? I'm not being sarcastic at all here, I'm genuinely asking.

no. no sarcasm imo its not what id have hoped for. and to be fully fair nintendo isnt the only game company who does lazy updates or lazy sequels theres alot of that going on with diff franchises. but when i played shadow of the colossus all i could think of was this is where zelda games should be ( as far as realistic/challenging boss fights go) i dunno if you played it yet or ever but if you havent and know someone who has it get them to let you play that one flying sand colossus fight. that was the first time in a long while a game truly blew my mind away with what it had in it. that one fight imo was better than all the boss fights in zelda tp. i wont compare them in any other way since outside of boss fights the games are pretty diff.

as gamers we all look for diff things in gaming. some people are perfectly happy with more of the same ( and no im not saying you are). i think and feel nintendo could do more but theyre playing it safe and sticking with their new demographic. i guess im one of those whiny bastards who remember what it was like to play mario and zelda on the n64 for the first time and not believeing it was real so im always gonna be a bit biased. man why cant they put zelda oot on the ds? they did with it mario 64.

I find it frustrating that this guy would say some pretty loaded statements without backing them up with examples but obviously he has a reason to say these things from a better standpoint than we do.
My opinion of the wii is, well, I bought one, don't really play it, and I won't be buying Nintendo's next console. I wish I had researched it or waited a little longer before diving in.

If the wii had decent online like the PSN and graphics like the 360, id give be a single console owner and use the wii for everything. Obviously there is still a need for good online (Live/PSN) and good graphics (ps3/360) so the wii has no chance at being the system i prefer by a long shot.
