Bionic Commando Rearmed Preview
The 2D classic has been re-imagined for XBLA. First details on what may be the coolest Arcade title yet.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, January 17, 2008 - Capcom's original Bionic Commando remains one of gaming's genuine classics. A kinetic ballet of gunning, running and gymnastic supremacy, thanks to the titular hero's Bionic Arm - all seemingly lost in the digital mists of time. So when it was announced that the franchise was to return to gaming in the shape of a brand new all-singing, all-dancing instalment on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, the hearts of a whole generation of gamers were stirred.

Now though, we can reveal first details on Capcom's previously top secret cousin, Bionic Commando Rearmed - a downloadable remake and reimagining of the original classic, set to appear on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, replete with new visuals and extra features. We spoke to Ben Judd, producer at Capcom Japan, and Simon Viklund, creative director at GRIN, the team responsible for Bionic Commando Rearmed, to get the low-down on the king of the swinger's return.

Amazingly, it's been some twenty years since the definitive versions of Bionic Commando landed in the arcade and latterly on the NES. However, affection for Nathan Spencer, the game's hero, clearly still runs high, with Bionic Commando earning itself a place at number 95 in IGN's recent 100 games of all time. Bionic Commando Rearmed looks set to take its cues from the NES version of the title, Simon Viklund noting that, "The arcade version may have been the first, but there's no doubt that the NES version is the one that deserves to be revisited." The home version of Bionic Commando refined gameplay, introducing a more flexible Bionic Arm that allowed for more acrobatic play. As Judd recalls, "The NES version is the one that is the most different from the rest, and it is also regarded by many to be the best. The NES version also had a more unified and understandable set of enemies and a memorable story line."

Ah, the storyline. The original NES iteration of Bionic Commando had, in its original Japanese guise, a cast of futuristic Nazis standing between the hero and the final boss, an 8-bit effigy of Adolf Hitler. For its Western localization, more explicit references to the Third Reich were removed, with the Nazis referred to as Badds, and Hitler acquiring the nom de guerre of Master D.

Bloody big bosses will require to use all Spencer's new moves.
It's these latter cast of rogues that's set to make a return: "Since Bionic Commando Rearmed is an homage to the original, it will closely follow the story of the original," says Judd, "Imperials? Yes. Master D. Ohhh yes. However, now that we don't have the same memory limitations that the 8-bit game did, we have fleshed out the story quite a bit. Without altering the original story, we have added some new background information that helps tie Bionic Commando Rearmed to its next-gen big brother." As you can see in our trailer below, the remake also retains some of the more eccentric elements of its forefather - the immortal line "Get the heck out of here you nerd!" is present in all its absurdist glory.

When Bionic Commando was originally released in 1988, it vied for the loose change of arcade-goers amidst a cacophony of other side-scrolling action titles. To stand out from the opposition, Capcom needed to come up with something unique and up their bionic sleeves they had the perfect answer – the Bionic Arm. Enabling players to latch onto platforms and bound across the screen, the Bionic Arm allowed a freestyle approach to tackling levels. It was a refreshing gameplay addition and, just as Half-Life 2's gravity gun helped elevate it above first-person rivals, so Bionic Commando's Bionic Arm ensured a fresh and exciting experience.

This game is going to be the SHIT!!! I loved BC for the NES and have even played, and loved it, recently. This will be one PSN title that's getting my green day ONE!
I smell a cheap cash-in! Look! It's another remake!
QFR!

I can't wait to play this. Remote play makes this instawin!

This is a game i def can not wait to play. Its not just a straight up port. They re did the graphics. Better then any updated classics so far.

Hopefully it is as good as it seems it should be.
I'm cerious to when it is coming out. I read something about feb, and tomorrow is last day so I guess that is wrong... lol
I believe the devs said on GameSpot at GDC that it will be out in May. It never had a release date, just "before the next-gen Bionic Commando is released."

So anytime between now and ???

Speaking of capcom remakes...is that HD Remix version of Street Fighter II even coming out now, especially with SFIV on the horizon which by most accounts plays very similarly to SFII? I'm looking forward to Bionic Commando for sure though.

Winter '08 is last I saw, but that was a long time ago. Does SFIV have online play too? If not, that could be one big difference in the games.

I like the Capcom remakes (MM:powered Up/HunterX) so this should be something I'd like too.

Highly doubtful. If you saw the trailer, it looks really good, and almost as if Capcom ISN'T screwing over PS3 fans (unlike just about every other move this generation). In fact, becuase of the XBLA limit, the best version will be on PS3. :)

hey guys i'm a little confused as to when this game is coming out and if it's going to be sold as retail copy or over the net.

i understand bionic commando rearmed is coming out for ps3, but i see it availble for 360 already...is that right?

also i guess people are waiting for the 3D version and that is called just Bionic Commando....right?

really confused here guys. any info would be awesome!

Bionic Commando : Rearmed is the updated 2d version that will hit PSN and Xbox Live sometime in May for $10. Not retail.

The Next Gen Bionic Commando which will be fully 3d etc will hit sometime fall/later this year.

ok so the one i saw on 360 marketplace is a video and i just misunderstood that item?

also will bionic commando fully 3d, will that be psn also?

Has this been delayed? I noticed this strange wording on Capcom's post on the PlayStation Blog and it's making me wonder what's up since this was supposed to be out this month:

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, a chaotic destroy-everything-in-site arcade shooter, should hit the store in early June. 1942: Joint Strike, the follow up to the 194X series, arrives in July, followed by Bionic Commando Rearmed, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and a pirate themed RTS called Plunder!

I played the demo, had fun, so I purchased the full game. :D

Although, I feel stupid because I deleted the demo, thinking I'd have to re-download the full game. :whistle2:(

Only a handful of PSN games have had the "unlock full game" feature (that awful Rocketmen game comes to mind, and maybe a few others), so it's more of an appropriate habitual response.

I just bought this, too - but I dug the 1942 demo so much I'm tempted to get that as well.
Ugh. I stink. I couldn't even figure out how to harm the first boss.
lmAO! grab the barrel and throw that crap against his weak spot. Then shoot the crap out of him.

Just played the first level, it's a fun game. The hacking thing had me confused for a minute, and the boss was fun, took a bit to figure out how to get up a level.

aw man sum of these challenge stages are brutal... and I've only played thru the 2nd challenge room!!!

33 tries, 3% success rate... crazy.

Does anyone have problems seeing the walls and celings in the challenge rooms? maybe it's my LCD but I find it hard to see with the black & red sometimes so I can't tell sometime where theres somthing in the way

They look fine to me. These rooms are ridiculous. I'm having trouble with the normal stages, as well. Man, I used to be good at this game when I was a kid. Now I'm terrible.

I got this yesterday halfway accidently. I had it in my shopping cart and clicked "buy it now" thinking there would be another prompt ala Amazon. There was not. That being said, I loved the demo and the source material so I'm not upset. I couldn't imagine trying to play this with a 360 controller.
