Bionic Commando: Rearmed
 more like a 2d successor is what everyone here wants.
you mean Elite Forces??
These trophies better be retroactive, Super Hard was just that, SUPER HARD.

Plus all my work in those trials...

:(
:(

They're not retroactive.
I played through this remake a few weeks back, and....eh, it's okay. I think the original is still better in a lot of ways, but it was an okay way to spend time.

I wish someone someday would do a real Bionic Commando sequel. The GBC one was weak, this remake is weak, and by all accounts the new "big" one is even more iffy (although I still want to try it some time).
BCR is weak? :whistle2:( Personally I think future remakes should use it as the model. I wish the recent Gunstar Heroes rerelease had gotten the BCR treatment, for example.

If it were up to me, Grin would be put on probation as a result of the next-gen BC and devote themselves to doing remakes of old titles from now on.

Finally downloaded Rearmed once I heard the trophy news, might have been a mistake cause the game icon song snippet gets stuck in my head every time I exit to the XMB. Already knew the songs were great but never expected the remixes to be this great. I need to buy myself the soundtrack...

>_< i still think it's a bit sad people held out this long since it's such a great game :(

it also has the best damn OST i've heard in a while, which I am also sad people don't get to hear when they hold off playing

Yes, I feel great shame and disgrace for not having bought it till now. It was difficult deciding whether I wanted both Bionic Commando games for the PS3 or 360 though, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

this is one of the best remakes ive seen in a while.just imagine if they did this with another classic game like castlevannia 3 or ducktales? stil havent beat it yet though but its a fine game to jump into if youre bored. the music is awesome too

now I really felt bad... I started the thread and I still haven't bought the game... I'll get it one of these days!

dumb question: I haven't tried but I guess I will if no one answers but, do I have to start a new game to have access to the trophies as most games with tropie support have been. Or can I do the burnout save file trick. Never got that far into the game so it really doesn't matter.....just wondering.

I didn't like the music either. MUCH worse than the original IMO.

It's not a terrible remake, and it's quite possible it's the best thing Grin's ever done, but it still doesn't do justice to the original. I think I would have been happier had it not been called a remake.

Just some of my problems: Much of the gameplay was changed, and IMO always for the worst. The lite RPG element's gone, the weapons were changed, typically made lamer, the weapon strategy was gone. The art, while solid, isn't cutting edge for today (and why not 2D?) whereas the original was. Ditto for the music, which just sounds lke someone creating a lame remix of the original. Conrol wasn't half as tight either (and I played the Playstation one that probably controls better).

Some examples of great remakes:
-Resident Evil-Phenomenal graphic update (IMO bigger than what they did NES->Playstation 3, even though it was only jumping one generation instead of FOUR), lengthened gameplay, totally new puzzles that were just as good as the original...but had the side effect of leaving it worthwhile to still play the original.

-Final Fantasy 1 and 2 (Playstation Portable)-Graphics and music are in every respect evocative of the originals, but vastly superior-not easy to pull off. The gameplay was greatly streamlined, and while I think there's some merit to some of the original decisions, overall it plays great. The next games on the DS with their nasty low-tech "looks worse than the originals" 3D art and slow load times were not the way to go.

-Metroid: Zero Mission-not 100% sure I like this better, but it adds new content, much better graphics, and it's still much more faithful than BC: Rearmed is (AND includes the full, original game!) It, like Resident Evil, doesn't replace the original, but is still well worth playing.

-Tomb Raider: Anniversary

-Super Mario Bros. 3 (Gameboy Advance)-not entirely successful due to the different screen shape/size, but the graphics are nicely upgraded without looking like something different, and save capability is very welcome.

Umm...I'm sure there are more too. But to me, this attempt was no more successful than NST's GBC Bionic Commando sequel around the turn of the century. They created something that resembled it but it just didn't play right, and just wasn't as fun, even if it was a fairly good game if not judged next to the original.

I guess I should be thankful they left in the bionic arm at least! After Atlus replacing the fighting mechanic in Y's Book 1 and 2 with a generic "every other action RPG ever made does it this same way" mechanism, I suppose I should be thankful even for that.

Still...21 years later, and no one can update it?

(And after Wanted, Terminator, and Bionic Commando/Rearmed, is Grin in trouble? I mean they seem like nice guys, but they seem vastly over hyped too.)

I loved this remake and I loved the music!

The Challenge rooms were also hella fun.

As for no weapon strategy, really? Aside from Bazooka mania which is fairly toned down with a rate of fire and splash damage, you do have to switch between weapons to suit the environment and enemies.

Controls were great. If the controls were clunky or w/e I wouldn't have been able to do what I did in the Challenge Rooms ;) (PS3 Version)

As a modern remake, I welcome the change of removing the "level up" element and replacing it with acquiring items to boost your endurance.

Don't forget, they also retained the exploding head at the end ;)

I just want to add that I think BCR has some of Shinkiro's greatest work. His art always had sort of an uncanny valley thing going but somehow it fits perfectly with the game's tone. I loved macho-looking Spencer arguing with the robot boss.

Wow, almost exactly a year after Rearmed came out, Grin is closed. It's too bad about all their other games getting poor reception because BCR is still one of my favorite remakes ever. If only they had just stuck to amazing retro remakes like this guy suggested!

I hope the BCR team goes on to something good. Simon Viklund, while you're looking for a new gig you can come crash at my place and we'll play Audiosurf.

I've been wondering if this would happen. I mean they released 3 very questionable games in a row (can't even think what the third one besides Wanted and Bionic Commando was). Their stuff didn't seem terrible, but wasn't worth the hype it was getting...at least from the Wanted demo (and geez I'd love a great game based on that, after just finishing the movie!) :)

Like I've said, I think Rearmed is massively overrated too. I know a ton of people love it, and I do think it's an "okay" remake, in that it's playable, and you can have fun playing it, but I think it's worse than the original in nearly every way, making it a near-pointless remake, perhaps along the lines of the Gamecube Metal Gear Solid...rather than something like Resident Evil on the Gamecube. For $5 it wasn't bad though, but next time I play Bionic Commando, it'll almost certainly be the original.

Just fired this up for the first time in a while, and was prompted for an update. Apparently they made the game easier?? I continued the same saved game but I seem to have infinite lives now.

I'm not even sure what difficulty I was on... I think it was "Normal." So did they just make Normal mode... "normaller"?

Pre-patch (on Normal) I kept dieing at the Albatross' jungle-gym of flippers (before 'The Leader' boss battle), but post-patch the game skipped that section.

that game was damn hard i havent played it in a while but id say that rearmed was harder than the 3d bionic commando sequel.

I'm fairly pissed that the PC-exclusive challenge rooms that they advertised on the official BC site (which was meant to ease the sting from the bizarre $5 price hike on PC) never happened.

I don't think I'll be buying any more Capcom digital download games on PC. Flock, BCR, Age of Booty...they've all had some major problem or another.
